DDG has become so unusable because of AI word vomit sites that I'm finally seriously considering the paid search engine that HN loves... Kagi, I think?
Serial Expirementd Lain is basically the Ulysses of anime. Super dense and cryptic by design.
A gold tag badge lets you do some things like closing a question with a single vote.
The people with the gun fetish are largely on the side of the fascists.
Do you have a hankering for antique furniture?
The LEDs themselves also produce heat.
I miss phones with real keyboards so much.
My EMT cert is old enough to buy booze.
Lost a programming job in the dot com bust, couldn't land another one, eventually ended up in an EMT class and worked a series of traditional ambulance jobs and other health care positions since. Not really using it for anything but some volunteer stuff these days though.
From everything I hear about what programming jobs have become I don't really mind the career change, but man oh man do I miss the pay that comes with tech jobs.
Tigana is my favorite GGK book.
Should have screamed instead of laughing.
That's a different, older collection.
Like half the people here I'm in the middle of Dungeon Crawler Carl.
Finished Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia yesterday, and also have been reading Robert van Gulik's Judge Dee mysteries - currently on The Haunted Monastery.

I think Zodiac would be the easiest book of his to make a movie version of.
Anathem is written in English. There's just some made up words that are generally easy to figure out the meaning of.
Don't forget the decades of time it takes to build the tracks.
Two guys. At one point bags of onions were being sold for less than the value of the bags they were in...
They also got onion farmers to buy back onions they'd already sold.
When the accumulator isn't the second argument in a fold, left or right, it feels wrong and I waste some time cursing whomever made a silly mistake like getting the order wrong.
You want the accumulator second to match up with `cons` and similar functions that expect an initial/existing value second.
Luckily the functional languages I use the most are sane in that respect.
`remove-if-not` was deprecated before the Common Lisp standard was approved and yet it remained (and will never be removed because the standard will never be updated). That's not deprecated for any practical purpose. And it's more convenient than using `(remove-if (complement #'some-predicate) sequence)`
Scheme has `filter` and `filter-not` in the SRFI-1 list library. Both of which can easily be written using a fold to bring this vaguely on topic.
People seem to bounce off Phlebas as a first go at (M) Banks. Player of Games is the usual recommendation for a first Culture book.
I thought New Mexico was being renamed to New America.
> It was the day my grandmother exploded.
Probably Banks's most memorable opening line. Love Crow Road... Have you seen the tv adaptation? I keep meaning to watch it.
China ruled Vietnam for a thousand years (111 BC–939 AD) so I'm sure there was some linguistic cross pollination.
Though tomatoes come around long after that period...
As used by NASA and SpaceX.
Coffee going away was a sad time. I had a tradition of getting some from Center Camp in the wee hours of the morning on overnight volunteer shifts.
