News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Switzerland, through EPFL, ETH Zurich, and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, has released a complete pipeline with all training data - that is "fully open", to my understanding.

See https://www.swiss-ai.org/apertus for details.

https://ethz.ch/en/news-and-events/eth-news/news/2025/07/a-l... was the press release.

Everything is a compromise.

A while ago, I wanted a new notebook:

I looked very hard at a 16" M1 Pro with 64 GB of RAM, at approximately USD 4000, tiniest storage possible. I really really wanted to run this with Asahi Linux.

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 7610 with 16" display (and known design touchpad design defects), 3K resolution, sort of light-weight, Tiger Lake 11800H CPU, Intel + Nvidia hybrid graphics, now running at 64 GB of DDR4 RAM, 2 TB of very fast PCIe 4 SSD, 1 TB of PCIe 3 SSD.

Professionally I run this with Windows 11 Professional + VMware Workstation -> Fedora 38 because of an Azure VPN; in my private life this is plain Fedora 38 dual-booted.

Why? USD 1700. Less than half the cost.

Native podman / docker. CUDA. The (still) dominant architecture (x86). I am typing on Proper Keyboards anyway.

Re:KeePassXC Audit Report on Saturday April 15, 2023 @12:33PM (#35582136)
I use cloud storage to save my .kdbx file(s).

On Linux and Windows, KeepassXC is my software of choice. On Android, I like (and have donated multiple times to) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=keepass2androi...

With the cloud storage setup (which, in my case, happens to be Google Drive), I always have the most recent version of my password safe(s) where I need them to be.

With this, my major threat exposure comprises of * the cloud provider losing my data, letting an aggressor get hold of my (encrypted) password store(s) - and then the aggressor brute-forcing * I myself losing my password store data to an aggressor * I myself losing my password store credentials to an aggressor

I am explicitly not using any of the online password providers simply because they are by themselves a much too valuable target. I myself, hopefully, am not valuable (or visible) enough, and therefore am not subject to "at-scale" attack patterns.

uBlock Origin is what makes the Internet usable.

I am saddened that I do not know how to best express my gratitude towards gorhill, and the filter list maintainers, for their incredibly valuable, tireless work, so "Thank you, so, so much!" will have to do here.

It's only thanks to uBlock Origin, I believe, that my parents (of rather old age) are able to make positive use of the Internet. A world without uBlock Origin would see them drowning in an onslaught of noise, attacks, flashing attention-grabbing spam, none of which improves the quality of their lives.

So, thank you, thank very very much, gorhill, and the filter list maintainers!
