Didn't some unattended kid choke on one and their parents sued?
Re:NFL warns teams not to destroy their Surface Pro tablets on Monday September 26, 2022 @03:28PM (#32987190)
Seems like it would be but in my (limited) experience watching NFL games the announcers just call them iPads anyway. Then they or their co commentator corrects themselves with the sponsor friendly Brand Name.
Re:Boffins build microphone safety kit to detect eavesdroppers on Monday September 12, 2022 @11:40AM (#32811971)
I just blacklist the device driver for my integrated mic & webcam in Windows with group policies. Good luck monitoring me with a mic that the OS doesn't even recognize.

I ever want to record anything I have an actual mic and audio interface that I use that I can unplug when not in use.

Re:Last Pass Hacked on Friday August 26, 2022 @11:09PM (#32615249)
I'd do a password manager and a VPN provider. Then spend a ton of money on ads on podcasts and youtube videos (which is odd since neither VPN hosting nor password managers make enough money to pay for that many ads).

They'd probably all have a similar catchy name. Maybe one that implies that it's from a foreign country known for having more consumer protections but is actually based 10 minutes outside of Langley Virginia.

Oh wait...

Re:My son has set the house up with a Pi-Hole on Monday August 15, 2022 @12:16PM (#32471574)
AdGuard allows 'approved ads', which for some of us is a dealbreaker.
Modern tractors are more technologically advanced than a Tesla.

If you can run a modern planter or sprayer with autodrive/gps then copy/pasting a string of text into a terminal is not going to be a problem.

Re:Why Firefox Deserves Its Sad Decline on Monday July 18, 2022 @10:34AM (#32138870)
Firefox the browser is great. The developers are great. Pretty much everyone else at mozilla (the execs, marketing, and the graphic designers that feel the need to reinvent some minor part of the wheel every 3-5 years to justify their existence) can all pound sand.

Someone needs to do to Firefox what Firefox did to Netscape, except this time instead of ditching a legacy codebase they need to ditch their woeful corporate leadership.

Brave browser is literally an intelligence gathering honeypot funded by the guy who created a big data analytics company with an extensive history of working with intelligence services [1].

But yeah. That darn google being the default search provider is very troubling.

Doesn't AdGuard allow 'approved ads'?
They have to be decrypted to be played back. The analog hole cannot be closed.
Apple made over $4 billion selling ads last year.
Is this why my 2021 iMac sounds like a jet engine spinning up when I watch a youtube video in Firefox?

I just assumed this was yet another attempt by google to sabotage the competition.

Re:Mac: It Just Works–Terribly on Friday June 17, 2022 @05:27PM (#31784585)
I eventually settled on CursorSense to fix this because nothing else I tried actually fixed it. Sucks to have to pay $10 to fix something that is a basic OS setting on literally every other modern desktop OS.
Assuming you can trust them. All 3 of the major baseball card grading companies are being investigated by the feds for widespread fraud right now. Same companies also grade Pokemon & Magic the Gathering cards and there have been some high profile fakes of those (that were graded as authentic) highlighted recently as well.
Re:Making macOS Behave Itself on Wednesday May 25, 2022 @08:35PM (#31512795)
I think it also requires a M1 processor.
Why anyone ever buys anything other than a ThinkPad (if you absolutely must go with Lenovo) I have no idea. Pretty much every other line of laptops they make is infamously bad, and has been for decades.

Someone hurts my dog, on my property, with no warrant? And they aren't even cops?

They better bring more than 30 people with them is all I'm saying. And some EMT's because I live like an hour from the nearest emergency medical treatment.

But semi-anonymous posts on social media are?

If so there's a lot more Navy SEALs than I was lead to believe.

I think you mean to say "Valve has been paying developers to fix the AMD drivers for years now, since AMD can't be bothered."
A great example of this is the album Death Magnetic by Metallica.

The album version is compressed to hell but the version that shipped with Guitar Hero has none of that extra compression, presumably because someone who wasn't deaf mixed it.

The difference is night and day.

I feel like if you have to teach them about load balancers as college interns, FB needs to find a better school to pull interns from.
Re:How Slack Stays Secure During Hyper Growth on Saturday January 20, 2018 @10:35AM (#16193675)
Slack was described to me as IRC + tmux for people too stupid to figure out irc & tmux.

In my (limited) experience this seems true to me.

Re:How the US Pushed Sweden to Take Down the Pirate Bay on Thursday December 14, 2017 @10:42AM (#15923100)
You mean the one I used last night to watch Dunkirk? Great detective work there Lou.
This is how it was for many years. Decades even. It was fine.

They weren't exactly "homemade" servers either. There was an entire industry of game server rentals and these were datacenter rack servers connected to fat pipes.

It wasn't unusual at all to find third-party servers with way better pings (and higher player caps) than the official servers.

I don't remember the official bf1942 servers ever having 32v32 player matches but that was fairly common for thirdparty servers for example.

Looking to do something similar and was worried about compatibility for the disk enclosure. Mind sharing which one you went with that works with freebsd?
Re:Guitar browser game with a real guitar on Sunday September 24, 2017 @06:24PM (#15326809)
Neat tool. Would be nice to be able to set tuning as I keep my guitars in Eb.

Also I'll be "that guy": Can we get a tab mode - maybe with an option to display the note as well for us complete amateurs?

That looks a lot like the format for auto-generated method comments from VS.net ~2013 or so.

They have been trying for years. I still have several emails from before I retired offering $250 MS point gift cards or Xbox One consoles just for submitting an app for approval.

Still couldn't be bothered.
