I do think we need better enforcement of the laws we already have in place, the roads are becoming the wild west, and not in a good way. I think I love the tech and the idea, but not how it's currently being abused. It'd be great for Amber Alert scenarios, consistent reckless driving, a better way to deal with high-speed chases, and just a way to prevent all of the dangerous traffic violations that occur simply because they're not enforced and people just see others doing it and assume it's ok.
They're always very clear about it when a new model comes out. You have to click away a banner to continue using the service. There's not much they can do to make it any more obvious without it being a major hassle for all the people who understand versioning.
> very hypothetical scenario
> tailor-made scenario
Either you have chosen to ignore news from all parts world throughout pretty much all recorded history, or you advocate for needless murder.
Okay, but how would you design a system that could address the scenario above without being used as a "convenient torture device"? You don't get to change human nature on either side.
Oh in that case, just give the people whatever they want. I assumed the discussion was about the scenarios this tool was designed for, aka not "unarmed and nonviolent" people.
The problem I think needs a solution is a group of mostly good people being riled up with the well-studied herd mentality, laced with people doing bad things. You want to be able to stop the few bad people (without killing, obviously) with minimal disturbance to the good people, but at any time you cannot know who is good or bad (i.e. you can't enter the crowd to target specific people), and at any point the good people can turn and become malicious actors, contrary to how they'd behave in most circumstances.
Maybe, but do you have a better solution?
Have you seen tin foil in a microwave? I think they'll be the first to stop laughing :(
They grew up watching Batman breaking people's backs and giving severe concussions, but because he didn't kill he was Good.
This must be a New World Order device because they can't get past my foil hat! Nice try, lizard people.
There's also the escalation timeline. In a hypothetical situation where nonlethal force is being used, but there's a threat that requires more than a gentle "please don't" type of heating, I don't think we'd want it to be limited. Gentle crowd suppression is great till someone pulls out a gun or knife, and though it's debatable opinion and there are a lot of factors to consider, I think a few collateral 2nd degree burns beats switching to a rifle and opening fire into the crowd.
Or it's a cop out. I could totally outrun Usain Bolt, but by design I don't push to set new World Records. I will increasingly show faster times though.
Is this a reply to my comment? The first sentence appears to be putting a lot of words into my mouth that were never spoken, and the second is completely tangential.
You tried to assert that nobody writing meaningful software has ever thought something like "hey, y'know what, that's actually kinda cool! I'm going to change my mind about LLMs being useless", which is easily false. They don't need to declare they're generals to agentic armies, they just need an open mind.
Which it seems all writers of great software do. And you don't...
Either you can put it in a linter and automate/force it, or people/agents will take liberties. I feel like there's usually exceptions where a well-meaning guideline doesn't properly fit a specific scenario.
Unlike Linus, Jeff Dean, DHH, John Carmack, Guido van Rossum? I really want to know who you think writes "100% of the software that people actually use and actually keeps the real world running"
I doubt it, Rust developers compete only with crossfit and vegans in the race to be noticed.
You 'member Kubernetes and Microservices hype cycle?
Low effort posts just telling people to pay money for advice is bad advice for sure, really it's almost worthless. I don't think anyone asking basic legal or medical advice is unaware of Doctors or Lawyers, they're just looking for either best-effort or things that shouldn't require looking for and paying for professional services. There are enough bad lawyers and doctors that lead people astray too, which also takes away from how useful the "advice" is- perhaps a recommendation for a certain lawyer, or some relevant literature.
I'd never just tell someone to go "ask a software engineer" if they had questions on database configurations or any other specific problem.
They trained on reddit too hard. Everything is "Talk to a therapist, lawyer up, consult with your medical doctor". It's just used for deflection after someone gives (usually bad) advice.
What do you think AGI means? ANI would arguably be better here.
Wow that's a wild world view to have. Not sure how it holds up to reality when all the engineers are completely free to do whatever they want, but his companies are massively more successful than any others. Even with the previous World's Richest Man Bezos trying to poach everyone he has and copying/funding pretty much all the same ideas. Dare I ask which multi-trillion dollar companies you've been able to steal?
I appreciate the response, but quotes of people spreading known misinformation is not addressing the main concern. These are still just opinions.
Yes- if they were using it for drone attacks and the service stopped/slowed, that was not Starlink, because it never would have happened in the first place.
Can we narrow down asking for a link to be some sort of legitimate news? These are links to forum posts linking to bluesky posts of "political commentators" that are factually incorrect.
Starlink != Starshield. Musk does not own Starshield. SpaceX does not own it. It's like blaming a flight route cancellation on Boeing.
Haha you really just can't win as a builder. Half the people despise him for doing anything for money, and the other half hate him because he cares for politics over money.
Lots of quotes from Ukrainians about what they are accusing SpaceX of, and even misleading titles "NO WARNING BEFORE STARLINK CUTS", but the actual meat of it is pretty hidden.
Starlink never allowed use for offensive drone attacks, Starshield is what they were using, and it is a product fully controlled by the USG.
Sheesh, you claim to know so much about me (so incorrectly) that I doubt the veracity of any of your claims. Why do you want so bad for me to be racist and sexist? Do I have to be in order to fit your world view?
Yes, it's widely reported from both sides. Even people like Andrew on Channel5 covered people coming over in droves. I really don't know of anyone refuting it, just whether or not it's good or bad.
Yeah I've never seen this despite buying from amazon multiple times a month if not week. I assume they're living somewhere with weird regulations or something.
I think people conflate decentralization with redundancy or resilience. IMO it just means you have multiple points of failure instead of one.
