Re:Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half on Sunday November 01, 2026 @11:14AM (#50326973)
About five years ago, I swapped my gas domestic hot water to a heat pump unit and my electric bill actually went down. Just being able to patch and insulate the roof exhaust from the gas unit saved more in spaced conditioning than the added (but minimal) electric load from the new heat pump itself.

BTU's are BTU's regardless of their source. It sounds like your brand new house was not built to spec, or poorly designed. Any certified ASHRAE technician should be able to meet the required demand load with properly sized equipment. The consequences of fuel type should manifest in differences of up-front and ongoing expense, not comfort.

According to industry leaders, that would be a terrible allocation of resources[0]. Those wafers belong in a datacenter!

I don't think the blame lies with the intelligence of the Azure team. I would argue that there exists structural flaws in the business incentives which deprioritize 'users' from 'customers', along with the stark lack of consequences for security failures.
It's a couple hundred lines of code. You could just, like, read it.

It's handy to open a TTY connection in the browser, or to delegate your tailscale MFA account as remote authentication.

tmux control mode (-CC) is the killer feature I'm waiting to land in ghostty
Re:Tailscale SSH: Investigation and remediation update on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @04:23PM (#50265255)
I've always had to manually enable this feature. I've never experienced it on by default across multiple platforms and deployments.

I picked up a 24GB 2TB M2 air and it's still cruising along. Short of having the foresight to pick up 512GB Ultra prior to the rampocalypse, I'm happy.

I always recommend Turing's Cathedral: The Origins of the Digital Universe[0] by George Dyson when John von Neumann comes up, it's a fabulous read.

I think it's unfair to call the workers unskilled - but accurate that professional sculptors were not retained to execute the works.

It is an incredible place. We visited by chance with a spare day in Krakow and had no idea what to expect. It is both historically fascinating and visually stunning to experience!

While I agree 100%, I'm more interested in the variable refresh down to 1hz that comes with 'Promotion' to save on battery when viewing lots of static text.
I just finished listening to the audiobook of Mark Kurlanskys Salt: A World History[0]. Fascinating and highly recommended.

I'm no materials scentist, is this a physically accurate description?

Man, first Felix Reiseberg[0], then OpenCode 2.0[1], and now this in the last 24 hrs. Really giving off heavy Myst vibes. They are briefly interesting encounters, buy I deeply hope this isn't a legitimate UI trend.

It's hardly even skeuomorphism, it's a almost digital twin rendered with Phong.

Re:Ask HN: CAD for wood working with LLM support? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @10:38PM (#50098477)
A friend of mine was borrowing the shop of a very well known luthier to build some furniture. I stopped by to check the whole situation out and I found them both with their brows furrowed trying to work out some tolerances for a joint on a scrap piece of paper. As an architect by training, I quipped "at some point you'll have to start making proper drawings of you projects ahead of time", to which the luthier replied "the plans are always the problem, you're better off letting the wood tell you how it should be put it together." to which I had no reply..

>It's just my opinion

Fair enough. I find TOTP to be a PITA. I share your ire with user hostile platforms, but I see the passkey protocol as a net benefit to the status quo. It's unclear how a platform's choice to use a stricter version of the protocol is any different than their choice not to implement RFC 6238 at all.

Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @08:03PM (#50097394)
Smells like FUD. Who's providing the ability to ban software? Providers are free to implement authentication requirements like SDC vs MDC the same way they can enforce minimum password entropy or maximum password age.

In practice I'm aware of more 'lock in' behavior in the form of restricting which TOTP client is accepted than for Passkeys. There are many more bespoke 'Authenticator' apps than there are passkey implementations, many of which disallow registering codes in third party wallets.

Bitwarden also syncs TOTP. Given it's the same client, why push folks to opt for a provably weaker protocol with higher potential for user harm?

Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @06:19PM (#50096248)
The internet is built on possibilities and sustained through consensus. Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good.
Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:57PM (#50090877)
Outside of a corporate Microsoft Entra login policy, I'm not aware of Bitwarden passkeys being widely denied in practice.
Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:10PM (#50089956)
Bitwarden[0] can store and supply passkeys (and passwords of course) across macOS, iOS, Windows and linux seamlessly.
