Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @09:32AM (#50303632)
That's one hell of a stress test. I'm betting the aftermath is the community doubling down on how well the entire system withstood the attack as designed.
Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @03:29AM (#50285561)
Is there a word that explicitly captures the fear and stress induced by hitting "save" on a stack overflow question you've spent 30 minutes formatting and triple checking to ensure that it won't get thrown out by mods?
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Thursday October 29, 2026 @03:21AM (#50285509)
This is how you know the reality distortion field is very real.

Remember "gorilla arm"? Icky fingerprints? Toaster ovens?

Good times.

Re:How is music possible on Friday October 23, 2026 @03:22PM (#50214069)
I like to wonder if there are alien civilizations out there with no music or art.
Re:`123456' password used in Danish CPR data breach on Saturday October 10, 2026 @10:15AM (#50033245)
We really missed a trick by not normalising the term passphrase.
Eventually the party will be over but for now it should be a no brainer first choice tool for some 90% of dev tasks
Re:Mistral Large 4 on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @09:47AM (#49978437)
We're probably fast approaching the scenario where the cheapest models will win out.
Re:How do Traffic Signals Work (2019) on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @04:21AM (#49798093)
Here's a surprising anecdote I've discovered living in South Africa wrt traffic lights.

When they're not working at a busy intersection in my area, the intersection effectively becomes a four way stop. And I've found that as long as everybody follows the rules, traffic actually seems to flow FASTER than when the traffic lights are actually operable.

I've timed this a few times.

Precisely what has effectively killed off the "building in public" trend that was all the rage just a two years ago.
Re:Over 5,200 Ebola cases recorded in Congo on Monday August 24, 2026 @03:46AM (#49416425)
Very lazy headline. Which "Congo"?
Re:DeepSeek Harness on Friday August 14, 2026 @05:47AM (#49296579)
Played around with it.

Does what it says on the tin. Great work.

Re:Almost no skill required to cook a steak on Friday August 07, 2026 @03:29AM (#49207031)
Chefs kiss would be this post having been written using AI.
We're living in the golden age of the grifter
Re:U.S. kids no longer reading for pleasure on Friday June 12, 2026 @04:09AM (#48501281)
My son (8 years old) is a bit of a unicorn in that he lives his devices and his books pretty much equally.

On any given day we're either telling him to put away his switch or his book because that's how engrossed he gets.

Re:What is it like to be a bat? (1974) [pdf] on Thursday June 11, 2026 @04:39AM (#48487840)
So I've always thought what if each of our individual consciousnesses is like a radio frequency that is unique to each individual? This would explain why we regain consciousness when we wake up, because our physiology is locked to whatever that frequency happens to be.

Under this model, 'you' don't actually reside inside your skull. Instead, your brain is just biological hardware translating a non-local broadcast, meaning our core identity exists independently of the body.

That unique frequency "fingerprint" is close enough in pattern to every other human being that we're able to "understand" each other a process that might manifests in interesting but complex ways eg love and empathy

Bats might be a whole frequency band up!

Re:Where to buy a non-Apple, non-Google smartphone on Saturday May 16, 2026 @07:43AM (#48159283)
Many years later and I'm still bitter that the tech press laughed Windows Phone out of the room straight to its demise. Yes it had very little developer support but at some point things were looking up. It was just the butt of too many jokes from influential people.

A third ecosystem right now would have been amazing

Re:Pinocchio is weirder than you remembered on Friday May 08, 2026 @06:40AM (#48061240)
I was way too young when I read this book. Absolutely devoured it and had nightmares for a long time.
He could write the same exact post but swap the word "Mac" for "Windows" and the comment section here would be markedly different.
Battery and solar panel advancements have been the most interesting story in tech for going on a decade in my opinion.

Wish I could fast forward 50 years and see what the world will look like.

Re:Cloudflare Email Service on Thursday April 16, 2026 @10:53AM (#47793992)
Yep, and I'm both a Cloudflare and Resend customer.

I like Resend, a lot, but this is probably something I can't pass up, especially if it does what it says on the tin

Re:Artemis II crew take 'spectacular' image of Earth on Saturday April 04, 2026 @06:21PM (#47644128)
It's humbling to see this image. I can't even begin to imagine what it must feel like to see this from the perspective of those astronauts.
Because Windows works just fine for me.

I'm a dev, I don't game. No issues.

Why people find this hard to believe is kind of puzzling to be honest. As if everyone's experience simply HAS to match your own.

That's actually pretty cool. What made you think of doing this in the first place?
As long as they keep using Macs, iPhones and Apple watches.

That'll show those pesky Americans.

Re: on Tuesday March 03, 2026 @03:36AM (#47229791)
Really disappointing. A lot of us have always considered Ars Technica to be the last of a dying breed of ultra serious, no-nonsense professionalism.

Obviously, we were rocked by the DrPizza scandal years ago...and now this.

Sobering.

Hasn't wild volatility always proved to be the very nature of Bitcoin?
The irony of building 'sovereign' software on top of Windows and MacOS.

Without a hardware or OS pivot, this feels less like independence and more like empty posturing.

Apple have enough customer behaviour data at hand to fully understand that there is very little they can't get away with.

So why not maximize profit?

Re:Show HN: Ez FFmpeg – Video editing in plain English on Sunday December 28, 2025 @11:25AM (#46412184)
Still think AI shines here. I find ffmpeg commands pretty arcane. Nowadays I just ask an LLM to generate the commands I need, test, and I'm done.
Re:Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues on Tuesday November 18, 2025 @08:12AM (#45965279)
Bluesky still chugging along.

Just saying.
