Re:Can gzip be a language model? on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @05:55AM (#49798753)
It's just the best general purpose compression algorithm, in terms of compression ratio to CPU used, for the vast majority of use cases
Re:Grok 4.7 on Monday September 21, 2026 @02:52PM (#49791634)
Do you have any connection to Portugal? I imagine if you have Portuguese in any of your prompts that might bleed into your user profile which becomes a part of every prompt. Alternatively it might use browser language settings
Re:Jev-Leftpad on Monday September 21, 2026 @09:39AM (#49787154)
poor implementation

jev should only have the choice of space_0 or space_1, then recurse on n-1

this extends the implementation to infinite padding and is cleaner code

> How come self-driving came years before LLMs

Did it? Outside of very limited testing zones, self driving _still_ doesn't really exist

Re:Shopify moves back to Native from React Native on Thursday September 10, 2026 @02:47PM (#49648520)
> Just because. There's no tech reason to do it.

They made a separate article on why, which they linked to. Performance is significantly better. The native Android app launches twice as fast for example

Re:Shopify moves back to Native from React Native on Thursday September 10, 2026 @11:36AM (#49645565)
"native" shouldn't be capitalized in the title
Re:The Qantas A380 engine disintegration in 2010 on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @06:16PM (#49543341)
They paid an estimated $300M per aircraft, so even a $139M repair bill is worth it
Re:Monzo Stand-In on Saturday August 29, 2026 @08:37AM (#49489433)
Monzo are a UK bank that briefly but afaik no longer operate in the US
Re:Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era on Thursday August 20, 2026 @07:49AM (#49373346)
Also this line is very weird:

> That’s enough to mean the 11 Pro Fold still feels like a smart purchase right now, but I’m worried it won’t do for long.

How long are these phone's purchasable windows? like 12 months max?

So it's still a "smart purchase" now, despite being out of date? So maybe it's not out of date yet? But will be soon, like literally every other phone?

I remember reading something similar about walking on the part of the pavement furthest from the road, because being an extra meter or so away makes a big difference
They didn't mention anything about folding clothes so I suspect this comment is just an ad
Re:Are AI Labs Pelicanmaxxing? on Thursday July 23, 2026 @01:36AM (#49017322)
When asked for comment an anthropic spokesperson said "it's very unusual for the pelican to fall off. They are built to very rigorous SVG engineering standards"
> Why should a developer use this for anything beyond a pet project?

If it _is_ 50% faster, then that's the reason

Obviously like any new database it's very risky to use so probably only used for niche use cases at first, but if it turns out to be just as reliable as postgres and faster then why not?

Re:The bottleneck might be the air in the room on Saturday July 04, 2026 @11:10AM (#48785970)
I very much doubt submarines operate that high

The ISS runs at 3000-6000ppm CO2. over 7000 is dangerous

Re:CarPlay Is Additive on Friday July 03, 2026 @02:15AM (#48771467)
I'm one of the people that wouldn't buy a card without android auto and carplay support

Car UIs are just universally awful. Even if somehow you find one with a decent UI, it will never get updated and within 5 years it will suck

Re:This blog is written in en-GB on Thursday July 02, 2026 @08:51AM (#48760736)
I'm very disappointed it didn't translate the $1m story to £747,000

I found it completely unrelatable and couldn't follow it at all, not having any frame of reference for how much a dollar might be worth in real money

Luckily the background reminded me i could go and make myself a cup of tea to feel better

I'm convinced this is what causes people to feel productive with vim
Re:Slate EV truck starts at $24,950 on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @09:49AM (#48659803)
On the specs page is say "205 miles" estimated range for the blank slate/minimal version - which is not great

Very surprising it doesn't say the battery capacity anywhere and has no option for a bigger battery

Re:UK Brings in Full Social Media Ban for Under-16s on Monday June 15, 2026 @05:15AM (#48538659)
Headline makes it sound like this has taken effect. It's just been announced

Might start taking effect in spring 2027

Re:Disney erased FiveThirtyEight on Tuesday May 19, 2026 @04:28PM (#48199078)
Because they said trump only had a 30% chance to win?

What if they had said 49%? Would that have made their prediction worthless?

Re:Belgium stops decommissioning nuclear power plants on Thursday April 30, 2026 @05:20PM (#47968366)
The real problem is the widespread usage of Wh as a unit of energy

It would make way more sense to use J and J/h instead

Re:Belgium stops decommissioning nuclear power plants on Thursday April 30, 2026 @09:53AM (#47962533)
It's worth noting that the Fukoshima disaster

1. Lead to basically zero direct deaths

2. Was caused by the forth most powerful earthquake to have ever been recorded in the world (since ~1900), and the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan

3. ~20,000 people died due to the Earthquake

Requiring a nuclear plant in Belgium to be safe enough to survive what caused the Fukoshima disaster is probably not a good use of money

> The fact that it's being done under government contract and (arguably) within the law shouldn't immediately make it any less bad.

Of course it should, to say otherwise is absurd

what, the NHS shouldn't have _any_ subcontracting? All data must only be held by sacred NHS monks in a vault somewhere?

As long as palentir are holding the data on UK servers, to modern data security standards, and they have a contract to do so, they should be able to

Re:Meta to cut 10% of jobs, or 8k employees on Friday April 24, 2026 @06:34AM (#47888277)
> Because I think "1 employee can do the work of 3 now" still hasn't actually been demonstrated

1 employee doing the work of 3 is I think is a stretch

but 1 employee doing the work of 1.1 employees from a year ago I think is almost certainly true - at least, me and everyone i work with is _at least_ 10% more productive, and using AI extensively

> but giving a 2B model full JS execution privileges on a live page is a bit sketchy from a security standpoint.

Every webpage I've ever visited has full JS execution privileges and I trust half of them less than an LLM

Re:Solar and batteries can power the world on Friday April 03, 2026 @01:44PM (#47629699)
Unfortunately human energy use appears to be proportional to the amount of energy available

Hopefully we are able to reach a point of effectively unlimited cheap energy and storage but it's that if overnight we suddenly had enough solar+batteries to power today's usage, we'd suddenly need way more as demand rises

Re:Waymo 13x safer than human drivers on Thursday March 19, 2026 @05:41PM (#47446658)
Hopefully if they ever go to Sri Lanka they get localised tuning because I was surprised to find out flashing your lights over there doesn't mean "go ahead", it means "if you don't get out of my way I will ram you"
Re:Stolen Gemini API key racks up $82,000 in 48 hours on Tuesday March 03, 2026 @08:13AM (#47231819)
not really no

you can set up a cloud function to monitor billing limits and automatically disable billing for a project if it exceeds the limits though

Re:Sub-$200 Lidar Could Reshuffle Auto Sensor Economics on Monday February 23, 2026 @04:18AM (#47119954)
> Tesla are producing cyber cabs now which are 10th the price of Waymo's and can drive autonomously anywhere in the world.

My understanding is that cyber cabs still need safety drivers to operate, is that not the case?

Re:OpenAI Should Build Slack on Sunday February 15, 2026 @03:26AM (#47022012)
"plenty of corporations much larger than Google"?

Google is the third largest company by market cap in the world. I suppose by "much larger" you mean number of employees? Walmart maybe?

I doubt there's many out there using slack
