05 September 2023: Hacker News Front Page
I doubt there's been a webpage that was slashdotted in 1999 and then became front page news of other website more than 20 years later.
You do need to sell yourself well, great technical and communication skills but possible.
Additionally, there's an additional consideration: Will they hire you as a contractor or employee? Contractor would open these rates. Employee hires is easier to get you caged to LATAM rates, why? Because they would hire you with a LATAM subsidiary and they incur additional costs that may be transparent for you. Not all companies have the expertise and appetite to have a LATAM subsidiary or a third party doing this for them. The same with contracting, some companies will have the appetite of doing certain type of arrangements.
It would be really rare they hire you as an "employee" for US based company as you would need US work authorization plus you would be "simulating" that you live in the US.
The downside of contracting is that you need to understand the local laws such as taxes, are there differences in tax rates if you were employeed by a local company vs contractor, foreign income requirements, etc of where you are living and what would be the most beneficial way for the US company you are contracting to hire you. Incorporating a LLC in US or in other jurisdiction is not always the default to go so you need to do this research yourself.
By the way, central america is too general to make specific recommendations.

Honestly I can tell you that for technology comparing different latin american countries is quite apples and oranges. The countries might seen similar but they are really not.
As an extra thought, maybe it became viral by sharing over Whatsapp, so I am pretty sure seeing referrals if you didn't make a campaign it will be pretty hard to pinpoint.
