Re:AWS IPv4 Estate Now Worth $4.5B on Monday September 18, 2023 @06:24AM (#37554350)
No need to use Shodan. AWS already publishes the IPv4 address it owns in JSON from a well-known endpoint [0].

This reply is from a major Linux kernel developer.

Never used them myself but lots of HN commenters think highly of the VPN services offered by Mullvad [0]. In fact, right now, Mullvad is currently on the HN frontpage [1], from a blog post by Tailscale.

I think parent is referring to the habit of technically inclined folks of using "trivially" similar to words like "simply" and "just" [0][1] in a way that assumes too much about what the reader already knows.

Is being in Europe a strict requirement or candidates within CET +/- 2h but outside Europe are welcome to apply?

Perhaps your IP is on some kind of blacklist (due to past activities of the previously assigned owner of that IP)?

Might be worth investigating.

Heaven Banning is hypothetical, it's not real. At least not yet.

If you look closer at the date in the screen shot of a NYT article in your link, you'll see that the date was deliberately chosen to be in the future (i.e. August 8, 2024).

Would be nice if you could ask the DDG team to cite the links you provided as footnotes to your claim "DuckDuckGo owns the #2 position in mobile market share in the US, and 18 other markets ..." in TFA.

Lots of female users use Pinterest for organizing pins for a wedding. Essentially, they are great as a wedding checklist planner.

> But they aren’t more successful through the blog platform, instead by providing website foundation most companies use to create company websites, e-commerce websites and, a few of them, blogs.

The blog platform provided the very foundation for their success because once people found out how easy it was, relative to the competition[0], to stand up an online presence using WordPress, you could "convert" the blog into an e-commerce website or a CMS or anything you can think of that needs to spit out HTML/CSS/JS, via the use of free/paid WordPress plugins.

[0] WordPress' competition included a wide variety of product categories apart from Movable Type, which used to be the dominant open source blogging platform. From dedicated CMS products like Joomla or Drupal or Plone, to dedicated e-commerce products like OsCommerce. WordPress fit nicely in the middle of these product categories due to its vibrant plugin community and focus on ease of use (at the cost of security), which is part of why it became popular.

Which british banks allow remotely opening a business bank account without visiting the UK?

Re:How to Write in Plain English on Tuesday August 25, 2020 @09:57AM (#24271393)
> So, the solution is to dumb everything down to the least common denominator?

Essentially, yes.

Using words most people are familiar with will afford a lot of people nearly instantaneous cognition [0] of the information you are trying to convey with your writing.

This applies to both ends of the reading spectrum: highly educated people who do a lot of reading than most; and poorly educated people who probably had to drop out of school to make ends meet.

Re:How to Write in Plain English on Tuesday August 25, 2020 @09:36AM (#24271160)
> This makes total sense to me. Simple language makes room for complex ideas.

My takeaway is slightly different: simple words (familiar) are easier to digest than big words (unfamiliar) because familiar words will be parsed very quickly for most people than unfamiliar words.

I prefer to use the categorization of “familiar” vs “unfamiliar” because the categorization of a word as “big” or “simple” depends largely on the reading ability of the person making the assessment.

The COVID-19 situation will probably persist for a while so why not enable billing for as many territories as possible?

I haven’t used them but I think a service like Paddle might be a decent compromise for handling billing in countries not yet supported by Stripe.

You can still buy Kindle books on iOS using Mobile Safari so there is that.

It is indeed for humans. After all, the whole purpose of SEO is to show up on the 1st or 2nd SRP for web searches conducted by humans.

Re:YC Startup School: Build Sprint and Equity-Free Grants on Friday August 14, 2020 @12:08PM (#24159731)
I agree somewhat but there are still differences between the 2 workouts. I guess it boils down to the different muscle types that are recruited for each workout: slow-twitch muscles for jogging versus fast-twitch muscles for weightlifting.

Linear progress is easy to track with runs when you push yourself hard enough as you say, but not so much with weights because it comes with it’s own tending. For instance, to really see results rapidly, your diet has to change such that you are getting certain amounts of protein and other nutrients to build muscle mass.

I have tried to copy the discipline I’ve inculcated from running regularly for weightlifting, but I’m not able to sustain it because in addition to it using up fast-twitch muscles, it also comes with a change in dietary habits that go with that kind of workout.

Thanks for the tips!

God willing, I’ll try out the same-time same-days tip this weekend and see if I can sustain it for a month. If I can’t make it work, I’ll trial the gym membership tip.

Thanks!

IMHO, YC tends to launch these kinds of programs around summer.

The first iteration of this was launched in July 2015 and it was called the YC Fellowship. Participation was accomplished remotely via video chat and grant money was $12000.
