save and invest most of my paychecks; and when robots replace most of our IT jobs, move to some of the lowest cost per acre for land counties, to raise chickens and goats.
would be most gracious from them to open-source it. It would completely removes the bad aftertaste from those who trusted the product and the company.
- first copy on external 2Tb drive, via Time Machine ( macosx )
- second copy on 12Tb Raid5 NAS, via rsync
- code and settings also on cloud ( gitlab )
- documents also on cloud ( GDrive )
- media burned on DVD.
just surrender... agree with them and collect your paychecks. Later you will collect more paychecks fixing the slop.
actual engineering, i guess... before ai-assisted coding, it was like the civil engineer laying the bricks himself.
mostly GLM-5-turbo for coding,
and gemini-3.6-flash for brainstorming problems
( why ? token cost and availability at work )

i "love" my vices and luxuries that my paycheck provides...
( and i hate the little time my job allows me to enjoy those )
but what sort of people keep their bitcoins on the exchange ? the whole point is about not being seizable by dirty governments...
Programming Perl, 1st Ed. from Larry Wall.
The three great virtues of a programmer were enlightening for a fresh-outta-college beginner.
same here. GLM-5.3-flash is my current daily runner for coding and reviews, and Deepseek-v4 when a second opinion seems beneficial.
you should take this job as what every job is: means to a comfortable living. Take the paychecks, if the backlog of weeks take months and the c-levels are used to it, it only means more paychecks for you.... save/invest as much as you can, and spend the rest with whatever gives you pleasure, this alone should prevent your health deteriorating.... maybe even "stop worrying and love the bomb".
How did the AI/agentic-engineering/LLMs changed your engineering and operations ( maybe product management ) teams and activities over these last 2 years ?
How did it affected your cost structure ?
for what purpose ?
i would prefer FreeBSD for a laptop/desktop/workstation, but openbsd for a lean/mean server...
GLM 5.x coding plan from z.ai, and opencode go plan.
looks a lot like a rag pull...
0. SWE turned manager against my better judgment
1. MacBookPro M4 base model.
2. roughly 10 years ( my last one was a MCP retina 2015, and before that linux notebooks lasting about the same time ).
replace documentation for an agent/chatbot accessing a RAG with the collection of requirements/design docs plus the code repository.
I have been doing a POC at my day job and it works surprisingly well even with SLMs ( Gemma3 4B, i smy current favourite )
wezterm running herdr.dev with several pi.dev sessions.
i am assuming he is suggesting a 3 year depreciation cycle for the equipment, quite common on enterprises.
"former software developer" does not say much... which field of expertise, which tech stack are you comfortable with ?
In current AI trends coding means very little compared to system design, solution architecture and (argh!) prompt/context engineering... any proven experience there ? a public portfolio ?
and i am sorry, but it does not seem feasible you can afford pets currently...
towards system design and solution architecture.
for my needs, raycast suffices, and it is one less app to install.
homebrew ( indispensable ! all the other apps below are installed/managed via homebrew ):
- raycast ( keyboard shortcuts for clipboard manager, basic window management, pomodoro tracking and app launch )
- stats
- ice ( menubar manager )
- theBoringNotch ( to have some use for the annoying notch )
- mole ( storage cleaner )
- wezterm ( inside which i run zsh, tmux, neovim, zoxide, eza, batcat, ripgrep, fzf, fdfind, yazi, btop, lazygit, lazydocker... )
- textmate
- iina
- zen browser ( with uBlock origin and betterfox settings )
