Has anyone tried LinkAce? I'd love to hear someone's thoughts on YaCy vs LinkAce.

This is great timing. After looking at YaCy for my Synology NAS a few week ago, I looked at some alternatives. I like the look of LinkAce, though it seems to be less popular and I haven't found much on how a setup on a Synology NAS works.

I'd love some advice, I have a massive number of bookmarks across dozens of folders. Something like this is exactly what I'm looking for.

Re:Browser Extension to Bypass Media Sites Paywalls on Wednesday June 15, 2022 @10:52AM (#31753806)
FYI, I was still blocked by WaPo's paywall after the first article, even though this extension is showing itself as on in Chrome (tried restart to no avail).
I saw a heartbreaking YouTube mini-documentary on Facebook moderators.[1] The American workers seem to get the "lighter" flags like animal abuse, which is more than enough to cause trauma with daily exposure. I shudder to think what the offshore moderators go through when dealing with human/child abuse flags.

In my view, Facebook clearly wants this to be a temporary evil, so they can use the data from human moderators as a training set for automated ML-based moderation. But I wonder how long people will have to endure this for those models to reach an acceptable efficacy.

I'm actually trying to learn compute shaders specifically. I've followed all the tuts and guides I could find and have made some neat things, but I still want more depth than I can just find through Google. If anyone has any recs for further study I'd really appreciate it :)
It's In-Q-Tel, not Q-Tel. I actually interviewed there a few years back. Very cool company.

Can you please elaborate as to what causes that hidden power structure (i.e. what goes wrong)? In your opinion, is the idea of flat management inherently flawed or is it just hard to execute? Curious to hear your thoughts as someone who's actually tried it.

I did a quick google and it appears so. :/
Re:Was Uber’s Branding Done While Uber High? on Thursday February 04, 2016 @08:12PM (#11038678)
WOW. Unbelievable. Who the hell hires these people? They make you go through half a dozen technicals if you're going to be an engineer, but they let the homeless guy across the street run their PR department?
Re:Was Uber’s Branding Done While Uber High? on Thursday February 04, 2016 @06:47PM (#11038207)
Don't forget BLT sandwiches! And moms.
Re:Was Uber’s Branding Done While Uber High? on Thursday February 04, 2016 @06:46PM (#11038201)
This can't be real... right? God the advertising industry is so much worse than I thought.
Re:Was Uber’s Branding Done While Uber High? on Thursday February 04, 2016 @06:39PM (#11038160)
I am so, so confused by Uber's marketing video. I feel like its satirical. I'd love to hear if anyone has the inside scoop of how it was made/ how Uber employees feel about it.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2016) on Monday February 01, 2016 @04:24PM (#11015579)
Do you guys use a recruiting agency called Adeptima? I got an email from someone there today claiming to be recruiting for you and it seemed a little sketchy.
Re:Ask HN: How happy are you working as a programmer? on Monday February 01, 2016 @11:18AM (#11012632)
Woah, can you expand on this? Are you a contractor or a government employee? What makes it laid back? Are the deadlines just more reasonable?

You're kidding, right?

Re:Feds Raid Hoverboard Booth at CES on Thursday January 07, 2016 @10:56PM (#10862823)
I used to work with the guy who made this hoverboard (the US company, not the Chinese one). He's an incredibly talented engineer, I'm glad he's able to fight crappy competitors that are hurting the hoverboard industry.
Re:The Amazon Whisperer (2013) on Wednesday December 30, 2015 @06:33PM (#10815118)
Since you asked, I'd say you're probably being downvoted because the fact that the creator is Jewish is irrelevant to the comment you replied to. OP was having a balanced discussion about the ethics of providing review products whereas your comment declares the creator a scammer without any explanation or supporting evidence.

IMO I don't think religion, even if its "super-duper" is really on topic in a discussion about the quality and ethics of Amazon reviews. I hope this doesn't come off as critical, I'm just trying to explain where your donvoters may be coming from.

I just read (and enjoyed) your article. I loved Zurich when I visited, but I don't speak the language. Are there opportunities there for coders who only speak English?
Re:Zero Latency, the Future of Immersive Gaming on Friday December 18, 2015 @01:11PM (#10759878)
Wow, so weird to hear you actually had a good experience. You mean to say that the rifle's orientation in game matched its orientation IRL (i.e. you could hold it like a real rifle and not hipfire it with the laser)? What about the frame rate drops? IIRC they were constant and impossible to ignore.

