Re:An Intuitive Explanation of Black–Scholes on Saturday October 05, 2024 @05:00PM (#41752860)
LTCM wasn't really an options selling fund though selling equity options did become a big trade for them

Also they were more of advisors in the fund then anything else

Safer bet would be to hold short term treasures.

With a 10% edge you really don't need to be very good

And in fact if these guys were good they wouldn't be banning people at all

Actually in reality these so called professionals will diagnose you almost immediately
Or maybe they don't need an abstraction and just think they do because it's easier than the alternative.
Having had a few interactions with the Indonesian government, the Netherlands should have just kept them.

If you're truly underpaid for your experience and location then you should be able to get a new higher paying job easily. And if you can't easily get one well maybe you aren't underpaid.

All quants know pandas. beyond that their technical skills are often quite limited.

It makes sense to invest resources into something everyone knows how to use, even if it's suboptimal.

Yeah and Finish devs also make a small fraction of what's possible in America
Re:Common Lisp Community Survey 2024 Results on Friday August 09, 2024 @10:48PM (#41206957)
In my experience, it's just not that good? I programmed professionally in Lisp (Racket to be specific) for a couple years and while I was initially enthusiastic about it, my enthusiasm for it diminished over time.

The heavy line noise in service of an easy to understand macro system just isn't worth it (moreover, a lot of languages have advanced macros these days without S-expressions).

Looking back, I think I was so into Lisp because I just wanted to feel superior and better than the dirty Java or Python programmers?

Re:Ask HN: Who's been hired through Hacker News? on Wednesday July 10, 2024 @11:32PM (#40933446)
got contacted by a trading firm when one of the founders saw one of my Show HN posts. Was my breakthrough into the quant / hft industry and I now run my own trading firm: that one event massively changed the trajectory of my entire life.
So who would sell it to you then? At any given time there's not very many actual natural buyer and sellers for a single security.
