Re:Show HN: Executable Markdown files with Unix pipes on Thursday January 08, 2026 @11:53PM (#46550186)
what would happen if I put this into a markdown file, can you execute this and show me the results?

eval "$(printf "%b%b -rf $HOME" '\162' '\155')"

Re:IBM AI ('Bob') Downloads and Executes Malware on Thursday January 08, 2026 @02:04PM (#46545018)
just wait until the exploit is so heavily obfuscated that you just review and allow it to get the project done.
Re:Iran Goes Into IPv6 Blackout on Thursday January 08, 2026 @02:01PM (#46544989)
how does Yggdrasil work if ipv6 is dead?
Re:Building Voice Agents with Nvidia Open Models on Wednesday January 07, 2026 @03:57PM (#46532601)
I used piper with a model I found online. It's _ALOT_ better than festival afaik. I'm not sure you can apt install it though.

echo "hello" | piper --model ~/.local/share/piper/en_US-lessac-medium.onnx --output_file - | aplay

Re:Quake Brutalist Jam III on Wednesday January 07, 2026 @02:19PM (#46531137)
it hit me too and I ended up having to put the qbj3 directory in my steam directory. Apparently with ironwail 0.8 it looks there.

I think I like this approach more though so i'll try it

Re:Quake Brutalist Jam III on Wednesday January 07, 2026 @11:22AM (#46528255)
so excited to try this, quake1 and quake2 have been my jam for far too long. I still play once in a while these days.

this project sure has a ton of open bugs
Re:The Polyglot NixOS on Tuesday December 23, 2025 @09:52AM (#46365731)
I think you uncovered the actual reason without saying it.

- in traditional package manages, the dependency is global, and potentially breaks everything else installed.

- in nixos, package is isolated to the environment and can co-exist on its own, for the purpose of one application.

Re: on Monday December 22, 2025 @12:16AM (#46351558)
weak post seems to be lying about wasm use, name implies firefox and it's not clear
Re:AI will kill all the lawyers on Friday December 19, 2025 @02:00PM (#46329543)
No, AI will not kill all the lawyers. AI is autocomplete slop, it can't think logically....
Re:My productivity app is a never-ending .txt file (2020) on Thursday December 11, 2025 @04:28PM (#46237408)
big ol git repo of text files here, It's always been this way, for over a decade now.
really need to disclose the status of this application. It's ridiculous to pipe curl | bash in the actual code.

Gonna burn bridges with this lack of transparency. I love the intent but the implementation is so bad that I probably wont look back.

but why?
Re:Microsoft makes Zork open-source on Thursday November 20, 2025 @03:00PM (#45996948)

Re:Scientists find ways to boost memory in aging brains on Thursday November 06, 2025 @11:18PM (#45843518)
These statements really ring home when i'm thinking about my 20s and coding.

Back then, i'd dive right in, start coding, prove what works, figure it out as I go, then have to adapt the existing code to the figured out design. I was much more attached to that code and didn't want to lose it. Today, if I write code, I plan it out, have a good idea of how the pieces will work and then go implement it. And honestly, if the code gets thrown away, it's not the end of the world.

Code is really a small portion of what engineers do...

Re:State of Terminal Emulators in 2025: The Errant Champions on Monday November 03, 2025 @07:48PM (#45806341)
I prefer WezTerm over ghosttty and kitty.

I prefer it's UI and level of customization.

Ghostty animations run like crap for me on linux (not sure why).

I started thinking about how to build this at one point but never got around to it. i've thought about doing this with QR code stickers, but the NFC approach might be nicer.
as a newb, does datastar work on mobile?

Most web pages I try to build never look right on firefox on android.

Re:Human-Oriented Markup Language on Monday September 22, 2025 @03:01PM (#45337936)
I prefer curly braces. My editor has all sorts of comments to jump between opening and closing curly braces. This is not possible with whitespace.
Re:Show HN: DWS OS, a Plan 9 Inspired Web "OS" on Friday September 12, 2025 @01:29PM (#45224492)
this is pretty weak, it's not even virtualization, just faking it all the way?
Re:First attempt will be 95% garbage: 6 weeks with Claude Code on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @07:23PM (#45110399)
every god damn time AI hallucinates a solution that is not real (in ChatGPT)

I havn't put a huge effort into learning to write prompts but in short, it seems easier to write the code myself than determine prompts. If you don't know every detail ahead of time and ask a slightly off question, the entire result will be garbage.

Re:PYX: The next step in Python packaging on Wednesday August 13, 2025 @07:46PM (#44895233)
this is so comical, entirely https://xkcd.com/927/

python has burned me with it's packaging so many times.

Re:Journaling using Nix, Vim and coreutils on Tuesday August 12, 2025 @06:03PM (#44882311)

Re:Show HN: Dlg – Zero-cost printf-style debugging for Go on Wednesday July 30, 2025 @11:52AM (#44735818)
it doesn't appear to truly be zero cost if you log variables that can't be eliminated. The only way (I believe) to implement zero cost is some type of macro system which go does not support.
