Re:The SEC Should Block Anthropic's IPO to Protect the Public on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:55PM (#50346997)
Why not? The government is allowed to destroy private enterprise as much as the government is allowed to destroy society. Just because you personally disagree with it doesn't mean society doesn't have the right to destroy companies they find to be damaging to society.

Destruction isn't the opposite of bail out, it's just destruction. The government is obligated to do what society wants. From this destruction would come creation by freeing up capital to do more productive things than waste money chasing fantasy rather than providing free school lunches or free university instead (you know the actual things that would generate economic value).

It's really weird, as if there aren't already open source solutions already they can contribute to they'd rather slop of the ecosystem some more.
Re:Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power on Sunday November 01, 2026 @02:06PM (#50328628)
George Washington routinely abused the office of the presidency and ignored provisions of the fugitive slave act where he compelled members of the Treasury Department to kidnap a free African woman, Ona Judge, in New Hampshire multiple times (failing each time).

I don't think hero worship is acceptable in any form. We shouldn't be elevating individuals above us but championing how capable any of us could be if the time comes.

Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Sunday November 01, 2026 @02:04PM (#50328596)
hmm I'm now curious if you saw the second season of The Rehearsal on HBO. The second season why about pilots and in particular how copilots can be disempowered to speak up when things go wrong. It sounds serious, and it is at times, but also a comedy.
I don't think people care about press freedom when they are struggling to pay rent, buy food, get healthcare, or try to better themselves through education.
Re:Digital Minimalism on Saturday October 31, 2026 @04:08PM (#50319630)
I notice you don't mention much about physical social interactions.

How do you meet new people and engage with your community if you don't have a phone or aren't using to use the corporate media apps? Is in person enough to get you by? Generally curious because not having a cellphone seems really hard or maybe that's just a misplaced anxiety on my part

To throw a few Meta executives in The Hague for a decade or two.

Not aware of the concerns you have, but they seem just as valid about other similar concerns across industries.

Any books you'd recommend or journalists to follow that cover this beat?

Unlike India tho, China isn't burdened by American Imperialism and suffering from extreme economic poverty.
Yeah and they won the election based on it. This is why it's extremely important to not just say what people want to hear but actually do it too.
Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @12:16PM (#50291454)
No, the solution is to force tech companies to pay a VAT that can then be used for public benefit software projects.
Re:DoorDash to Acquire Instacart on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:48AM (#50290007)
It's a standard practice in suppressing democratic norms yes. The US has a long sordid history of the elites absolutely hating when commoners practice democratic beliefs.

Let's not forget that many of our "founding fathers" deeply hated democracy and when speaking of the "democracy problem" of the 1780s in America it was mostly referring to commoners in Massachusetts participating in civic duties.

This tradition has never went away and is still practiced today.

Only got a dishwasher 4 years ago, my entire life I've been doing dishes by hand. I believe it. Someone elsewhere in this thread that mentioned a study on how rinse aids can cause health issues:

Wonder how many other every day chemicals we interacted with have long time side effects that we're slowing finding out about.

Downvoted but absolutely correct. This is what happens when you neglect working people's needs, they will always side with the authoritarian that promises a better future. Neoliberals need to be purged from the DNC if they ever want actual power like the New Deal Coalition held onto (controlled both Houses of Congress for 60 years, won 10/12 Presidential elections with their candidates too).

Nixon literally won his election by promising national price controls. The people love economic relief, even just the promise is enough to win elections.

Didn't Okta had several major hacking incidents over the last decade as well?
You don't think users, paid users at that, shouldn't have a say in product development? Good lord no wonder the public distrusts the tech community so much.
Advertising and marketing tech increases the bloat, I agree. I too think it's insane that Meta has 20,000 engineers for their entire product suite but when you develop for a malware featureset the bloat comes with it.

What do you think of the idea of workplace democracy?
Re:Hex Raises $100M on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @05:31PM (#50281189)
It's the generic tech landing boiler plate page with a very poor color palette. Outside of the colors it's looks very non offense.

What's the issue?

Re:Big Tech's thirst for water is sparking a global resistance on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @05:28PM (#50281149)
Why should society let market forces decide how we treat a resource necessary for human life? I would rather trust a democratic society more than I'd ever trust any of these anti-humans that currently lead big tech. These people have shown the open disdain they have towards humanity, we are under no obligation to give them whatever they want if they just pay for it. Money is not the issue for them, they do not like being told no.

Society should, and is, openly reject such disdain and contempt toward humanity.

Re:Big Tech's thirst for water is sparking a global resistance on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @05:24PM (#50281110)
What is the issue here? Local populations don't want to use their communities to satiate the greed of a multi trillion dollar corporation.

They can afford to pay whatever the rates, they just want the public to give them more corporate welfare so they can get greedier while inflicting a surveillance state upon the masses.

Re:Big Tech's thirst for water is sparking a global resistance on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @05:22PM (#50281083)
No, it's not a review it is an excerpt taken from the book. If you scroll down the site has a bunch of excerpts from other authors about other subjects too.
Nothing you stated here is against what I am proposing: legalized state sanctioned lawfare against extremely undemocratic and anti-human organizations.

We are absolutely not cutting our noses off, what a dishonest reply. These engineers already broke the societal pact and they openly display deeply anti-human beliefs. Society does not agree with these beliefs and society should reflect this by having the full force of the government going after these companies that vast majorities of the public hate.

FWIW every single state has their own version of the CFAA laws. Some of which are drastically easier to litigate against these devs too as the services being impacted have users in every state.

America is a backwards country where unless something is explicitly illegal, apparently it's totally okay to engage in said thing.
Of course precedent has been set, the government is able to litigate civil infractions into full blown felonies if they decide to.

You're thinking of something unrelated.

We can totally take these civil crimes and turn them into a variety of felonies, with any luck we could put some software devs in federal prison too. Maybe after a few dozen of them get locked away for 10 years our profession might take ethics seriously.

No, we should absolutely use it to attack these anti-human technologists. The precedent has been set and we can fight back against these extremely anti-democratic death cults using the tried and true method of state sanctioned lawfare.
Because it's not about helping you, it's about control. These people are literal anti-humanists, they just want to control all aspects of society. If people are suffering from the consequences of a massive publicly mandated surveillance state, well that's the price of progress if you listen to the anti-humanists.
Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:44AM (#50261034)
That was only true for a small period of time in America:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Compression

Outside of that small 20ish year window, workers have never benefitted from increased productivity compared to the capitalists that have stolen $50 trillion from the masses:

https://time.com/5888024/50-trillion-income-inequality-ameri...

No because money is a deeply undemocratic human invention that allows evil people to continue to persist in spite of it.

Let's not act like oligarch's don't have a massive influence in society as a single person.

More billionaires that are hellbent on destroying society will be shortly created.
