Perhaps you could hook into a service that already finds pricing and stock from local indie bookstores, like bookshop.org[0]?

Re:Show HN: Huemint – Machine learning for color design on Wednesday March 02, 2022 @03:01PM (#30532200)
I love this suggestion (and hope the OP implements it), but in the meantime, there is a link button on the toolbar right next to the palette that provides a link to the generated palette.
Re:Show HN: Huemint – Machine learning for color design on Wednesday March 02, 2022 @02:52PM (#30532064)
This is fantastic, and I will definitely use it for personal projects in the future!

I see a few requests for practical features here, but I have one incredibly silly request: how plausible would it be to restrict the colors to a set list of RGB values, so one could, say, generate color palettes for physical mediums based on medium color -> RGB conversion lists, such as painting, cross stitch thread[0], or yarn[1]?

Re:The next best thing to OLED is getting cheaper on Monday February 21, 2022 @09:07PM (#30423275)
Just to clarify, 34” 21:9 is the same height (and pixel density) as 27” 16:9 - and it’s definitely just on the cusp of noticeably not-pixel-dense when editing text, but I can see how it would be ideal for PC gaming where you sit a bit further back.
Re:The next best thing to OLED is getting cheaper on Monday February 21, 2022 @05:59PM (#30421863)
That's totally fair! I'm still waiting on Linux to get its act together with fractional scaling, but until then, Mac works fantastic for my work with its fancy brand of fractional scaling w/ supersampling and better font rendering.
Re:The next best thing to OLED is getting cheaper on Monday February 21, 2022 @05:47PM (#30421740)
Eh, the only "ugh" thing about that new Alienware monitor, to me, is the low resolution - 1440p at 27"/34"? No thank you, 2160p or better + fractional scaling just looks so much better for those of us editing text and/or code all day.

Guess it's time to change the `0` in that cronjob to a `*/12`.

> BT mice have never been subjectively responsive enough for me.

Anecdotally, I've experienced very few issues with the Logitech MX Master (both the original and v3) on my Mac via BT - every once in awhile (often enough to be aware of it, but infrequently enough that it's not something I'd consider a problem) the original would cut out for a few seconds, but other than that it tracked perfectly, and I haven't even had the periodic cutting-out issue with the Master 3 (yet; I've only had it for a little over a month now).

Of course, this is dependent on the BT implementation of both the mouse and PC being used, which is something to take into consideration (I've had way fewer BT connection issues in general with MacBooks than with any Windows laptops).

Re:Burn My Windows on Tuesday January 04, 2022 @12:55PM (#29797672)
Heh, my time with Linux was before then, I think - but only by a couple of years. I do recall having some fun experimenting with StarCraft and NFS: Hot Pursuit (the og 1998 version, not the 2010 remake) under Wine, though.
Re:Burn My Windows on Tuesday January 04, 2022 @12:23PM (#29797257)
Thank you! I knew the name had something to do with ice, but the name eluded me.

> Then after I spent a day getting it all working I'd be staring at my computer and it wouldn't take more than an hour or two to think "Ok, that's cool but I want to play a game" or something else that I couldn't do in linux.

Hah, for me, this was when I started getting deep into WINE and also some of the games available for Linux (SuperTux, that one game where you shoot a ball and it sticks to other balls and if enough of them are the same color they disappear, and some DOOM port).

Just wanted to say this is really good for side-project fiction writing, props to you for making a few grand off of it!

Updating FreshTomato has never cleared out my settings, is it possible your install is broken?

Manual updates don't bother me, personally, but wifi throughput is definitely a pain point (my understanding is the lower speeds are due to FreshTomato doing more with the CPU than stock firmware does, which decreases the amount of CPU time that actual routing gets).

I'd personally recommend FreshTomato[0] over OpenWRT, as it has a more approachable UI, is still open-source, and (in my experience) tends to run a bit smoother while needing less babysitting.

Damn, that headline had me very excited right up until the ".com" at the end.
Re:Show HN: Long Range E-Bike on Friday November 12, 2021 @01:28PM (#29202833)
While I agree with this, there are the caveats that both light electric bicycles and heavy analog bicycles exist, and that in many cases the additional mass of the motor and battery may not contribute much to the overall momentum once the mass of cyclist and cargo are factored in.

Note: I commuted by electric bicycle before I switched to working remote, and I have to say that riding a vehicle that tops out at ~30mph when you're slamming the throttle _and_ pedaling as hard as you can on a road with cars and trucks going 45mph (or faster) is a harrowing experience. The few miles where I rode on bicycle paths, though, I capped my speed at 15-20mph (around what a decent cyclist would do) and slowed to 5-10mph when I was approaching foot traffic or other cyclists - and nobody ever batted an eye (except a few people who wanted to know where they could get one, heh).

I understand the fact that you don't have the motivation of "gotta get to work/home!", but you could always get up earlier and go on a looped bike ride before and/or after work (I've actually seen a lot of people doing this as a sort-of "simulated commute", which they claim also helps with creating a mental office-home separation).

