Re:Off the Grid, but Still Online on Monday October 12, 2015 @03:57PM (#10376649)
This might have been a good article had it not been for the pretentious, holier-than-thou introduction. Apparently enjoying the fruits of a modern life make you a mindless drone compared to the "contemporary fine artist" who lives on a boat or someone living in a forest re-inventing the wheel for every modern necessity.
Re:The Hardest chess problem in the world? on Friday September 18, 2015 @03:02PM (#10241353)
Actually, wouldn't it be that the black King would just capture the Queen?
The question was actually about the portrayal of US motives during WW2.
Should we start banning repos with "master" and "slave" too?
Re:Norse Attack Map on Wednesday July 08, 2015 @06:00PM (#9854886)
I don't know much about network security. Is there a difference between the kind of attacks that would be caught by honeypots vs targeted attacks? Do these statistics depend heavily on how they setup their honeypots, which I assume is limited by the company's logistics.
Re:What's Really Warming the World? on Wednesday June 24, 2015 @04:32PM (#9774283)
Is this increase in CO2 a significant amount on the scale of Earth's history? How much of it was caused by humans vs natural cycles? A cursory search informed me C02 levels and average temperature was much higher during the dinosaur ages[0], what was the cause then? Note I'm playing devil's advocate here and I haven't studied climate much, but my point is the graphic wouldn't persuade someone who is already biased against human-driven climate change, and only encourages equally primitive arguments from their side.

Re:What's Really Warming the World? on Wednesday June 24, 2015 @02:15PM (#9773419)
This graphic really just plays into the hands of climate change deniers. No labelled axis, a timeline of only 100 years (you could also argue the dinosaurs caused global warming), and the quite proud declaration at the end the argument is really "no contest" under the assumption that correlation == causation. I could also make a graph that shows the increase in global temperature correlating with the rise in the Latino population, could I then declare it a "no contest"?
Re:What Is Code? on Thursday June 11, 2015 @08:30PM (#9703301)
Anyone know what happens when you allow bloomberg.com to use your camera when you finish reading the article?
I also believe hackTime() was added to the DateTime() API in Java 12, which wasn't released until 2011.
I can only see the top 3 boxes in the results. Opened the iframe in a new window (http://www.bbc.com/earth/bespoke/your-life/), which suggests there's more, but still not loading.
Re:Tea with strangers on Saturday April 18, 2015 @09:20PM (#9401700)
Great concept, my main grip with meeting people on say a site like Meetup is that every event has like 100 attendees and smaller ones are too niche when all I really want is to have a conversation with a few people.
Re:Stop Using LinkedIn on Friday February 13, 2015 @04:09PM (#9047208)
The default setting is that when you view someone's profile, it tells them who you are. I turned this off, as I would love to be able to browse without notifying every profile I go to.

Yes, Delaware is a very common place to incorporate businesses. Even Google is technically a Delaware corporation[1]

Re:John Carmack on Inlined Code on Friday September 26, 2014 @09:48PM (#8375770)
> "...immediately realize that which will make it more difficult to modify these functions". Please clarify what you mean here.

I absolutely would prefer a method to look like:

def main():

  SetUp()

  try:

    DoStuff()

  except:

    HandleErrors()
then a thousand-line god function. It encourages modularity, reduced state and scope (please ignore my example above which implies a lot of shared state:)), and every method should be well-named and do a single thing well. Maybe for super-sensitive realtime systems, this might cause a few necessary checks that we could ignore, but we are talking about readability here.

Having to navigate between different methods is honestly a really lame excuse for sticking everything in one method. That's what IDE's, documentation, and good method names are for.

Re:Ask HN: Hackers who cook on Wednesday September 24, 2014 @03:48AM (#8360321)
1. It's cheaper and my cooking tastes better and is more sustainable healthwise compared to buying a dinner for equivalent cost. I didn't actually start enjoying cooking however until I started living in the city and I had a cool Japanese supermarket within walking distance. I actually enjoy grocery shopping, something I hated before, and since it's close, I don't have to think too much or plan ahead when shopping.

