Re:Ask HN: What did you read in 2025? on Friday December 26, 2025 @03:56PM (#46396157)
I read "Pyramid Principle, The: Logic in Writing and Thinking" by Barbara Minto. Highly recommend it.
I took too much chalk and "ripped" part of my skin under my hands.

Where can I read more about the techniques and/or bad habits? Interesting.

I recently started lifting weights. I just bought gloves. I like this tip though - thanks.

Can someone provide book titles that are affected by this...?
Re:‘Luddite’ Teens Don’t Want Your Likes on Friday December 16, 2022 @01:41PM (#34018356)
Yeah, I have it activated. But I want to experiment with the idea to abolish my phone as much as possible.
Re:‘Luddite’ Teens Don’t Want Your Likes on Friday December 16, 2022 @01:37PM (#34018304)
I want to start doing this too. I bought a flip-phone some time ago, but it never stuck.

My usage is pretty much: listen to music, use (Google) calendar, texting, FaceTime.

Any surfing is plain doom scrolling and not productive.

Recommendations for me? Analog/simpler substitutes?

For ppl that has gone down this path - how do you feel now?

Re:Ask HN: Strategies for Being More Eloquent? on Friday December 09, 2022 @04:00PM (#33926413)
I like the idea of this, but $149 for a deck of cards...?
Re:Ask HN: Do you look angry while you work? on Wednesday November 30, 2022 @10:18AM (#33801881)
OK, yes you're right - it would indeed be off topic.

I actually recognize that line of reasoning myself. But since losing weight and working on myself (e.g. going to a therapist) I feel much better.

My point is: There was bigger issues at play for me when I didn't want to work from an office...

Re:Ask HN: Do you look angry while you work? on Wednesday November 30, 2022 @09:47AM (#33801447)
I agree that you don't need to change who you are by "fixing" something.

But it is a weak argument for WFH by itself, don't you think?

How far off is bpy (Blender's Python API) do you think?
Re:Everything I wish I knew when learning C on Monday November 28, 2022 @09:49AM (#33774267)
But wouldn't one be required to include a particular header in such case (i.e. the correct header for defining a particular type)?

I mean, no typedef names are defined in the global scope without including any headers right? Like I find it really weird that a type ending in _t would be UB if there is no such typedef name declared at all.

Or is this UB stuff merely a way for the ISO C committee to enforce this without having to define <something more complicated>?

Re:Everything I wish I knew when learning C on Monday November 28, 2022 @09:24AM (#33773945)
How can a (badly chosen) typedef name trigger _undefined behavior_, and not just, say, a compilation error...?

I find it difficult to imagine what that would even mean.

Off topic: What level of sophistication about modern CPUs is _good_ to have? And where does one learn it? Resources?

Say that I want to work with HPC-type applications and otherwise just squeeze the most out of the processor, e.g. quant finance / trading systems.

Re:Ghana plans to buy oil with gold instead of dollars on Friday November 25, 2022 @07:47PM (#33748669)
May I ask if you think price stability is of any benefit for a given currency at all? If not, why not?

My intention is to justify inflation from this end.

Re:KDE runs on the Apple M2 (with full GPU acceleration) on Friday November 25, 2022 @02:31PM (#33745950)
Thank you! I am learning something new every day.
Re:KDE runs on the Apple M2 (with full GPU acceleration) on Friday November 25, 2022 @01:49PM (#33745549)
Off topic: A team of security researchers at MIT showed that M1 was hackable by design (although on a very narrow attack surface IIRC).

Did Apple fix _this_ particular issue with the M2?

I am just generally curious, because I remember when the research about the M1 hit the news. Probably mainly hype than an actual threat. (?)

Re:Ccache – a fast C/C++ compiler cache on Thursday November 24, 2022 @06:05AM (#33729951)
How does it compare to zapcc? My team used it a few years ago.

Same here. But I always associated it with stress.
Re:LPD: Libertarian Police Department (2014) on Tuesday November 22, 2022 @07:33PM (#33713534)
I think "AnCapPD: Anarcho-Capitalist Police Department" would be a better title, no?

Funny read regardless.

Re:The Genius of Binary Space Partitioning in Doom on Monday November 21, 2022 @10:32AM (#33693660)
What is a good learning path (books, videos, ???) to take in order to understand modern graphics programming? At the level of Vulkan or Metal, say.

I have had a bird's eye exposure to shader-based OpenGL but don't feel I have a good intuitive understanding of how the GPU operates.

Re:Rust in the 6.2 Kernel on Friday November 18, 2022 @08:14AM (#33654091)
I have worked as a C++ dev, but am definitely not a C++ expert by any means.

My take however is that C++ is inherently a complex language due to deliberately not sacrificing backwards-compatability of the syntax and semantics, which has been creating a mess as the language has evolved: there are many, many things to define semantically in order to "fit" a new piece in this old already-elaborate puzzle that is the C++ standard.

You cannot say the same thing about Rust.

Please correct me if you see things differently.

Re:Estonia: Become an E-Resident on Thursday November 17, 2022 @06:29AM (#33637474)
Do EU citizens have something to gain from an Estonian e-residence at all?
But why do they need this from public school over say any other social ... activity (?). For example sports.

I am genuinely questioning whether public school makes children socially mature rather than only being a traumatic experience for many pupils, for no other reason than that public schooling is the default choice.

> - Difficult transition to the cliques and more aggressive social dynamics of public school

Am I naive in thinking that the aggressive social dynamics of public school adds no value whatsoever to a child's or teenager's development?

Like, _why_ would anyone want to put their children through that? Is it _really_ integral to a person's social development to understand how to interact with bullies (worst case)?

I admit that I am rather nihilistic about public schooling, but I'm open to changing my mind.

Inspiring! I am on a similar journey as well.

I haven't heard the term "zone 2" cardio -- can you expand on that?

Can we get in touch?
