I have thought they. should bring back the pro case but designed for stripped-down studio motherboards with built in ultrafast networking so that you can have an AI cluster working as a turnkey system in a single box

I have been predicting an M* Extreme for years. Apple’s new emphasis on AI (SI?) and the rumored return of server Macs makes this seem like an idea whose time has come.

Why are the prices in the USA so much higher?

Also: when we last spoke you were talking about energy storage solutions. How has that progressed recently?

Re:David Lynch has died on Thursday January 16, 2025 @06:15PM (#42732165)
He had to retire due to emphysema.

The work of his Foundation continues (as though anyone here takes it seriously).

Re:David Lynch has died on Thursday January 16, 2025 @05:51PM (#42731914)
For David Lynch, his work with his foundation was the most important thing he did.

He knew he was about to die. He sent this to his Foundation's fundraiser last year:

His last words were: ______

* May everyone be happy.

May everyone be free of disease.

May auspiciousness be seen everywhere.

May suffering belong to no-one.

Peace.

HIs final video was sent to his foundation's fundraiser last year because he couldn't attend:

These were the very last words he spoke:

______

May everyone be happy.

May suffering belong to no-one.

Peace.

Lynch said explicitly that it was best understood as a movie in 25 parts, if I recall correctly.

His most mainstream work is The Elephant Man, commissioned by Mel Brooks.

For Lynch his most important work was promoting his foundation

Here's a nationally televised discussion he had with the President of Ukraine about teaching 100,000 veterans to meditate:

Re:Dan Lynch Has Died (SRI, Arpanet, Internet) on Monday April 01, 2024 @05:47PM (#39899774)
Just about every project is looking at things from a material perspective.

The "spiritual" perspective has legs with respect to life-extension, as well, though there are at least two distinct scientific definitions of spirituality, one based on mindfulness and one based on its exact opposite, mind-wandering resting.

Both strategies (based on distinctly different meditation practices) have research suggesting that lifespan can be extended by their approach.

e.g.

For mindfulness:

Molecules of Silence: Effects of Meditation on Gene Expression and Epigenetics https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10....

vs

For the "other white meat":

Transcriptomics of Long-Term Meditation Practice: Evidence for Prevention or Reversal of Stress Effects Harmful to Health https://www.mdpi.com/1648-9144/57/3/218

See also:

On the Neurobiology of Meditation: Comparison of Three Organizing Strategies to Investigate Brain Patterns during Meditation Practice https://www.mdpi.com/1648-9144/56/12/712

For how distinctly different types of meditation have different effects on nervous system and body.

A hint: the words used to teach meditation can lead to radically different measurable physiological outcomes depending on the context in which those words are spoken and the persistence of those effects is also very dependent on the context in which instructions are given, often leading to exactly the opposite effect on certain physiological measures:

Compare Reduced functional connectivity between cortical sources in five meditation traditions detected with lagged coherence using EEG tomography https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S10538...

with figure 3 of Enhanced EEG alpha time-domain phase synchrony during Transcendental Meditation: Implications for cortical integration theory

https://www.brainresearchinstitute.org/research/totalbrain/T...

https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S01651684050021...

You can't get more distinct than "reduced" vs 100% coherence across all leads simultaneously.

And thereby hangs the tale for explaining how and why different mental practices have different long-term, persistent changes in brain activity in favor of longevity: reduced EEG coherence => reduced resting; 100% implies that the brain is only resting; the longer you practice some forms of meditation, the less restful the brain becomes.

Always mindful vs always resting or moving back into resting mode asap given the chance.

Re:Apple’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors on Tuesday October 19, 2021 @02:05PM (#28921340)
The M1 Pro & Max CPUs are approaching dedicated Laptop GPU levels, so Minis will be a reasonable low/mid-end game machine, comparable to the best PC gaming laptops.

The M* Mac Pros will start out with built-in graphics starting at the M1 Max level and going 4 or perhaps 8x higher, still using integrated graphics.

The fact that Apple now supports $5K dedicated graphics cards on the pro series suggests that the pro M* Macs will be able to use any graphics card (that supports Metal) that you can buy.

The fact that Apple's store was crashing continually after the new laptops were announced suggests that the market for Mac games is going to grow a lot faster than anyone thinks...

How much per 8K x 10 bit color, video frame?

Roughly 190GB per minute without sound.

Trying to do special effects on more than a few seconds of 8K video would overwhelm a 64GB system, I suspect.

At least they're not advocating AZT...

Hmmmm, Mr. President? I have this new experimental therapy you might want to try...

Re:Smalltalk-72 Instruction Manual (1976) [pdf] on Monday September 23, 2019 @01:36PM (#21051277)
Simply use the squeak VM as your starting point.

If there is a C compiler and sufficient memory to hold the image, all of squeak can be ported to a new processor in a few week.

Alan Kay's original Smalltalk team did that with the MIckey Mouse PDA when they were working at Disney — they knew who they would be working for next and so named the opensource Smalltalk-80 project at Apple "Squeak" in honor of that venerable old mouse.

Even after the team left Disney, the name stuck (and now you know the rest of the story).

I mean, Croquet WAS designed to show what a peer-to-peer internet could do.

Re:The Mac Pro Lives on Thursday April 06, 2017 @04:05PM (#14054105)
Apple should go beyond trying to woo back their "power users" and design something to impress non-Mac users so that they’ll want to buy the new Mac Pro just so they can run Windows or Linux.
