Re:Albertans have rejected referendum on independence on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @09:40AM (#50166278)
So, you realized what's going on... why doesn't that filter down to the general population?
Re:Albertans have rejected referendum on independence on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @09:27AM (#50166079)
Wow, I didn't realize until now how sparsely populated Alberta is. Only 5 million people in a huge area and a little over 1m voters in this referendum. And some of them are worried about immigration?! Myanmar is a similar area and has 10 times as many people as Alberta.
how is that partisan politics? showing up as a mascot for a random human interest story is the primary function of a mayor.
Re:Maybe There Was an Egg Cartel After All on Monday October 19, 2026 @03:23PM (#50156801)
Unregulated markets always trend toward monopoly.

in the absence of regulation, people will do fraud. you need regulation.

If someone thinks that a human mind operates like a computer, they might think that humans are interchangeable with computers, and then decide that we are better off without humans.
About 70-75% of Americans live in single family homes. Your experience is not universal.
I hope we never do prove that, because as soon as that happens it will be used for eugenics.
tell that to the c-suite!
Hmm, that's poor API design. If the big companies can't standardize their inputs and responses, then the small projects aren't going to either. Sounds like there are lots of small issues like this that will roadblock AI-powered automation for some time.
well yeah, it works for those incumbent giants. but the whole point of a "moat" is that it makes it more difficult for everyone else to enter.
do you really want AI to make life and death decisions? do you really want that power concentrated in the hands of the few who own the AI systems?
Re:The value of not getting to the point (2015) on Thursday October 08, 2026 @04:20PM (#50011585)
what do you prefer to talk about?
Re:Yes, and on Thursday October 08, 2026 @04:16PM (#50011520)
Well, it's sad that the professor's advice for how to get a job today is "networking", same as it always was. I feel bad for those who don't have family or friends who work in the industry.
Does any company besides OpenAI get to misreport $20b in revenue and still get taken seriously?
Re:Sharing AI progress in mathematics on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @05:33PM (#49999086)
In a sane world this power would not be allowed in the hands of private corporations.
Re:The Mathocalypse on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @05:29PM (#49999030)
It's on OpenAI and Anthropic to prove that they obtained these results legitimately and credited all researchers who deserve credit. They do not get the benefit of the doubt.
Re:The Mathocalypse on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @05:26PM (#49999003)
How do we know that these "internal models" are not just half computer and half a giant team of mathematicians? How do we know that OpenAI actually came up with these solutions and didn't steal them from outside researchers?
But then we have to as well ={
How do you get that through to someone who doesn't even understand that mass surveillance and profiling is a problem? Or to young people who have only lived in a society of mass surveillance?
What's stopping someone from paying to influence AI results?
Re:Why the Bronze Age Collapsed on Thursday October 01, 2026 @03:14PM (#49925872)
Well they were a people, who came from somewhere! Are you really saying that these battles didn't happen?
Re:Why the Bronze Age Collapsed on Thursday October 01, 2026 @10:29AM (#49922172)
But I bet he would rant about immigrants who don't affect him at all.

Okay then, who did the Egyptians fight during the Battle of the Delta during the reign of Ramesses III?

The US has materially supported terrorist groups in the Middle East and South America.

Um, I take after my mother, Gigachad, so yes it does have to be a huge production. Just yesterday I finished the leftovers from a party a week ago.

I know what you mean, but the real issue for most people is time, money, and social connections. Dinner parties were way down before TikTok. Most people I know cannot host at all, either they live with their parents or their apartment is in such rough shape that it would take days of cleaning to be able to invite people over.

Re:You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @02:56PM (#49898568)
I'm confused because it sounds like you're describing social anxiety, but then saying it's not social anxiety. I have social anxiety so I can't really imagine why somebody would act like that if they didn't.
brexit proved that the UK would rather stab itself than show accord with anyone
Re:You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @08:04AM (#49891758)
That doesn't explain the declines before that. It requires a lot of domestic skills and time to host a good party.
Or they don't have options and have to put up with it.
