I remember voting to fund high speed rail, and the funding was quite generous...

If I saw that in any other context I would have assumed it was a low budget special effect--mostly due the spray of rainbow sparkles when the module separates from the base.

Re:LibreLingo – FOSS Alternative to Duolingo on Tuesday April 29, 2025 @11:40AM (#43834148)
If I could change one thing about Duolingo, it would be to allow the user to turn off all the gamification completely. I don't care about fake internet gems, knowing how to speak Chinese (or whatever) is it's own reward, so stop wasting my time with bs!

Nevertheless, Duolingo is an amazing and convenient starting point for unlocking the learning of new languages.

Make your way through the entire course as fast as you can, while also listening to music, talking to people, talking to chatGPT, reading books, etc in the target language as soon as you can manage.

Protip: learn your 3rd language using your second as the language of instruction.

@dang the article does not seem to imply that molecular oxygen was found. maybe retitle to "Oxygen element" or "Atomic oxygen"?

Re:In Defense of Y'All on Thursday December 19, 2024 @11:37AM (#42463129)
Thou and Thee are nominative and objective cases. Same for You and Ye.

The formality/informality distinction is between You/Ye and Thou/Thee.

Plural 2nd person used to formally address a single individual came to English from French, thanks to the Norman Conquest.

French, I think, inherited it from Latin, and the custom of addressing the emperor with the plural.

After a while it became rude to address people with the informal 2nd person singular.

By the time of the King James Bible, iirc, English had already switched to universal "you", and "thou" was brought back in order to indicate where the source text had used a singular versus a plural.

"What is thy bidding, my master" is therefore foreshadowing of later insubordination.

Re:California bans legacy admissions at private universities on Tuesday October 01, 2024 @12:27PM (#41710609)
Tautologically, each student at a university who is a blood relative of a graduate of said university has a social network that shares a node with the university's formal network.

"Social capital" is a term of art in sociology meaning "the network of relationships within a particular society", in this case a university. Robert Putnam has written extensively about the empirical benefits of high social capital, which include efficient allocation of resources, lower stress, and prosocial behavior.

A newly admitted student whose social network shares 0 nodes with the university's formal network makes no initial contribution to the university's social connectedness within the universe of people formally affiliated with the university. Whereas the legacy student is already socially connected at the moment of admission.

Also, the presence of multigenerational participants in an institution help it to develop unique traditions and culture that improve it in ways that are hard to articulate and measure, which I will artlessly describe as the opposite of the feeling you get from going to the DMV to renew your driver's license.

Re:Is the internet killing the nude beach? on Thursday September 01, 2022 @12:42AM (#32672094)
IANAEuropean. But, it has been observed that in Europe men of Middle Eastern extraction have subjected European women to sexual assault and harassment at much higher rates than men of a local background, causing women to feel unsafe in contexts that previously did not feel unsafe. The implicit claim, I think, was that this is the cause of the decline of nude beaches.

I have no knowledge of this being the case, although I do stand by the fact that a disparity in rates of sexual abuse by men of different ethnic groups exists.

This is, of course, the sort of topic that is unlikely to be discussed honestly without the protection of anonymity, and even then many people, particularly women, have ideological beliefs that deny or excuse the above and would prevent them from expressing agreement other than to blame "men" in general.

Interesting! Any knowledge of a corresponding female social phenomenon being similarly characterized?
Re:The Return of Industrial Warfare on Thursday June 23, 2022 @05:54PM (#31855610)
If memory serves correctly, after the famous mafia hit “St Valentine’s Day Massacre” in Chicago with an at the time shocking body count of 7, civilian access to then state of the art machine guns was restricted, thus setting a precedent.

EDIT: I don’t think that really answers your question. The real answer is that, to a certain extent the words as written don’t matter so long as enough voters and decision makers decide that they don’t.

Moreover it is considered a very right wing viewpoint here to say that the constitution should be enforced strictly as written or originally intended.

Re:Great Vowel Shift on Thursday April 15, 2021 @12:49AM (#26816298)
"Jargon" sounds pejorative to me, and implies that the phrasing is difficult for outsiders to understand.

"Term of art" only implies that it is the specific phrasing used by practitioners to describe the matter at hand.

Re:Voat Is Shutting Down on Wednesday December 23, 2020 @02:22PM (#25521083)
Your examples are very revealing of a larger problem.

Not only are these viewpoints, which you claim can only be argued in bad faith, supported by empirical evidence, but the people who dare to support them publicly are risking social and financial ruin. If "unsafe" and "marginalized" do not describe their situation, then the words have no meaning.

As a minority from one of the groups at the unflattering end of the crime rate distributions, it is my lived experience that the type of censorship you are advocating for is what makes me feel unsafe.

Inconvenient empirical truths about my community can not be discussed in the sort of polite and caring settings where the seeds of real solutions that don't ignore reality could germinate.

Instead, they can only be discussed in rude and hateful settings.

I can't think of any pair of English words that are distinguished by a voiced vs unvoiced dental fricative at the same location, c.f. 'sue' and 'zoo'.

Does any such pair exist?
