Re:Open Letter to Tim Cook, Sabotaging Web Apps Is Indefensible on Tuesday February 27, 2024 @04:21PM (#39530153)
That's their public core argument.

Their real argument (to shareholders etc) is that they want that 30% rake on everything you buy, so they want you to have 900 apps on your phone instead of a web browser than visits 900 websites.

Re:iMessage with PQ3 Cryptographic Protocol on Wednesday February 21, 2024 @05:00PM (#39460228)
Signal UX is AWFUL if you have a work PC, a home PC, a phone, and a tablet.

Getting messages to flow across all of them is impossible.

Re:AI behavior guardrails should be public on Wednesday February 21, 2024 @04:42PM (#39459982)
"AI behavior guardrails" is a weird way to spell "AI censorship"
Re:Photos from the SpaceX Debris Field on Thursday April 27, 2023 @04:48PM (#35734353)
We're one killer global war / pandemic / etc away from extinction

Being on multiple planets (and eventually multiple solar systems) prevents a species from going extinct if something catastrophic happens to their home world

Re:Microsoft Edge is leaking the sites you visit to Bing on Tuesday April 25, 2023 @03:10PM (#35705186)
In case anyone was wondering how, it's pretty straight forward:

Hamburger Menu > Settings

Privacy & Security tab on the left

Scroll down to the Firefox Data Collection and Use section (2nd section from bottom)

Uncheck all of the boxes in this section

Re:Brave – copy clean link feature on Thursday March 09, 2023 @04:01PM (#35086652)
In the default lists, under privacy, just subscribe to "AdGuard URL Tracking Protection" and it'll do the same thing for you
Apple isn't actually doing anything for privacy, they just say they are. Testing proves otherwise time and time again https://gizmodo.com/apple-iphone-analytics-privacy-4th-lawsu...
lol imagine being a "journalist" in the current year and writing "Rather than match iOS's tracking limits, Google built an additional tracking system." as if you think iOS tracking does anything close to what it says it's going to do ( ex https://gizmodo.com/apple-iphone-analytics-privacy-4th-lawsu... ).

This is a hit peace written by an iZealot who doesn't even address Apple's system shortcomings.

Throughout history, 109 countries / localities have expelled Jews. The most common reason is that they were intentionally destabilizing their country and/or governments. These are historical facts and aren't debatable.
Re:What is .NET, and why should you choose it? on Tuesday February 14, 2023 @12:56PM (#34793173)
.NET developers look on .NET Framework with disdain now. Good luck hiring if you're still on Framework.
lol, you can't tell iPhone zealots that their antiquated mocks are out of date. They're still using the same old stuff because they can't handle the fact that iPhone hasn't added a new feature that wasn't present on Android first in 5+ years.
You don't. It's widely discredited for comparing platforms. They also cherry picked JUST single core performance here (which has 0 bearing in any real life usage scenario).

Don't take it from me, take it from Linus Torvalds (you know, the guy who created Linux) - https://www.realworldtech.com/forum/?threadid=136526&curpost...

Do they really hate labor or do they hate lazy millennial labor?

I'm sure this will be downloaded to hell, but you have to ask yourself that.

Re:Google Invests Almost $400M in ChatGPT Rival Anthropic on Sunday February 05, 2023 @11:52AM (#34666405)
I guess by "in bed" here you mean "they're already buying office 365 to get legit Word, Excel, Outlook licenses"?
Re:Google Invests Almost $400M in ChatGPT Rival Anthropic on Sunday February 05, 2023 @11:49AM (#34666387)
Is it as politically biased as ChatGPT?
Wow, their pricing is super high. I can't imagine who the target demographic for this is when google maps / etc are free.

Re:Self-hosting in 2023: Nextcloud on Linode, or _?_ on _?_? on Tuesday January 24, 2023 @03:45PM (#34510060)
Whenever you consider going self-host, consider what REDUNDANCY and DOWNTIME are worth to you.

Sure you can use an old computer and host at home much cheaper than AWS / Azure / etc. But on AWS / Azure / etc if the physical machine your VM is running on dies, your VM moves to another physical box within seconds without you having to do anything, within seconds, and without data loss. What is that WORTH to you?

That said, you can get a Synology NAS (easy) or build your own NAS (harder) and run Nextcloud in Docker. In the event of hardware failure (it will happen, it's just a matter of when), you'd just have to bring that Docker container + backing storage back up on the replacement gear.

They're intentionally making Safari a bad experience so that you have to use apps for everything. Apps where they can rake 30% on your purchases, of course.
Chrome and Safari have nothing like Firefox containers. I can't imagine switching to Chrome or Safari.

BitWarden - The least shitty password manager!
Re:Netflix's New Chapter on Monday January 23, 2023 @02:32PM (#34493752)
I've talked with several of my friends about this. EVERYONE was universally willing to pay Netflix their monthly sub when all the studios just sold their content to Netflix.

NO ONE has subscribed to all of Disney+, Apple+, Paramount+, Peacock, etc. in the new everyone-built-their-own-netflix era.

They're all either making do with less content or sailing the high seas mateys yo ho. In many cases they've even DROPPED Netflix.

I don't see how the current over a dozen streaming media provider status quo stands for much longer. Some (many?) are going to have to fail before everyone gets pissed off and goes elsewhere for their entertainment.

Re:ReactOS on Wednesday January 18, 2023 @09:24AM (#34426911)
This is why HN post subject of just the project name are confusing. Is there something new here we should be excited about in the project?
Re:Sickcodes/Docker-OS X: Run macOS VM in a Docker on Tuesday January 17, 2023 @07:11PM (#34421401)
Apple's insane hardware pricing
Re:PHP in 2023 on Tuesday January 17, 2023 @10:15AM (#34413364)
PHP devs hate to admit that the only reason PHP is still relevant at all today is because of WordPress.

If WordPress moved to a modern language tomorrow, PHP would cease to exist afterwards.

Re:The Triumph of Safari on Saturday January 14, 2023 @01:46AM (#34377892)
You should check out containers for Firefox. It does the same thing without having to open multiple windows / instances.
Re:The Triumph of Safari on Saturday January 14, 2023 @01:45AM (#34377890)
Safari is the new IE6. It's always going to be the weakest / furthest behind major browser.
Re:Alpine Linux in the Browser on Friday January 13, 2023 @02:26PM (#34372633)
This tech appears to have not changed since 2019 - https://bellard.org/tinyemu/

Why is it noteworthy / in the new page here?

Re:WordPress is 20 years old on Tuesday January 10, 2023 @08:42PM (#34334003)

How does it compare to Alpine Linux in size?
