Re:Mystery of 60-Second Fluctuations in Power Grids Solved on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:13AM (#50337087)
"But you rarely have realtime insight at individual busbar level for each substation"

This is kind of understandable, the amount of data would be huge. When faults happen though, recordings are automatically made available.

Some of these measurements can have surprisingly high frequency sampling, even though the grid itself feels "slow".

Re:Zero click, silent, remote Android DoS on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:12AM (#50289405)
There was also a bug related to positioning requests for emergency services that crashed android phones:

"core Android Telephony Framework GPS race condition from the early days of Android (roughly 2011–2014)."

My AI was unable to find any existing webpages for this though?

Also there was this:

Re:If IPv4 Were Land on Thursday October 29, 2026 @09:52AM (#50289060)
In Sweden CGNAT was not a thing for a long time, the large incumbents still have their huge blocks of IPs so its "just" go to them if you want a pulic IP. Apparently smaller ISPs do use CGNAT, so its fairly common.

Me as somewhat of a nerd, even doubt if I need a public IP, seeing how cyber security is looking today.

Re:Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:20AM (#50271798)
So.. when I google "median income eu vs US" I get some completely different figures: $51k / $64k-65k median for the US, and €21k in the EU.

So the median household in the US has 3 working adults? Is $211k household according to that page.

Even with corporate MITM setups? I somehow doubt it..
Out of 24 discord servers I am on, only 4 are related to games.

Most are software related, or why not genealogy or mesh networking?

I never started using discord for gaming, I just find its everywhere.

Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:53AM (#50259352)
We are encouraged to, and I do, use our tokens not for "throughput" but mostly for increasing quality.

We are basically not limited by the time it takes to write code, we never were. But we ARE limited in the time it takes to wrote ancillary code: CI and testing code being the biggest, but also tools.

Iv'e started on 2 bigger sub-projects that could help with coverage and finding really hard bugs that I would _never_ have even touched before, becuase I could never have fitted it with my regular work that actually has high priority.

We are recruiting in Sweden and apparently its very hard finding good candidates. Most are fresh from very short (2 years) educations or other special cases as opposed to having had 4-5 years of university and maybe some experience.

Fun thing though, we recently let a consultant go due to relying too much on LLMs.

"Microsoft also used to employee engineers focused soley on testing software"

Is this weird in any way? I live in EU land, but this does not seem too uncommon. As a developer Ive had assignments where I only wrote unit test, another where I was reponsible for daily CI running well (though both moved towards development eventually). I heard just the other day about a competitor where you did not write your own test code.

You should try strudel.cc
Re:AI Models Can Provably Hide Arbitrary Capabilities on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @03:43PM (#50077516)
This feels a bit image convolution where you can "hide" and "recover" information that is very blurred. To draw a paraelell this is then highly dependent on not being distilled, since deconvolution really needs that numerical accuracy.

floats in a deterministic lockstep engine... oh dear me!!

It has to be possible to use fixed point arithmetic?

There are noob lobbies, the problem for me was that I just happened to be on the winning team a couple of times in a row, and suddenly my rank was too high for noob games, even though I still was one.
I found he got a lot less interesting when the videos became longer.
Re:The 15-year search for a band that charted once and vanished on Thursday October 08, 2026 @04:51PM (#50012088)
I heard a song with, a really not that unknown artist, that I thought was awesome. Ive tried finding it now a couple of times, but nope..

The title is R.T.N.R I think (Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer) but in a metal version.

I also know I read an article about the artist, and he/they were very reclusive and did not want media attention.

Its just the song was great!!

Why is it that we need subsidies? Farmers and truckers "cannot make do" without subsidies! This is a well known "fact". But it seems very lopsided and most likely is why we can't have nice things.
This almost smells like thought crime... Minority Report when?
Re:AI Makes Me Sad on Friday October 02, 2026 @02:05PM (#49936628)
Being sad because you missed the boat on startups is just silly.

How many stocks did you "miss the boat" on? In hindsight we all have missed the boat so many times, we need to see that pondering this is meaningless.

I once mined 50 bitcoins ON CPU. Yeah, I sold it for pennies. Did I miss the boat on anything? Sure, but not really more than on any stock or anything else where seeing the future would be needed for sure success.

Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @04:32PM (#49913984)
Looking at benchmarks... and thinking about this "release a new snapshot every day" thing that seems to be going. Would it not be blever for AI companies to "happen" to use different days per benchmark? Just.. whichever ones happens to be maxed at day 1, put that number down. So for each benchmark you run it thousands of times with slightly different RL tunings, and just cherry-pick the best ones!

This would explain why benchmarks are seemingly meaningless.

Yes, but youre not allowed to use it commercially afaik. Even a youtube clip which is monetised is commercial, I guess.
Are these constantly filming without user control? How about regular cameras, just ban them?
Re:Claude Opus 5.5 on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @03:39PM (#49806979)
Same feeling with oai models, wich I use 99% of the time. Sometimes I ask it about it, and it always come up with a likely explanaton but dear me it does many rounds of tool calls sometimes!
Re:GPT-6 Sol and Luna on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @02:57PM (#49806339)
I'm scared now, my employer only allows Luna and Terra on 5.6. I really hope they will allow Sol then on GPT 6.

Funny thing is they very recently also set a real limit per-user/month, so why even limit the models because theyre "too expensive".

Re:Laya the open source version of Jev on Saturday September 19, 2026 @12:30PM (#49767893)
How come its completely unable to understand when it does not understand the script? Why was this no in the training, or was it?

The routing feels like such a hack to me...

Re:Astra for Coding: Why Are We Doing This Again? on Friday September 11, 2026 @01:07PM (#49661747)
I mean I have asked LLMs about the SAME things in our legacy codebase probably 50 times now, (because I always forget, and that I don't understand much of it). And I have yet to get a perfect summary, a perfect diagram of overall concerns.

Its still much better than trawling thrugh code yourself, but they are far from all-knowing. I have to say they have gotten 10x better in just a year as well. Or they are very good bullshitters and just sound confident.

Re:Astra for Coding: Why Are We Doing This Again? on Friday September 11, 2026 @01:02PM (#49661685)
This is still weird to me, the agents are super-good and clever most of the time, but I do feel I always need to direct them to a small area to focus: much like a human!! If you just ask them to implement things, they never (for me anyway, were not allowed the most expensive model! Terra is it for now) suggest they should stop adding code ontop of code and refacor, I always have to poke them to do that. Having done that once, and added some tests, they suddenly become aware that, yeah, maybe we should test stuff.

The LLMs seem to have no innate ability to understand whats a good direction a higher level. I mean, if you ask them about it, they will actually kinda figure that out, too. But always need that nudge...

So if you as a developer do not have the innate drive to ensure quality, the results will be terrible in my experience.

If you DO spend the tokens on quality though, it can also be kinda awesome. But its not magic.. I notice clear "slowdowns" the bigger the scope gets. They are not actually able to, in any way, subdivide implementations more efficiently than humans.
