Key quote:

>In addition, the team is working with renowned art historian and curator Dr. Lowery Stokes Sims, who is providing additional mentorship and professional development.

In art as in politics - nothing says grassroots like the additional mentorship and professional development by a renowned establishment member.

Re:Npm Audit: broken by design? on Wednesday July 07, 2021 @01:43PM (#27763800)
I recently implemented my own npm vulnerability audit tool for the CIO department of a major org - it just adds 'vulnerability' in red next to any npm-based project in their spreadsheet.

That's such a presumptuous title, the author does not know what other powerful tools my toolbox lacks.
Practically speaking, that's the only approach that can.

Although it's often hard to tell, most software developers aspire to being treated like professionals rather than specialized serfs, and part of being a professional is accepting responsibility for your work.

Of course it doesn't preclude holding their employers responsible as well.

This is a losing proposition that will only lend credence to the inherently violent opt-out approach to data collection.

Instead how about a do-not-hire-or-collaborate-with registry of the individual contributors participating in projects that employ those tactics and see how they like trying to opt out of it.

Nah that was the old MS, new MS just replaces own with rent.

C#, F#, Typescript, JavaScript via npm

And the next language to become unusable without a microsoft-controlled ecosystem is...
Loving the "are we ok with this ?" take - as if anyone cares.
It's not affectionate, it's condescending - much like 'geek' when used unironically and not by geeks to refer to themselves.
Boffins ? I haven't realized theregister employs such classy people as Thomas Claburn.
Username checks out.
What are the odds that the chips that don't feature AMT/ME don't have it physically as opposed to it just being crippled in firmware ? In which case if one is worried about government backdoors this should alleviate exactly zero concerns.

Come for the fun of having to setup and admin you own server, stay for the feeds of furries pics and posts in languages you don't speak.
Something that is (crucially) missing from the article but appears in the paper: his ability to read words describing numbers like "five" remains in tact, and so is his ability to read Roman numerals.

I wonder how many people here know about mc (as in midnight commander) and its builtin viewer/editor.
Jeff Bezos probably also can't promise they won't use startups AWS usage to find out as much as they can about their business in an M&A or just competitive analysis scenario.
Half of HN personally responsible for doing exactly this kind of thing for a living, shifting in their chair uncomfortably... I umm... just doing my job...
Re:Resignation Letter on Tuesday July 14, 2020 @04:05PM (#23837102)
We apologize for the unexpected cancellations and will be cancelling those responsible shortly.
The German translation would need an alternate title.
Hmm, which one has megacorps with private armies, runaway AIs and hackers hustling for a living ?
William Gibson otoh thinks we're on the right track.
Re:Google to Invest $10B in India on Monday July 13, 2020 @08:52AM (#23820207)
It's largely a co-dependent relationship at this point, the advanced economies are as dependent on Chinese goods as China is on foreign currency, meanwhile China is actively developing future foreign currency revenue streams through long-term investment in developing economies.
Re:Google to Invest $10B in India on Monday July 13, 2020 @06:56AM (#23819369)
China hasn't "blown" anything - it is set to compete with US head to head on the world stage not with India over US investments.
One decade at a time man
But how are we to weed out the weak and the inadequate from the ecosystem if not by having them struggle through 1970s UI conventions to accomplish basic text editing operations ?
Re:Taxonomy anarchy hampers conservation (2012) on Friday July 10, 2020 @09:40AM (#23791356)
So not about gender and race identity huh
What racist FUD ? If the jurisdiction is territorial then how would state LEOs be able to enforce state laws even against non-tribe members on that territory, and if its limited to offences committed by tribe members there are potential victims both native and non-native Americans that are being harmed here - those who thought of themselves and their properties as being under protection of Oklahama state law (and paid taxes for it) and suddenly find it voided in some or all circumstances.
That's all nice and well, but what does it mean for the 1.8 million non-native-american people in that area, can one of them now rob another and not be guilty of a crime ? Or does it mean every robbery/arson/murder there can only be investigated by the FBI and charged in a federal court ?
