News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

schrute

Nice article and all but what are the recommended pragmatic steps for individuals, besides casting votes for political candidates who care?

You're fighting ignorance with more ignorance.

Re:Amazon Pip Horror Story on Friday February 04, 2022 @09:28PM (#30216454)
How are other companies setup that make them distinct from Amazon?
Re:Amazon Pip Horror Story on Friday February 04, 2022 @09:16PM (#30216381)
Hey so I have to ask, do you actually like what you do? I don't mean that in a rude way or anything. I just honestly don't know what people do at FB anymore. Do you work on the core platform or are you working on Mark's new idea?
Re:Lapce – Fast and Powerful Code Editor written in Rust on Tuesday December 14, 2021 @09:30AM (#29551860)
The product crashes on MacOS Catalina, Arch, Ubuntu and Win 10. Lightning fast indeed. /s

I can see your viewpoint so I'm not sure why you are getting voted down.

The quote above is from the maintainer. Looks like he is happy to let it go!

The actual reports show that the tool was being used maliciously. People had no idea that their machine had a RAT installed, so of course AV vendors would take action.

You must have missed the part where it is now 10,000x faster. Given your complaint about performance this should excite you!

This is extremely hard to believe with, you know, John being John.
Re:Firefox Release 89.0 on Tuesday June 01, 2021 @09:52AM (#27354480)
That seems like it should be at least a customizable setting and IMO on by default. Let’s hope the HN thread full of people pointing it out helps.

No, it isn't. There is literally years worth of user feedback and it still hasn't been addressed. It's a common complaint and to say they haven't "engineered" their UX is putting it lightly.

> Please be kind when you get something for free.

Something being free doesn't mean it can't be criticized. Nothing said was unkind.

People like you are no longer receive attention for shouting and throwing a tantrum. You and your negative comments are drowned out.

So, what happened to HN? It has improved. Hop aboard and take a swig of positivity buddy.

Very succinct. I agree 100% and wish more people had this line of thought.
Re:Show HN: Books Paul Graham recommended on Twitter on Wednesday August 05, 2020 @03:17PM (#24064435)
Slightly off topic but I couldn't help but notice this scam on Amazon for the book Paul Graham recommends about Microsoft, "Hard Drive: Bill Gates and the Making of the Microsoft Empire".

It is one of my all-time favorite shows. I am so glad I found someone recommending it about a year ago. If you are on the fence give it a go, you won't be disappointed.
Re:OpenDiablo2 on Friday June 26, 2020 @11:05AM (#23652773)
You are boycotting people playing a 20 year old game that was made by Blizzard North, who closed their doors in 2005, over someone being banned in 2019? Why don't we just cancel every business who has ever done something we disagree with?
Re:Advice to Young Web Developers on Thursday June 18, 2020 @08:34PM (#23569748)
You must understand the point I am missing. Why learn a language in the LISP family as a young developer? Does it somehow improve you overall?
Re:Advice to Young Web Developers on Thursday June 18, 2020 @08:30PM (#23569723)
What is your reasoning behind the recommendation to learn Clojure? I am generally unfamiliar with it but saw it was a general purpose language. What makes it so valuable to be included in your list?
