So many hopeful (?) patents on this stuff - kinda sad to see.

I once received a letter (while at Chalmers) from the US - it was addressed to <my name> S-41296

Let's have google check that: https://www.google.com/search?q=45+TB+%2F+8+billion

That comes out to about 3 pages by your measure.

also possibly quite hot from recent interactions with the atmosphere

Re:Hacker's Guide to Numerical Analysis on Friday March 19, 2021 @07:10PM (#26519103)
I think it was more a matter of attitude. Never a great way to actually explain something.
Re:The Hundred-Page Machine Learning Book on Monday January 25, 2021 @04:13PM (#25908973)
I've read this book recently and found it a very useful overview of ML. It is a bit theoretical which is good for somebody that comfortably reads math notation. Also the notation is pretty consistent which makes connections between methods and algorithms stand out.
Re:How I Collected a Debt from an Unscrupulous Merchant on Sunday December 06, 2020 @01:34AM (#25321629)
The numbers are small but I can see the satisfaction in picking an approach and sticking to it. Thanks for the write-up.
Yet these renderings were not made with that choice.
These images were rendered with a "white" bias. Facial features is one thing, but skin color is clearly not conveyed by statues, yet a clear choice was made here.

points for spelling globbing correctly :)

I name the thing with the nose Bruno.
My take on the Drake equation is that it gives you a way to play with numbers and break down your guesses in a rational way. The article suggests an estimate of N(Earth) so this is one step in the direction of not entirely ruling out an N<1.
Stable against what perturbations? What impact would a large body passing through the system have? Stable as in self-correcting (up to a limit)? What is the limit. Even long running accurate simulations of the three body problem are sensitive to perturbations...

Re:Amazon Snowball on Wednesday October 07, 2015 @01:43PM (#10347560)
The math for the time to transfer comparison is interesting:

"Even with high-speed Internet connections, it can take months to transfer large amounts of data. For example, 100 terabytes of data will take more than 100 days to transfer over a dedicated 100 Mbps connection. That same transfer can be accomplished in less than one day, plus shipping time, using two Snowball appliances."

With a 100 Mbps connection it takes over 100 days [1] but with a 100 times faster connection (10 Gbps) it takes less than a day :)

[1] Assuming no network overhead it is 92.6 days

It would be interesting to hear what some of the sources are in the training set. My first impression was Goldberg variations meets ragtime.
Re:Extracting My Data from the Microsoft Band on Thursday December 18, 2014 @03:13PM (#8769399)
A nice hack and a good list of the things you may want to fiddle with if you want to explore phone applications calling home just in general.
Re:Electricity stored as temperature difference on Friday November 21, 2014 @09:45PM (#8644525)
I was wondering what that means too - maybe the strange unit ($103 kWh per hour) is a clue to what they are talking about. Remember this is temporary storage for wind or solar energy, presumably to be extracted when the sun goes down or the wind stops turning the blades.
Re:The best small computer in the world (1968) [pdf] on Sunday November 02, 2014 @05:09PM (#8548280)
Nothing like having Don Draper make promo shots for your new computer.
In the first two images you link there are dual mode indicators - one in the middle and one just by the value itself - in what looks like a manual they are both shown lit up at the same time which seems more like a problem with the documentation than what is shown in the actual aircraft picture (your third link). I'd venture a guess that in "V/S" mode you'd see that indicated next to the number just as you see "FPA" in the cockpit image.
Re:How Gauss Taught Us the Best Way to Hold a Pizza Slice on Friday September 05, 2014 @03:24PM (#8275804)
I've seen this tested with an uncooked egg. A lot of pressure was required and when it finally broke the mess was unbelievable.
Re:Who smeared Richard Feynman? on Saturday July 12, 2014 @03:19PM (#8025522)
A little gem from the article: "It was an extremely ugly, long (2 years!) divorce hearing: it made the newspapers because of Bell’s allegations of “extreme cruelty” by Feynman, including the notion that he spent all of his waking hours either doing calculus and playing the bongos."
Re:100 Supercharger Stations on Thursday April 24, 2014 @07:08PM (#7643688)
I wonder if using the supercharger deteriorates the battery more than a more gentle charge (I am warned about this for fast charging my Leaf). Find it interesting that they ask that question on the supercharger FAQ but don't answer it:

"How often can I Supercharge? Is it bad for my battery? Supercharging does not alter the new vehicle warranty. Customers are free to use the network as much as they like."

Re:The danger of "language" in programming (2009) on Friday December 27, 2013 @12:17PM (#6971513)
I got a syntax error somewhere on this line: "Not because it's wrong (although it is), but because it's right."

This is interesting however - how about substantiating it with a concrete example? "C++ does have many nuances. It is a very interesting and very subtle language, to the point even machines (namely compilers) disagree about its meaning."

Re:JavaScript particle simulator on Tuesday November 19, 2013 @09:02PM (#6765901)
It seems like the ensemble heats up. Could it get a little energy dissipation?