Yeah, I feel like they’re being weird because you haven’t heard of such a common tool, but I figure you’re just one of the lucky ten thousand [0] today!

Anyways, I hope you enjoy it! I only recently realized it even can fire off notifications when onscreen text matches a regexp pattern [1], which has been fantastically helpful for some scripts I use for work that take forever to run and I don’t want to babysit but want to know if they error out.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted into oblivion, but for a terminal emulator with a great feature set (minus the X server part), iTerm2 has served me very well (and can integrate with tux sessions to display tmux tabs and windows as separate OS-level tabs and windows).
Just gonna jump on the bandwagon here and say that, as somebody who suffers from ADHD, with all due respect, that is 100% USDA certified horseshit.

At the very least, bill monthly and make the trial not auto-renew at full price. And, since the target market is people with executive dysfunction, I'd love to see your team go the extra mile and default to pushing notifications the week before and day before a user's subscription renews, giving them ample time to cancel if it doesn't fit their budget this month.

Re:Create and share images of your source code on Friday October 15, 2021 @01:01PM (#28880070)
In case you weren't aware of it, MacOS also has a `Shift + Cmd + 5` screenshot shortcut that allows for more configuration (save location; whether to capture the full screen, a window, or a specific area of the screen; and whether to capture an image or a video) - in particular, I find that the screen area capture is better than using `Shift + Cmd + 4`, because you can adjust where the edges of the box are before capturing, rather than needing to get spacing right in one go with the crosshairs.
Sure, the product's website doesn't display the price, and I agree that it should, but I was replying to this:

> it's not displayed on the App Store description either.

Developers don't need to (and, imo, shouldn't) put pricing in the App Store description, because that's what the auto-generated "In-App Purchases" list is there for.

To be fair to OP, Apple makes it dead easy to see how much the IAPs are for a given app (in the case of this one, $2.49 monthly or $24.99 yearly).
Re:Home ownership is still mostly renting on Wednesday September 22, 2021 @12:26PM (#28618306)
I live in a low-mid CoL city, so I guess this is all super YMMV, but even with a 5% down payment, a decent home would run me around $1.5k/mo in mortgage payments (including interest, principal, PMI, and an escrow payment for taxes and insurance), whereas an equivalent rental would run well over $2k/mo, possibly closer to $2.5k/mo.

Sure, I can (and do) rent an apartment for less than a house, but that means rent increases whenever the owner feels like it - my rent has been steadily increasing to the tune of about 5%/yr, and this year it was all the way up to a 7% increase.

Re:Home ownership is still mostly renting on Wednesday September 22, 2021 @11:40AM (#28617634)
The problem is that, in this case, "what else you could do with the money" is limited to one thing - a recurring subscription cost with no asset value acquired. It's a faulty argument that shows a lack of critical thinking on the author's part.
Re:PaperTerm Concept, An e-paper remote terminal device on Wednesday September 08, 2021 @01:31PM (#28460357)
I know that the DES displays go up to 10.1", but I haven't seen displays beyond that size (though I'm unsure if they intend to make larger displays in the future). For the Sharp Memory Displays, I think I may have spoken too soon - looks like they top out at 4.4" currently, which of course wouldn't work for your application.

RLCD is an interesting option, I guess the sacrifice there is readability angles and paper-like-ness?

Re:PaperTerm Concept, An e-paper remote terminal device on Wednesday September 08, 2021 @11:32AM (#28458587)
Have you considered using a DES display or Sharp Memory LCD? I know the first is definitely cheaper than a branded E-Ink display, and the latter has much faster refresh rate and may be more suited to being a terminal (and may also be cheaper than E-Ink, I just haven't looked into it).
Re:Ask HN: Good Online Universities? on Monday August 23, 2021 @02:51PM (#28280293)
I'd say fairly easy, especially if you're not working full-time. It was difficult for me because I have ADHD and that makes the extra focus necessary for accelerated learning difficult, but if you're good at focusing and driving yourself to finish things quickly, I've seen people get WGU's CS degree in as little as 1-1.5 years.

I'd recommend checking out the various subreddits dedicated to WGU, their college of IT, and the SWDev and CS programs (r/wgu, r/wguit, r/wgu_devs, r/wgu_compsci). There are also student-run chat servers on both Slack and Discord.

Re:Ask HN: Good Online Universities? on Friday August 20, 2021 @04:34PM (#28251083)
Came here to recommend WGU, as well - it's my alma mater.

They're not a great school, but if you know how to code and want to fill in knowledge gaps and get a piece of paper at the end, they're a great fit. Plus it's possible to get a bachelor's degree in associate's degree time or less (I did not because I don't have enough focus in my day to do more than a full-time course load alongside a full-time job, but I know people who did WGU's CS course in under two years).

> Astro Slide

Oh wow, that's a very interesting option - I like the way that hinge works, but I fear that a mechanical part that complex in a smartphone is likely to become worn out quickly (source: I had both a Moto RAZR and a T-Mobile Sidekick back in the day and both would barely stay closed by the time I upgraded).

> the Pro 1 X is just a rebrand

This is very interesting to me, would you mind filling me in on what it's a rebrand of?
