Sounds like this guy is trying to plug his new book using sensationalism.

This episode is widely known:

Stigler's law of eponymy is also relevant:

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one getting into esotericism :)

Could it be the results of Terror management theory due to the pandemic? Who knows, but this website is awesome:

These are also essential :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_of_Gilgamesh https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/En%C5%ABma_Eli%C5%A1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_the_Dead

Critical theory and the midwits that promote it are back in style.
Did not know that male's were the only employees that "schmooze". You learn something everyday.
Don't be so sure :)

Quantum computing is improving everyday, and new methods of defeating RSA are being researched:

True, but the packets in-flight can take different routes. If you have a machine on the switch, you know you've captured all the packets that were in-flight. This make it easier to break the encrypted packets.

It's a choice--everything in security is a risk-management assessment, but I'm surprised rsync.net was able to get so many security certifications with this setup.

Dumb switches will blast packets to all interfaces that are connected. If there's a machine on the switch that's in promiscuous mode, it can see all the packets on the local network (including the backups coming in from customers).

Managed switches typically have ACL support. I get the KISS principle, but this setup seems to be trading security for simplicity.

Don't know if running a dumb switch connected to your ISP is the best infosec policy:

Debian GNU/kFreeBSD does the reverse. In my opinion, where Linux outshines FreeBSD is in hardware support.
WeWork has always seemed like a Ponzi scheme to me. This reinforces my theory.

Re:FPGA Design for Software Engineers on Wednesday October 16, 2019 @08:22PM (#21277670)
I've been looking for something like this for a while. It's hard to break into FPGA design coming from a Software Engineering viewpoint, but I think it teaches how the machine REALLY works and can produce better Software developers.

Legal! Vou começar a usar o Debian.
Re:Ask HN: How to cope with burnout every 6 months? on Monday October 07, 2019 @07:56PM (#21187277)
I'm in a similar situation, but I've been working from home the past 3 years and I'm starting to think I should go back to working in an office.

Like myself, you're depressed--probably because you have a High IQ and can't stand being around other people.

Checkout out this book--a lot of people have called it a diatribe against society, but it's helped me relate to the world: https://www.amazon.com/Curse-High-IQ-Aaron-Clarey/dp/1522813...

Not the first place I think of when planning a vacation. Would be nice to visit Saudi Aramco.

"The Spinner* sends you an innocent looking link. This link is sent to the target via text message. When the target presses the link, a cookie connected to the link attaches itself to the target’s phone."

Is this legal? I never click on links sent via SMS.

I can't believe I haven't seen this before!
What I wish wasn't taught is Calculus. I suspect many people are drawn away from Computer Science because of all the Math that's required. In my opinion, people can comprehend Discrete Mathematics without having to pass four or five advanced courses beforehand.
Re:A Developer Goes to a DevOps Conference on Friday September 13, 2019 @07:30PM (#20967741)
This is spot on--I especially liked "DevOps means the veteran admins had to check in their personal scripts, and everyone is expected to automate more things."
Re:What computer science concepts stretched your mind? on Thursday September 12, 2019 @07:39PM (#20957648)
For me it was virtual memory and having a sparse memory layout. I remember thinking, htf did they come up with that?!?

Certbot is awesome! It really gives you no excuse not to provide https on your website.
Re:Ask HN: Anyone Hiring Based on Open Source Code Review? on Thursday August 29, 2019 @01:48PM (#20831882)
In my opinion, it's infantile bro culture hazing and feelings of inferiority. Oh, you can't traverse a binary tree using Breadth-first search in aarch64 assembler? You obviously aren't qualified to work on our web application.
Re:Ask HN: Anyone Hiring Based on Open Source Code Review? on Thursday August 29, 2019 @01:24PM (#20831643)
Coding interviews have gotten out of control. Most of the people giving the coding interview couldn't pass it themselves. Even worse, the people who can pass these tests only do so by memorization--once they are hired, many are not competent Software developers.
500k salary at Facebook? Sometimes I feel like the only person at a large tech company not making half a million a year.
