News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

scumbert

There aren't quite as many thriving former industrial buildings as there are rusted hulks strewn about.
I am talking about developers here, not Joe Schmo who lives his life in one ecosystem or the other.
The free market is your ability to pick up your toys and focus on Android. That's not a commentary on whether Apple is right or wrong, mind you, but there's no questioning it's their platform.
Which is it, detractors-- Palantir's products are smoke and mirrors, or they are effectual at making society less free?
Underrated take. They shouldn't be able to do this. This should flag Zoom as PUP for malware removal, if it weren't the new go-to.
Re:NBCUniversal Sold $500M Stake in Snapchat on Thursday March 12, 2020 @08:32AM (#22556110)
Slams is way too common. It's very hard to read the news without seeing "slams" somewhere.
And (lack of) proper pilot training

Even funnier, forks over social identity/ideological differences
Re:Google Earth finally available in browsers other than Chrome on Thursday February 27, 2020 @12:07PM (#22435179)
or Microsoft Silverlight, and soon Flash will be finally deprecated too, and I'm sure it will still be present in enterprise training modules and other nonsense
Re:GitHub was down on Thursday February 27, 2020 @11:19AM (#22434551)
Is it not ostensibly the same company, just with a new owner...?
They shouldn't be blocking Firefox either, but let's be clear-- Chromium Edge makes even less sense given it's a "cousin" of Google Chrome.
Non-Chromium derivatives are blocked as well, yes, but neo-Edge is a Chromium derivative.
The sad thing is when Google websites refuse to work on Edge Chromium. Switch your user agent to match Chrome's, you're all set.
Re:EU Commission to staff: Switch to Signal messaging app on Monday February 24, 2020 @08:23AM (#22403752)
Yes, European Commission, continuing to sell yourselves and democracy out to China is something you'd better take great care in keeping private.
Re:What Coronavirus Does to the Body on Thursday February 20, 2020 @03:23PM (#22378240)
Yes, let's not lump the CDC in with the WHO. The two organizations have struck entirely different paths.
Google lives in a browser. Your average consumer's computing rarely leaves the browser today. Apples to oranges.
Re:On Computers: First Rule on Updating Software – Don’t on Monday February 03, 2020 @12:05PM (#22226147)
Can confirm it worked as of January
Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your bookmarks? on Tuesday January 21, 2020 @12:54PM (#22109393)
The bookmark manager built into the latest version of Microsoft Edge is adequate and inoffensive

My philosophy is that the bookmarks toolbar is for "tools" and things I want myself to visit more often (a page for a good habit or a project)

Other bookmarks are split into basic categories like "Media" (A/V content), "Vintage" (old/nostalgia websites), "Games" & etc.

Re:Every Google result now looks like an ad on Tuesday January 21, 2020 @12:45PM (#22109275)
Unironically switch to Bing
They have a court order to access the data, similarly, you're not burglarizing a house you have a warrant to enter

doesn't mean Apple has to accommodate

Re:Laptop OEMs – make a proper high-end AMD laptop on Tuesday January 07, 2020 @11:31AM (#21981478)
AMD is cooperating closely with Chinese firms and has them to thank in part for its resurgence in the desktop die space.

I wouldn't be surprised if these partnerships lead to more AMD PC's from small OEM's in the near future, perhaps only for the Chinese market.

Chinese home-grown fabrication is also at parity with AMD Bulldozer, and likely to accelerate with acquisitions of European chipmaker technology.

Notably meanwhile China has effectively blocked Qualcomm from making similar moves purportedly on antitrust grounds.

Re:Americans are retiring to Vietnam on Thursday December 26, 2019 @04:21PM (#21886895)
Strange he didn't see the irony of "insult" when referring to Asia as a monolith
Re:OnlyKey: Open-Source Alternative to YubiKey on Thursday December 26, 2019 @04:19PM (#21886880)
To do something about this requires supply chain security that you won't find outside governments that are able to realize economies of scale.
Re:Google clamps down on free storage on Thursday October 24, 2019 @03:54PM (#21348538)
Didn't expect a response now I feel bad. I figured I was raging in an invisible thread. Deep down we both know you were right!
Re:Google clamps down on free storage on Thursday October 24, 2019 @09:55AM (#21344685)
Dear rabid mod: detaching subthreads that spur intelligent discussion seems to run counter to your supposed goal. There is no reason Bloomberg should be expected to produce analysis and coverage for free..? ..Unless the person suggesting such comes from a fringe ideology. Hence my comment! :)
Re:Google clamps down on free storage on Thursday October 24, 2019 @09:53AM (#21344669)
This thread was detached by rabid mods, but in response to your comment, why is Bloomberg not entitled to charge for their self-produced analysis?
Re:Samsung Kills 'Linux on DeX' with Android 10 Rollout on Monday October 21, 2019 @04:23PM (#21316880)
> Any ideas what Google changed in Android 10 to break compatibility?

Samsung's desire to continue developing the feature

No, the same people who argue one often argue the other
The mental gymnastics in this thread, yeesh. "The U.S. should leave and stop interfering!" and "The U.S. should stay and help the Kurds!" are not simultaneously possible.
Blizzard, Tiffany, NBA, what happened with South Park... we're on a roll this week, and that's only what made the headlines.