I don't mean to contest your experience, I believe you of course, I'm just shocked to hear someone actually enjoyed themselves at Zero Latency.

Re:Zero Latency, the Future of Immersive Gaming on Friday December 18, 2015 @03:09AM (#10757313)
I hate to say it but I'd cancel. Seriously not worth the money. A guy I talked to at a Melbourne VR meetup said he tried it when they were in alpha and again recently and was shocked to see basically no improvement. This is only anecdotal evidence, so take it with a grain of salt, but I'd say reconsider.
Re:Zero Latency, the Future of Immersive Gaming on Thursday December 17, 2015 @02:26PM (#10753771)
Yeah, I loved the Vive. The controllers added so much to the immersion, and it was really cool to be able to walk abound in VR without getting nauseous.
Re:Zero Latency, the Future of Immersive Gaming on Thursday December 17, 2015 @02:24PM (#10753757)
This was a couple months ago. I'm not recommending any other product or service. I don't know, how does one prove they're not a shill? By Doxing himself?

AFAIK Zero Latency doesn't have a competitor in Australia (much less Melbourne) so I'm not sure who you think I'm secretly working for.

Re:Zero Latency, the Future of Immersive Gaming on Thursday December 17, 2015 @01:07PM (#10753120)
Guys, please don't go to Zero Latency. When I was in Melbourne I coughed up the 80 bucks and went, and it was truly a horrendous experience. They had the worst tracking I've ever seen in VR. The gun's rotation was off by 40 degrees, even after switching it out and resetting it. There was constant stuttering, and severe frame drops were the norm, not the exception. And to top it off the game itself had crap graphics, embarrassingly bad AI, and glitched like crazy.

At a VR meetup I talked to several people who had went, and not a single person had a good experience. I am amazed and baffled by all the good press they're getting.

And for context I've tried the Rift DK2, the Gear VR IE, and the HTC Vive.

Re:Ahmed Mohamed: 'Clock boy' seeks $15m from city and school on Monday November 23, 2015 @10:04PM (#10618921)
When I was in middle school a kid got suspended for bringing a paper mache firework to class (basically just a fist-sized cylinder with a wick). It turns out it was completely hollow and didn't contain any black powder, but he still got a suspension since it looked like a bomb. The kid was white. Islamophobia is very much a real problem, but it seems reasonable that any kid in the same situation might get in trouble as well. I haven't read the Steve Jobs book in awhile, but didn't Wozniak bring a metronome to his high school that they mistook for a bomb? Again, I'm not saying racism and Islomophobia in our school system don't exist, but there's a long history of educators mistaking harmless devices for explosives, and I think its a tad presumptuous to say that this issue is only about race. Just my 2c.
I owned the Note 4 Innovator Edition. Its better than you'd think. Very low latency, excellent tracking, solid design. But a noticeable Screen Door Effect is a downside, more so than resolution IMO. You may not get full presence, but undoubtably its worth a mere $99.

How do you mean? Patents are generally reasonably expensive to pursue in time and money. I'm curious to hear more about the prank aspect of this patent application if you care to share.
First off, there's no need for all-caps. This isn't 4chan.

> The fact that assumptions are considered as some unavoidable, forgivable, intricate part of science is part of what fuels anti-science and politics.

No one here, as far as I can tell, is saying, 'oh well, science is full of assumptions therefore science is invalid.' The problem is not with science in general being valid or invalid, but rather with the sorts of experiments being conducted right now. Studies that are not replicable most of the time are bad science, which is different than science itself being 'bad.'

I'm not saying such faulty experiments and studies are unavoidable and forgivable. Quite the opposite, they're flawed and need to be scrutinized more, not less.

Finally, this is not an incurable problem. Bayesian math is one potential solution. There are others.

I have a relative who lived in Montana for several years. I'm told its a world-class hiking state and is much cheaper than Colorado. I went once to go fly fishing and it was gorgeous. Only the winters are supposed to be terrible, so you'll want to time your stay well.

If you're more inclined towards Europe then I'd recommend Hungary, a very cost-effective place to live.

Good luck!
