There is a subtle (perhaps unintentional) sleight of hand here.
60% of all new restaurants close on the first year. That is very different than half of *all restaurants, even those that have been open for decades, closing in a single year.

Re:Boulder prohibits gatherings of any size for 18-22 year olds
on Thursday September 24, 2020 @09:30PM (#24585678)
You have no scientific evidence that these students not wearing surgical masks or cloth face coverings has anything to do with covid spread. We have decades, nay a century, of science showing that face covering requirements do not slow the spread of a pandemic. There will absolutely be lawsuits over the rash, panicked, capricious, arbitrary actions of authorities during this crisis.

So the solution is to lock the kids alone in their dorms? What a nightmare. Forbidding human contact with anyone is the most extreme covid restriction I've ever heard of. A clear violation of human rights.

How many excess deaths are not okay? 1? 10? The right strategy is to grin and bear it like our ancestors did. We'll have a vaccine soon enough. Or not. Either way, welcome to Planet Earth. Most of us Earthlings would prefer to live rather than hide.

Something like 0.2% of NYC residents have passed away from the virus. As of 2018 the MTA had 50k employees. 60 out of 50,000 is 0.12%.

This take is too pessimistic. Eventually we will have enough data to project what could have happened without treatments like this. We will know the rate of infection, the rate of death without treatment, etc. There will be many different groups globally trying to find out these answers and apply them to preventing future pandemics.

For the benefit of the rest of us, can you explain what issues this causes and where/how you are running this code?
Re:Plink-plonk.js – hear webpages render with DOM observer and audio API
on Saturday February 15, 2020 @02:48PM (#22337492)
Please give a concrete example of this pain that you have actually experienced. I understand that ASI (automatic semi-colon insertion) is in theory ambiguous because you are relying on the compiler, or in some cases many different compilers, to execute the statement correctly. In practice, for over a decade, I have never run into such an issue. I suspect it's due to engineers trying to get too cute with their implementations.
Re:Plink-plonk.js – hear webpages render with DOM observer and audio API

A bash one-liner solves this problem for you. If you think it's "cool" to execute JS as a bookmarklet you are free to distribute your own version of the library. The original commenter was the one "putting people down" by demanding the author do it "the right way".
Re:Plink-plonk.js – hear webpages render with DOM observer and audio API

Imagine still using semi-colons in JS source in 2020 and "bookmarklet compatibility" being your reasoning.

You're beating around the bush. If you agree that hegemonic states engaging in imperialism isn't "special", why are you so resistant to the idea that China will behave that way once it has the opportunity? If you ask those in Tibet and Xinjiang they would argue that they already are.
Re:US says it can prove Huawei has backdoor access to mobile-phone net...
on Wednesday February 12, 2020 @06:20PM (#22313861)
China plays a much longer game than the US. But sure, let's say next decade then. Your analogy is poor. I'm describing the behavior of all hegemonic empires in history. You seem to think the US is a special case. Why is that?

Let's check back in a few decades and see if this still holds true. I suspect the current disparity is due the US holding the title of unchecked global super power for the past century while China is still getting up to speed. What happens when Belt & Road initiatives start to be expropriated by radical populist governments in the 2040's?
