My 40s have been way better than my 20s or 30s. It's not even close. The best part of your life does not have to be behind you.
Re:Meta might consider leaving Europe? on Friday February 04, 2022 @11:02AM (#30208519)
Insiders are often very overexposed to a single company because it's their primary form of compensation. You can sell every share you have and still be overexposed due to unvested shares. I would advise against interpreting "I don't want to tie my life savings to this company" as a lack of faith.
Re:The Problem with Ethereum on Wednesday August 11, 2021 @02:30AM (#28138746)
There are good points here, but I think analogizing the situation into a class struggle within a society is both confusing and specious. Ethereum is not a civilization: it's a piece of FinTech.
Re:Tesla Rescinds Job Offer on Tuesday May 25, 2021 @07:42PM (#27284264)
I mean anybody can sue anybody for anything, but to win damages you'd have to prove that either Tesla intended to mess up his previous job or that they were negligent (based on a legal duty of care). IANAL, but this seems unlikely.
Unless you want to watch HBO Max, in which case you need a dongle….
But it is optional. There's social pressure for all kinds of things, including getting married and having children.

You have to figure out how to get food & shelter and follow local laws. Everything else is unequivocally optional. I would argue that "not seen as optional" is just a way of saying "I don't own up to my choices."

Can we take this solved problem and replace it with a new one that has details we haven't figured out?

On the third hand, you’re deliberately using sexist language to … secretly fight sexism? I think a continued evaluation is indeed in order.

Is there a particular reason why it's women in Congress who make you skeptical? Is there some context I'm missing here?
Re:U.S. Accuses Google of Illegally Protecting Monopoly on Friday October 30, 2020 @01:57PM (#24945023)
Google and Microsoft were not the first web spiders.

A famous example, Yahoo!, didn't walk away from search and partner with Microsoft because of the difficulty of building an index. They did it because it was going to cost billions per year to try to keep up with Google in producing results.

I'm not arguing there's no work to do in building an index, but the problems of crawling and indexing can be solved by cash. They're a moat against small challengers, but not against well capitalized ones. Ranking and filtering require lots of research and tuning. This is the moat against even the well capitalized.

Put another way: do you really disagree that Google would still easily dominate search based on result quality even if small startups got access to their index data?

How these are weighed against one another in evaluating his character is left as an exercise to the reader.

Re:U.S. Accuses Google of Illegally Protecting Monopoly on Tuesday October 20, 2020 @03:31PM (#24841448)
Spidering and building an index is relatively easy. It's not the barrier to creating a search engine, and I don't think you'd find that Microsoft's index is materially smaller than Google's. The hard part is figuring out how to turn that content into relevant results.

They're not private attorneys who have the US as their client. They work for an organization (DoJ) that has the US as its client. That organization can have whatever policies it wants about how cases are allocated among its staff.
Re:Teens' mental health did surprisingly well in quarantine on Wednesday October 14, 2020 @02:13PM (#24779685)
A better way to think about it is that grades and test scores are probably not enough if you want to get into an elite school. Universities want interesting people who will enrich the campus and their fellow students.

One easy way to demonstrate this is through extracurricular activity. If you founded a club, excelled in a sport, engaged in charity, won contests, etc., that's a sign that you're somebody who does things in a community and not just a test taker.

(There is room at even top schools for test takers—but you're going to need extremely uncommon scores to stand out that way.)

Re:Yahoo Groups is closing down on Wednesday October 14, 2020 @09:43AM (#24776415)
In 2015, the valuation of the company was $4 billion below the valuation of the Alibaba stock it held. A popular interpretation of this is that the main Yahoo! operations were considered to have negative value by investors—though the reality was a bit more complex than that.
Re:Yahoo Groups is closing down on Wednesday October 14, 2020 @09:39AM (#24776374)
Yahoo! hasn't been a company for years. It's just part of Verizon's media group.

Re:Pressing YubiKeys on Friday October 02, 2020 @03:25PM (#24666156)
This reminds me of something that happened at a company I worked at maybe ten years ago. An employee was fired for setting up a webcam that pointed at his 2FA key generator so he could log in remotely without having to carry it around. Hacker mentality, but not in a way that won him the respect of the security team.

Appropriate? That's the wrong question. Everything in the market is negotiable. The question to ask is why Apple has more leverage. (I think you will see the answer is "many, many reasons.")

Re:It Is Never a Compiler Bug Until It Is on Wednesday September 30, 2020 @02:42PM (#24642118)
I found and reported a nasty compiler bug with basic arithmetic just a few weeks into learning C++. My previous programming experience was in BASIC and 6502 assembly, so it was my first experience with a compiled language. My bug report was accepted and the vendor issued a quick patch.

After this formative experience, it took me years to stop instinctually assuming that I was less error prone than the compiler.

If you're in ByteDance's shoes, this sounds like a perfect counteroffer to the US government position. If you believe the US concern might be more politics than governance, you offer a solution that gives a political win with minimal operational impact.

Are you sure? Maybe the flaw is the notion that the marriage partnership should be expected to last for life. There are real reasons why some personal partnerships benefit from a legal framework that allows for division of labor and joint decision-making powers.

Re:Math.min(Math.max(num, min), max) on Thursday August 20, 2020 @12:43PM (#24225185)
At the risk of starting a style debate, this may be easier to read if you write it like an if-else:

    a > max ? max :
    a < min ? min :
              a
