Re:Xiaomi MiMo Reasoning Model on Wednesday April 30, 2025 @09:28AM (#43844943)
Xiaomi in Chinese translates to "Little Rice"

Here is the meaning of the name

Described here: https://finance.sina.cn/tech/2020-11-26/detail-iiznctke33979...

在后来的讨论中,我突然想到了我最喜欢的一句话——“佛观一粒米,大如须弥山”。

Translated into English, it means:

“In the later discussions, I suddenly thought of one of my favorite sayings — ‘A Buddha sees a single grain of rice as vast as Mount Sumeru.’”

This expression emphasizes the idea that even something seemingly small (like a grain of rice) can hold immense significance or value when viewed from a different perspective.

Thanks to chatgpt for translating this

Not defending google but I don't believe that Google is sending the passwords anywhere

This is how 1password does it for their watchtower feature (basiclaly same feature as your google example)

https://support.1password.com/watchtower-privacy/

The way it works is that instead of sending your password to their server to check (which they do not do that). They download known a list of leaked password to local to check.

Re:Atlassian to buy Loom for nearly $1B on Thursday October 12, 2023 @04:25PM (#37862737)
I don't think you can just say that bout the last raise.

Depends on the exercise price. Exercise price is lower than the preferred price that the investor paid. Due to the fact that investors get preferred shares.

409a can often be 20% of the preferred valuation.

I don’t believe 1 infers 2.

2 is useful information and additive to conversation

1 is just juvenile and belongs to Reddit not hacker news

Re:Gitpod shipped GitHub a launch cake for Codespaces on Friday September 03, 2021 @05:35PM (#28409692)
I recently started using hosted codespaces (because I bought a apple M1 and ran into a lot of issues with compilation)

I started with gitpod and then moved to GitHub codespaces after 1 weeks.

GitHub codespaces is just miles better in terms of features AND first class integration AND reliability (I gave up on gitpod after 2 consecutive nights of not being able to connect into my pod).

While I hope gitpod all the best and want them to do super well. It is hard for me to imagine going back

Do we know what happened to the other 59 children?
Can apple appeal in this case to a higher court not in Texas? (As I understand, a lot parent cases are brought to one small district in Texas)

And secondly can apple stop doing business in east Texas all together so that Rodney gilstrap no longer has jurisdiction?

As a quick tangent, has anyone tried watching movies in VR?

If you haven’t, try it. I have been watching stuff in my oculus quest 2 and it is pretty darn awesome. I think this is the future, most definitely.

Oculus quest 2 still is not perfect. But I cannot imagine going to the theater with a few more generations of VR. (Oculus quest 5 maybe???)

It is in the article "Mr. Thiel purchased his founders’ shares in PayPal through his Roth IRA during PayPal’s formation"

I am willing the venture a guess that the initial valuation was far greater than 0.001 per share. And this was all an accounting trick to exploit IRA

I don't think that's true right. Peter Thiel purchased shares in Paypal at $0.001 per share, which is far below fair market value.

The "theft" here is the undervaluation of the shares with which he purchased at

I mean cryptocurrency is indeed what made ransomware possible.
audible - the audio book app also does not allow purchases in-app.

Fanhouse can just let purchases happen on web

Why didn't Microsoft go after this? it seems like an incredibly powerful community that blends really well with linkedin AND github
We can also just cut off crypto which kills random payment
It is insane to me that in a region with such intense housing shortage, we are simultaneously so against building up

As a landlord, I would definitely not rent to this program though. I mean, would you?

But yes looking at this, the program cost is indeed insanely high

I assume this was missing a /s

Re:“They introduce kernel bugs on purpose” on Thursday April 22, 2021 @12:24AM (#26898717)
Let me play devil's advocate here though. This is absolutely necessary and shows the process in the kernel is vulnerable.

Sure, this is "just" a university research project this time. And sure, this is done in bad taste.

But there are legitimately malicious national actors (well, including the US govt and the various 3 letter agencies) that absolutely do this. And the national actors are likely even far more sophisticated than a couple of PhD students. They have the time, resources and energy to do this over a very long period of time.

I think on the whole, this is very net positive in that it reveals the vulnerability of open source kernel development. Despite, how shitty it feels.

Re:AMA: Ivan Kutskir, creator of Photopea on Sunday April 11, 2021 @06:30AM (#26769226)
While I don't disagree with you (and want to start there).

I just think photopea is far more than "generalists who aren't necessarily good at the deep stuff".

I think Photopea is pretty complicated alogrithm wise too

Re:Supreme Court sides with developers in Google vs. Oracle on Thursday April 08, 2021 @11:46AM (#26740218)
This!

The hardest thing for competing chip manufacturers to overcome in the deep learning world with is the CUDA APIs / CuDNN API etc.

I used internal stackoverflow at Uber. Honestly, not super great. (even though it is great on paper)

the search function is bad and I end up using it a lot less. (and often can find better answers on slack)

I think to make SO useful, you need a push from the leadership layer to have all the questions be posted on SO and answered on SO. If you don't push for more questions to be answered on SO, then slack is often better source of Q&A.

And you probably need to maintain and trim the answers (since internal APIs / issues change a lot more rapidly and some answers can become stale quickly)

Basically, not a slam dunk straight away but I can imagine that it is a good idea

As sad as this is, this seems to be true. I am thinking hard about what reddit has introduced. Cannot come up with anything.

I do like their mobile app though

Re:Airbnb’s Stunning IPO on Friday December 11, 2020 @10:45AM (#25386979)
I agreed with everything until Netflix. Netflix is incredibly complex.

But yes, we can all agree that these take a lot of people to run

Re:Airbnb’s Stunning IPO on Friday December 11, 2020 @10:44AM (#25386966)
This comes up a lot (ohh it is a just a crud app and you just need a couple of people)

This is fine and it is common misconception about how large app businesses work. (kudos to airbnb for making complex things look so simple)

Here is a great post about Uber and why Uber gets complex (once you have many product lines across hundreds of cities, each with their own subtleties and rules/regulations) https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25376346

Re:U.S. Judge Halts TikTok Ban on Tuesday December 08, 2020 @01:42PM (#25349578)
Irony is that I see a ton of pro-trump content on TikTok (much more than YouTube, where the YouTube filter bubble mostly prevents me from seeing them)
