I love this! This is the kind of interesting stuff I thought I'd be working on before I became a software developer and got disappointed by the day to day CRUD, JS framework nonsense, Agile cesspool it turned into.

I didn't find the right alignment of text to be easier to read, but though it was a mistake on your part. Of course, now I know it was intentional. Good job though.
Re:Britain being forced to go cashless 'against its will' on Thursday March 31, 2022 @05:46AM (#30865418)
I quit carrying a wallet several years ago and have never looked back. I just carry my driver's license, debit/credit card, and any cash I have in a pocket. It works well for me.
Re:Namecheap: Russia Service Termination on Monday February 28, 2022 @08:33PM (#30508020)
This feels kind of shallow. Much like the BLM support thing, where they would attach a slogan to their website. "Let's get some social points" is what this amounts to.

I think businesses need to stay out of politics and social issues. You're, in effect, punishing people who have nothing to do with what the Russian government chose to do.

I agree. The risk of war is too great.
Exactly. This situation was highly thought out and I'm sure he has at least one ace up his sleeve. Most likely in the form of controling natural resources to europe.

If China really wants Taiwan then now's the time to do it. North Korea might as well take South Korea while all this is going on. Now I'm starting to think the world is descending into chaos. Or has it always been that way?
Yeah, me too. Mainly D&D character generators.
Re:State of JavaScript 2021 on Wednesday February 16, 2022 @06:42AM (#30358771)
I think I might try Golang, I would love to just code again. I'll look into Svelte as well.
Absolutely true. I only have weird smells sometimes, while my wife still suffers loss of appetite and a reduction of energy levels. It's been 6 months since we recovered.
Re:The Story of Maxis Software (1999) on Monday January 31, 2022 @10:28AM (#30148981)
Do you have to personally attack Brendan Eich?
Re:The Story of Maxis Software (1999) on Monday January 31, 2022 @10:26AM (#30148942)
I agree. Personal activism is obviously what it was and it's sad that we can't say as mutch without being down-voted.

It would be much better if the gay people defending this would do so for the right reasons and not simply because they are 'rooting for the team.'

Re:Myths about cooking steak that need to go away (2013) on Sunday January 23, 2022 @05:01AM (#30044975)
I'm going to try this one night when I'm on my last 2 beers. Might just time out perfect!

You sir, are my hero. I keep telling myself when I retire I'll have time for such things. I think I'm kidding myself...
Re:Do success stories cause false beliefs about success? on Sunday January 16, 2022 @07:07AM (#29955309)
Many guitar gods use drugs, Walt Disney and Bill Gates did not stay in school, and people like Mike Tyson and Kevin Mitnick were successful after comitting crimes.

There's just too many variables in life that make success more about luck than following general guidelines.

Yes, if they deserve to be in prison and aren't.
Re:I think I know why you can't hire engineers right now on Thursday January 13, 2022 @06:45AM (#29919645)
Exactly. And many of us have a hard time getting a single opportunity and feel lucky when we get a job.
Re:I took a job at Amazon, only to leave after 10 months on Thursday January 06, 2022 @10:58AM (#29825182)
Leetcode is more about learning pattern recognition of the problem category than it is critical thinking.

What started off as "write a binary search" has turned into a massive gate-keeping process to try to select candidates who fit a profile. I'm not sure what that profile is, but I know I don't fit it. I grinded Leetcode for 2 months and failed Google, Facebook, and Amazon. I thought there was some luck involved and decided not to put any more time into it. But, I don't fault others who do.

I do think the large pay increases the candidate pool, so there has to be some form of testing. I just don't think as a senior developer, it assesses my skills.

What's an example of a 'simple python question that someone failed?' And was it something that truly showed incompetance?

In my experience, it turns out to be some dark corner of the language, or a keyword that's not in common use today. Examples are: 'void' in JavaScript and 'boxing' in C#