2. Do you plan ahead? Like a weekly meal plan? No, for above reasons.

3. What kind of things do you cook usually? East Asian cuisine, usually rice + some marinated meat + some vegatables.

4. Do you follow any diet? Atkins, Slow Carb etc. no

5. Do you have any life hacks, tips to be more productive as a cook? Live near a grocery store, buy a cookbook of some particular cuisine, this way you only have to buy a few core ingredients and you'll be able to make a whole new host of dishes.

Is there a difference between nationalism and the fact that Italy does in fact has almost twice as high of a corruption index as Germany or that Spain has half the GDP?

Huh? I'd say the exact opposite. Nothing more boring than walking around suburbia.

Re:Free static page hosting on Google App Engine in minutes on Monday February 17, 2014 @07:07PM (#7255400)
I thought about adding an edit in there to clarify you could do that, but I think the points remain that in the end, you still end up with www. in the URL bar.
Re:Free static page hosting on Google App Engine in minutes on Monday February 17, 2014 @03:37PM (#7254343)
Something like this?

handlers:

- url: /.*

  mime_type: text/html

  static_files: static/index.html

  upload: static/index.html
Anything you don't want to go to index.html you can just put before that handler since it processes the app.yaml from top to bottom and stops at the first match.

I host my personal website GAE. One thing to be aware of is when moving to a personal domain, you need to map to a subdomain so you can't use a naked domain[1] (e.g. 'http://github.com'). You have to map to something like 'www.'

Re:The Best To-Do List: A Private Gist on Thursday January 02, 2014 @01:51PM (#7001344)
All the manual creation of checkboxes, deletion, and moving of tasks to me makes Gist far from "The Best" to-do list. Personally, I find the lighweight Google Tasks just fine, especially since there are many excellent mobile apps that sync with it and builtin support for multiple lists. I wish the URL for it was a bit more memorable though (https://mail.google.com/tasks/canvas?pli=1). The only thing missing is date completed, which I personally don't find very useful, but a calendar would probably be better if you want to keep track of that.

Edit: Nevermind, it does save date completed.

Yeah, if I was writing the essay there definitely would be many more pauses between each sentence.
Re:Poll: How often do you exercise? on Monday December 30, 2013 @06:24PM (#6987809)
The downvotes are because you are insulting a part of many peoples lives which you pretty much claim to know very little about. For one, I want bother linking because any simple search will yield the results, exercise is, not surprisingly, the root of many physical and mental health benefits. I've read numerous stories here on HN showing how it can help lift people out of depression, and exercise is important to many professions and hobbies.

But aside from the direct benefits, does marketing show healthy and fit people? Yes it does, but I'd go out on a limb and say that even without that, people of the opposite sex will find healthy physical features attractive, so you're always going to have people do it for that reason as well. It's not the most noble motive (however you define that), but you shouldn't ignore the other very honest reasons for exercise just because you hate the stereotypical gym jock.

Re:Poll: How often do you exercise? on Monday December 30, 2013 @01:18PM (#6985924)
So in other words you have high metabolism. A lot of other people do not, so it's just a bit arrogant to say exercise is 'a fad' just because of your anecdotal experience.
Re:Two million Facebook, Gmail and Twitter passwords stolen on Wednesday December 04, 2013 @03:14PM (#6849809)
> Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter told CNNMoney they have notified and reset passwords for compromised users.

> The hackers set up the keylogging software to rout information through a proxy server, so it's impossible to track down which computers are infected.

Have I missed something or are these statements contradictory?

I thought that was a fair question which crossed my mind as well. Do your tweets belong to Twitter (e.g. can they delete/modify your content once it's on their servers)? If you post a work on a public site, without explicit copyright, are you granted an implicit copyright? If I post a jsfiddle, are people allowed to use that in their code? I don't think the questions are that obvious, at least for me with zero background in copyright law.

Re:The craziest date ever on Friday November 15, 2013 @01:29PM (#6741160)
The credit card did it for me. I think there's a difference between minimalist and just not packing things because you have the money to just buy whatever you need later. Not to mention the ability to return home to your job as a professor.
