The latest was 9/11 and that is still quite relevant to us today.
Re:So where are all the AI apps? on Tuesday March 24, 2026 @10:53AM (#47503524)
The short repetitive sentences, and the “it’s not x, it’s y” tone
When you buy a Windows license, you expect at least a basic level of support from them in case something goes wrong. It is built into the cost.
Also - many many institutions have declared that what’s happening is a genocide, and unfortunately that hasn’t changed anything. (Perhaps naive of me to believe that it would change anything)
Valid question, but just look at the huge amount of R&D / the tech companies in Israel. Even if it’s near conflict, I don’t think companies care
Re:Try Deep Think in the Gemini App on Friday August 01, 2025 @10:14AM (#44757150)
I see - I feel the same way about Copilot (as my company uses the Microsoft ecosystem).
Re:Try Deep Think in the Gemini App on Friday August 01, 2025 @10:00AM (#44756982)
I’m never the one to defend AI, but what do you mean? Is it the “AI overview” that pops up on Google? Other than that, I would say Gemini is definitely less in your face than ChatGPT for example
Re:Wikipedia: Signs of AI Writing on Sunday July 27, 2025 @11:56AM (#44702225)
The fact that it’s still highly likely to write like this and hallucinate information.

bless you as well for linking this !
Re:Sora: Creating video from text on Thursday February 15, 2024 @09:42PM (#39392495)
Not pressuring you at all if this is hard to talk about - but if you're open to sharing more about how you were affected, I'd love to listen
Re:A search engine in 80 lines of Python on Wednesday February 07, 2024 @03:43PM (#39294030)
Huh? I check Hacker News multiple times a day - it's not odd to click on an article within an hour of it being posted.
Must children's use of time be "productive"? They have their whole lives to be productive - outright banning video games is not the solution in my eyes
Re:Focus and Flow: trade-offs in programmer productivity (2021) on Saturday January 06, 2024 @03:42PM (#38895235)
Excel? How does that work - first time I'm hearing of it being used in that way
Re:x86-64 Assembly Language Programming with Ubuntu (2022) on Monday December 25, 2023 @05:20PM (#38766731)
This is incredible! Putting on my holiday to-do list :)
Re:Lapsus$: GTA 6 hacker sentenced to life in hospital prison on Thursday December 21, 2023 @12:38PM (#38723713)
being sentenced to life for hacking is out of proportion
Re:It Sure Looks Like Phones Are Making Students Dumber on Tuesday December 19, 2023 @10:10AM (#38696509)
During the school year, teachers put in significantly more than the 8 hours they're physically at school. Marking, course planning, etc take up quite a bit of time that teachers must put in outside of work.
Re:What made Apollo a success? (1971) [pdf] on Monday December 18, 2023 @03:28PM (#38687736)
Any resources you'd recommend for learning those principles/standards used in more "rigorous" fields? thanks :)
Re:Hacking ADHD: Strategies for the modern developer on Wednesday November 15, 2023 @05:30PM (#38283534)
I used to be your daughter! Super quiet, got all my work done on time, was seen as "gifted", but would lose absolutely everything (and I mean everything).

I really suggest some sort of setup to maintain structure as she gets older - being aware of a diagnosis or having medication / therapy would've really saved a couple painful years in university for me

Re:You don't need to work on hard problems on Tuesday November 07, 2023 @10:18AM (#38177757)
I'm confused as to why you're bringing up "being cancelled" - it's not relevant to the conversation in the slightest.
Would be incredible if it was the same person
Re:RegEx Crossword on Friday November 03, 2023 @12:48PM (#38131379)
Have you given letterboxd a shot? Can be surprisingly hard
Re:Advice to a Novice Programmer on Thursday October 26, 2023 @11:17AM (#38026716)
This discussion has been hashed out many a time. While they may not be an engineer by designation (PEng), the word is used often enough to refer to programmers that it is pedantic to reiterate the fact that they aren't "real" engineers.
Re:DALL·E 3 on Wednesday September 20, 2023 @02:45PM (#37588240)
I agree - however is it really productive to the discussion if multiple people are commenting the exact same thing every single time? Upvoting one comment that shares this sentiment is enough, in my opinion...otherwise any valid criticisms are overshadowed by this outrage over the name.
Re:Are Any Words the Same in All Languages? on Friday September 08, 2023 @04:21AM (#37430979)
You're saying this like it's an objective fact...?
Re:College students are struggling with basic math on Saturday September 02, 2023 @04:26PM (#37365208)
Are German schools behind? In North America, learning algebra means we learn to solve for x/y : solving quadratic equations is pretty much the ceiling for "algebra" and even that isn't taught until grade 8, usually grade 9.
This comment is a beautiful example of just that - if I read this correctly, you're already judging them for their take on spirituality . Please correct me if I'm wrong - but personally, approaching new ideas with an open mind, instead of a mind that has already come to a judgement, has served me very well .
Re:On (My) Caste on Wednesday August 30, 2023 @01:52PM (#37326072)
Usually not - maybe if the name is super traditional, however first names are pretty much equal across castes.
Re:On (My) Caste on Wednesday August 30, 2023 @01:44PM (#37325939)
If someone really wanted to find out, they would be able to.

You could misdirect someone just passively asking, however as soon as the questions got more pointed, you'd have a hard time keeping up the charade.

Something as simple as the clothes you wear or the food you ate or the mannerisms you had could "give you up".

Re:Why old books smell so good on Saturday August 19, 2023 @02:34PM (#37191697)
Please list more things if you have some time
Re:The EU wants to cure your teen’s smartphone addiction on Wednesday August 16, 2023 @12:39PM (#37149684)
Respectfully - I must say, I feel as though you have a lot more control over how your daughter uses her smartphone than you think you do. In my eyes, smartphone usage cannot be compared to toxins like alcohol/drugs/tobacco, a global solution is impractical in this case.
