Reinventing the wheel. So many hours wasted on creating something that already existed in the form of PHP libraries or Python libraries that are written by much smarter folks. I tell my guys now, tools such as Ansible exist, don't try to write a whole Bash program to mimic what Ansible can do.
I used to follow their blog and they are at the forefront of the FIRE movement. No thanks. It's crazy the length they go to in order to minimize their expense. They def have a lot of help from their family. It def is click bait and what they're doing isn't "healthy" in my opinion. We let our kids be kids and that means spoiling them on many things. I'm not referring to iPhones or cars, but more like I'm not going to worry about whether I should buy two icees or one icee to split between both kids.
Re:Take a look at Nomad before jumping on Kubernetes on Sunday February 28, 2021 @07:48PM (#26298586)
We'll have more but I can't justify running six from the get go.
Re:Take a look at Nomad before jumping on Kubernetes on Sunday February 28, 2021 @12:09PM (#26294824)
I looked into Nomad and my problem is having to run a minimum of six machines in a cluster for a few microservices. The argument could be made that we wouldn't need container orchestration for a few, but if we plan on scaling I don't want to have to deal with a fleet of servers. With ECS or EKS, I would only have to worry about the worker nodes so it's less to manage

amen brother
the one pic is from Philly, an ROTC exercise.
yeah I'm not sure about your last paragraph. when I interviewed at DO, the few business folks I spoke to were adamant on taking on AWS. I kind of scoffed but hey I'm not running DO.

so much for "Hipmunk isn’t going anywhere"
Re:Having Kids on Saturday December 14, 2019 @02:43PM (#21791679)
I have two kids (6 and 3) and if I had to do it all again I would not. I miss my old life. Not that it was anything special but the things we take for granted like grabbing a quick bite to eat at a diner or going to the bathroom becomes a chore. I realize it gets better but damn, years of tending to the kids flew by and I can't for the life of me recall what I did for fun.

my problem has been that I'm an overachiever and I've been career oriented for the most part of my life. I know there's a saying where folks on their deathbed would never say "I wish I could work another hour," but I don't know anything else besides work. I definitely need a hobby and I feel bad at times when I resent my kids because I can't do what I was able to do before.

you guys are doing it all wrong. take it from us Asian folks. it's called the finger test. the amount of water above the rice should come up to the first line on your finger as you're touching the rice. yes you have to stick your finger in the pot.

having grown up where our main staple was rice, my parents never made burnt or soggy rice. oh and having a rice cooker prob helped as well.

Yeah Reddit.
Re:You might not need Kubernetes on Wednesday November 21, 2018 @01:15PM (#18504743)
You prob dodged a bullet then. We give out take home exercises (not my idea but whatever), and we tell the client we don't care which config mgmt you use just pick something you're comfortable with. We use TF+Ansible but we would never frown upon work that's something using Salt, Chef or CFEngine.

You play for the Trailblazer?
Re:Announcing Linode Block Storage Volumes on Thursday February 01, 2018 @10:46PM (#16288250)
I remember when I interviewed with them, they were adament about catching up with AWS. I asked what they thought of Linode and they said "not in our radar." They billed themselves as an AWS competitor but I just don't see it.
Re:Cash-Burn Threatens Blue Apron 3.5 Months After IPO on Thursday October 19, 2017 @04:27PM (#15511274)
For me it's going to the store and getting all the ingredients. Either I can't find it (obscure ones) or they come in bulk and I can't consume all of it after making the meals.

I don't use any of these meal prep services, but I know people who do and they love it.

How is this different from Vault?
Re:Spaces: Scalable Object Storage on DigitalOcean on Thursday September 21, 2017 @04:59PM (#15307292)
I'm using both S3 and Backblaze's new offering. Can't beat first 10gb free.
Re:Android 8.0 Oreo, thoroughly reviewed on Tuesday September 05, 2017 @07:48AM (#15174248)
Can anyone confirm if they brought back the ability to select a wifi/Bluetooth connection via a drop-down from the swipe down option? You know, without having to click and go into the screen to select the device you want to connect to.
Re:ProtonMail Now Supports Bitcoin Payments on Wednesday August 16, 2017 @02:38PM (#15029981)
No the point is it stopped him from using/trying the service. If he really was interested he would've found an alternative payment solution
Re:ProtonMail Now Supports Bitcoin Payments on Wednesday August 16, 2017 @02:12PM (#15029758)
So you couldn't just use a CC or some other form of payment? Seriously?
Re:Wasabi – Simple storage solution on Friday July 28, 2017 @01:38PM (#14876032)
Same here though I'm leaning towards backblaze since there's no minimum.
Re:Android O Beta Program on Thursday May 18, 2017 @08:50AM (#14366740)
Like many previous posters, my N5's battery is starting to die. I've changed it once and it hasn't helped. Otherwise, it's a decent phone and it has served me very well. I've thought about possibly going to the new OnePlus when it's released, BUT the lack of "long-term" support (more than 2yrs) bothers me.

I bought an iPhone 7 just to give it a whirl, but I eventually gave it to the wife. There's something about that back button that I can't let go.

Re:Rsync.net – Cloud Storage for Offsite Backups on Tuesday January 24, 2017 @07:45AM (#13470865)
Why not S3? I use Arq with my Mac to back up my important doc, which gets encrypted in my S3 bucket. However, I'm still looking for a viable method to backup all my photos and videos. Right now they reside on multiple external hard drives.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2016) on Wednesday December 28, 2016 @09:10PM (#13275243)
These guys are always hiring for the same position. Either they're too picky or people end up leaving once they join.
Re:Consul 0.7 on Thursday September 15, 2016 @11:18AM (#12506881)
Wish they would fix the issue with the watch triggers.
Re:Set server timezones to UTC on Saturday July 16, 2016 @12:44PM (#12106933)
My place uses GMT+4. It fvcks with us every fall.
Re:Show HN: Leantime – OpenSource Project Management on Saturday August 22, 2015 @09:11AM (#10102404)
Eh you didn't miss much. I logged in and there's nothing in the UI but two big buttons. I clicked on each one and nothing happens.
THis looks great, I've been looking for something like this for an existing project.

Question, I notice that if I submit test msgs, it all works and displays in the development project area. However, if I open a new browser tab and navigate to the same project, i dont see the history?

I'm looking to use this for deployment purposes. I can have the window open initially but what if a user decides to join our deployment process a few minutes later? he/she won't see what had happened.

I concur, I created https://iKeepm.com and I get a lot of inquiries for a business version. I just dont have time to create one.
Re:Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell? on Monday April 28, 2014 @11:12AM (#7660443)
I recently re-launched w/ a new design (frontend and backend). Also implemented Stripe. I have one user who signed up for the Plus account. i'm seeing more and more companies sign up.

The two most requests are mobile apps and a multi-property feature. I think there's a bigger market for property mgmt companies.
