Really is heartbreaking that the click wheel is such an incredible and satisfying user interface but technology has evolved such that we have no need for it anymore.
Re:My personal AI agent posted my bank details on company Slack on Saturday October 10, 2026 @12:00PM (#50034209)
So he gave an AI agent read access to all his personal financials and then gave read/write access to his company messaging app. WHAT DID YOU THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN?
Re:How An AI math breakthrough ignited a controversy on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @08:13AM (#49625237)
Trust me bro that's how things went down
Re:How An AI math breakthrough ignited a controversy on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @08:05AM (#49625155)
That would be an incorrect interpretation

If anything I'm diminishing the importance of calculus and pi by comparing it to this bullshit
Re:How An AI math breakthrough ignited a controversy on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @07:39AM (#49624817)
Its called an analogy
Re:How An AI math breakthrough ignited a controversy on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @07:37AM (#49624782)
"Breakthrough" to me would be like Isaac Newton inventing calculus to calculate pi. This feels more like $12MM in tokens was spent to add another digit to pi using the old way.
Re:Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf] on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @12:02PM (#49612266)
Given the history of OpenAI and current litigations, I would say they've developed a bit of a reputation for not respecting intellectual property. I'm dubious they have some unbreakable moral code that would prevent them from viewing and using user data.
Re:Fine, I'll build my own text editor on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @09:25AM (#49535867)
Kind of a bummer that 95% of software engineering is dedicated to creating a padded cell to make sure no one makes a whoopsie instead of doing creative and interesting things.
Yeah thanks for the advice
Yeah this was a great conversation, thanks for all the positive contributions.
Re:Seven books I keep close because I love them on Friday August 14, 2026 @01:39PM (#49302036)
His book Higher-Order Perl was really good and introduced me to some interesting programming concepts, but it also helped me realize why no one uses Perl anymore
Re:My Rules for Using Spreadsheets on Thursday August 13, 2026 @09:58AM (#49286091)
Reviewing the individual formulas in an excel report is psychotic. Normally what I would do when checking someone elses work for errors is spot check a couple of the values in a column and calculate them by hand to see if they matched up. Either that or just implement the step myself in excel and see if I got the same output.

That's a lot like reviewing someone's regular expression. Like I'm not going to read through a 100 character regex to see if it matches semantic versions, I'm just gonna pull it up on a regular expression tester and see if it does what it should.

Fascism is good when I do it because my opponents deserve it :3
Perhaps they shouldn't
Oh ok you want the government to create an extrajudicial process to punish political opponents. Sounds kinda like Facism.
Why don't they have work visas?
Re:Space mirrors could ruin astronomy — and your eyes on Monday August 10, 2026 @12:27PM (#49245906)
4 times brighter than the moon doesn’t sound very dangerous.
Re:The Silicon Valley Founder Meat Grinder on Saturday August 01, 2026 @08:39PM (#49139987)
Sounds a lot like a rich kid pretending they're not a rich kid.

Drugs are bad, mmkay
Data centers in space sounds really stupid until you consider how hard it is to get a data center built on Earth.
Re:Prefer Strict Tables in SQLite on Saturday July 11, 2026 @04:41PM (#48875648)
I really hate this trend of turning every piece of software into this kafkaesque monstrosity that demands you jump through 100 hurdles to do the simplest thing. I mean yeah its good for LLMs but as a human it gets kind of annoying. I honestly love that if you hand SQLite garbage it will do its best.
That doesn't appear to be stopping the current administration. That's why I think you should be more concerned about the tools of oppression existing rather than the laws that govern them.
These tech-bro public resignations are so tedious. Ostensibly he seems fine with the existence of AI mass surveillance and AI powered murderbots but he just never envisioned a scenario where they would get used that wasn't congruent with his politics.
Re:The last Romans are still around on Friday June 26, 2026 @10:00AM (#48686747)
God punished the Romans by turning them into Italians
Re:Google Hits 50% IPv6 on Sunday June 21, 2026 @01:37PM (#48620866)
I think the addresses are a big issue. The address space is just stupid big, I don't understand why we need to prepare for every grain of sand on Earth having a WiFi chip in it.

Most people can pick up calculating subnets in their head in ipv4 pretty quickly and ipv4 addresses are easy to memorize on accident. My brain turns to mush as soon as I start seeing hexadecimal characters in addresses.

40 bits would've bought us a lot of time and would've kicked the can down the road several decades. People from the future would be much better equipped to design a new protocol because they understand their needs better.
