DataScience.com provides an enterprise data science platform that combines the tools, libraries, and languages data scientists love with the infrastructure and workflows their organizations need. Check out more details about our product at https://www.datascience.com/platform
DataScience.com Platform is deployed on-premises by our enterprise customers. We make extensive use of Docker to deliver single tenant infrastructure where many different data science workloads can run as containers. If you are excited by solving challenges around containers, their orchestration and management, this is a great opportunity.
We are hiring for multiple software engineering positions on our backend API team. You must be highly competent in Go or Python and have deep expertise in development of backend APIs.
Stack: Go/Python, gRPC/REST, Docker, Swarm/Kubernetes, Postgres & more
We are looking for candidates with good understanding of container service discovery (consul/kubedns/swarm routing mesh), container networking (host/bridge/overlay) and HTTP/websocket routing (nginx/haproxy). Any knowledge of data science tools (Jupyter, RStudio/RShiny etc) and workflow is a plus. We also have one open position that requires deep Hadoop expertise.

I don't have a good idea of the requirements at Spotify, but looks to me that using a streaming system like Storm or Spark Streaming would solve the 30 min event delivery delay they are experiencing w/ unstructured text -> Avro conversion. The latency for delivery would go down to sub-second levels.
Big thumbs up to the devs & thanks!
Producer/Consumer semantics are pretty similar. Partitions in Kafka are Shards in Kinesis terminology.
One big difference is retention period in Kinesis has a hard limit of 24 hours (no way to request increase on this limit).
Kinesis IMO is easier to use being a managed service. I have performed a Kafka to Kinesis migration & have found Kinesis easier to use. Plus, AWS Lambda makes consuming Kinesis a breeze (if your usecase suits it).
- CQL stands for Cassandra Query Language. As a user of C*, I don't remember anywhere in docs it claiming it conforming to the SQL standard. They do mention it to be "similar to SQL" which is a fair comparison.
As a counter-example of another somewhat similar database, AWS DynamoDB. The absence of a CQL like syntax really frustrates me.
- Data Modelling: Effective data modelling is difficult in all DB systems, inherently more so in NOSQL or non-ACID distributed DBs.
- Counters & Collections: I feel that criticism is legit. I felt similar pains too. I've learned the lesson there not to trust all marketing claims.
I tried to evaluate Scala after getting to know some basics & was thrilled at how concise code becomes in Scala vs Java. However, Scala does have a steep learning curve. I found that there were many different ways of implementing the same thing, which is time consuming in the beginning. There is opinion that it pays off later, I was not able to get to that stage because of initial impediments.
As somebody else mentioned, using Spark API in Scala was a joy. Same code in Java becomes several times more verbose.
At the end of the day you need to evaluate your team & develop a consensus. Your team might have some valuable opinions too.

Hi!
Are you looking for someone who can solve your business and engineering problems? It is hard finding good engineers who can contribute to product vision end to end. I like contributing to bigger picture product vision & solving the nitty gritty technical issues. If you are a young startup I would love to have a chat with you and find out about your vision, technical issues & challenges and potentially help you accelerate product development.

"But, he hinted to me, PHP and Zend will be providing client-side app-enabling tools."
There are already bunch of client-side app-enabling tools thousands of devs are using with PHP already. Holy shit .. but .. Zend is coming up with some awesome batshit secret new sauce for client-side that will work with PHP! Mind = Blown!
