Re:MacBook Air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason on Monday August 15, 2022 @06:39PM (#32476423)
My friends iPhone got replaced 3 times, every single time the same fault. Something to do with audio interface going missing and mic not working.

His next phone was an Android.

I remember looking it up and there were rumours that Apple had initially acknowledged this fault and replaced them with no questions asked but then withdrawn the memo.

Convert to epub and use text to speech on your e-book reader.

Not the best, but you didn't ask for the best :)

Re:The Decommoditization of Protocols (1998) on Sunday August 14, 2022 @04:59PM (#32462884)
In the spirit of the Halloween documents, Microsoft implemented and extended the Kerberos protocol.

Extended it just a tiny bit enough to be incompatible with everyone else. After getting bad PR in the media, they reluctantly agreed to publish their changes. And guess what?

... in order to get it, you have to run a Windows .exe file which forces you agree to a click-through license agreement where you agree to treat it as a trade secret, before it will give you the .pdf file

See https://slashdot.org/story/00/05/02/158204/kerberos-pacs-and...

On the topic of flash cards, the Leitner system is pretty awesome.

Namecheap or Google domains.
I was once working with a guy that was hell bent on microservices.

When our banking application became incompatible with logging, due to his microservice design, he really argued, fought and sulked that logging wasn't important and we didn't need it.

Re:FedEx to close data centers, retire mainframes on Tuesday July 05, 2022 @07:47AM (#31987041)
Wow, this both a fantastic joke and could be used as a school book example of the importance of context.

Given of course that everyone would have watched Father Ted. But the world would be a better place if everyone did.

This is brilliant, well done! Is it possible to build the app as a (Linux) desktop client?

Also, you might want to look at this bug as it might be affecting your cash flow: https://github.com/GitJournal/GitJournal/issues/612

This is a totally out of context article.

This is not helpful, this is simply Besserwisser nonsense.

Re:Please Stop Using Grey Text on Wednesday May 18, 2022 @09:47AM (#31422710)

Yes it does.

> ... but it is equally important that things aren't too bright. You should avoid using extremes like #000000 and #ffffff ...

No, you shouldn't avoid them. Users are fully capable of adjusting the brightness and contrast of their monitors.

I believe you. I just don't think your personal experience is relevant.

Re:Show HN: Kestra - Open-Source Airflow Alternative on Thursday March 24, 2022 @01:25PM (#30792878)
Cool. But please fix that light gray text on white background in the demo (or make it even paler for more avant-garde :)

Re:Vuescan – Software support for 6500 abandoned scanners on Thursday March 24, 2022 @05:46AM (#30787798)
Nice project.

After I had to throw away a perfectly fine and good scanner because it didn't have Windows 7 drivers (let alone Linux), I now only buy hardware that's properly supported on Linux.

Re:MonoLisa – A font designed for developers on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @03:50AM (#30344167)
I kind of agree with you, but I see them authors as avant-garde. Let them be and perhaps something new or an improvement will come out of it for the rest of us.
Re:Ask HN: I'm hesitant to helping colleagues, why? on Sunday February 06, 2022 @02:32PM (#30236066)
You're the one mentioning men.

Those are real issues, made particularly worse due to covid.

They also make it to the front page so they ought to resonate with the crowd.

Re:What's in a good error message? on Sunday February 06, 2022 @02:05PM (#30235782)
Printing out an exception stacktrace is generally awful in a non development context.

But hiding them and printing out "failed to run" is even worse.

I've seen people do that to have a "neat output".

Don't be that person.

I speak for me, myself and I. That's three votes buddy.
Brilliant idea!

That logo however is the most repulsive piece of artwork I've seen in a long time.

(I am sorry for being blunt)

Re:Show HN: What do you think of my new social app? on Thursday February 03, 2022 @10:26AM (#30193603)
For the record, I'm not going to install an desktop app either to use a web service :)
Re:Web3 is not going to change the world on Thursday February 03, 2022 @10:24AM (#30193568)
You can say two things about a piece of technology.

"It's going to change the world". Yeah right. It's written by a marketing dept. to generate hype.

"It's not going to change the world". Now, who writes that and why? There's definitely something interesting about this tech.

Re:Show HN: I've built a tool for musicians using modular gear on Thursday February 03, 2022 @10:16AM (#30193478)
>its just that

It's not just that. OP's title is "I've built a tool for musicians using mod..."

1. The title is highly inaccurate. It's not a tool for musicians, it's for a specific subset of musicians (like you say).

2. The OP got a front page listing on HN. He missed a golden opportunity explaining things. He probably got a lot of musician visitors that found it interesting, but just got confused and left.

Re:Show HN: What do you think of my new social app? on Wednesday February 02, 2022 @06:35AM (#30176224)
Interesting. Will have a look when I don't need to install an app to use it.
