Re:Ask HN: Dvorak or Dvorak-Qwerty? Shortcuts not useful anymore?
on Saturday February 02, 2013 @03:02AM (#5155515)
You might want to look into Colemak, which keeps some shortcut keys in place, is easier to learn than Dvorak and has similar speed/ergonomic advantages. Of course some shortcuts like vi's hjkl break but it keeps zxcv in place.

Same with MSN Messenger but they fixed that in the latest version.
Re:Ask HN: What were you doing when 9/11 happened?
on Saturday September 11, 2010 @07:53PM (#1682654)
I guess it's just my bias/skepticism because against flashbulb memories but this sums up my position: "Flashbulb memories are not special in their accuracy, as previously claimed, but only in their perceived accuracy."
Re:Ask HN: What were you doing when 9/11 happened?
on Saturday September 11, 2010 @04:52PM (#1682330)
I'm kind of skeptical to these type of memories, called flashbulb memories, since most of the time subjects give vivid details and are confident when in fact it's just made up details they believed they experienced. So AFAIK I don't remember anything particular about 9/11.
Re:Ask HN: What do you perceive as worth spending money on?
on Friday September 10, 2010 @10:18AM (#1678897)
Concerts/shows. I rarely buy music but I still want to support the artists I like and its a great experience. I tend not to go to shows that only sell via Ticketmaster or are exorbitantly priced.

I find it interesting but not to the extent its permeated conversation outside of psychology. I remember cognitive dissonance had a similar standing in pop psychology a while back.

If you enable browser.ctrlTab.previews in Firefox's about:config panel you can get MRU tab-switching with thumbnail previews.
Re:Silk Icons: A Comprehensive Open Source Icon Set

I think that's pretty misleading comparing Silk to Comic Sans. A more suitable comparison would be to something like Helvetica or Times New Roman. Ubiquitous and overused but still a dependable choice.

It's doubly funny when you look at the difference between "use knowledge to make an age-reversing potion" which follows with "use knowledge to build flux capacitor"

Re:Ask HN: Do you recommend Open Office?
on Thursday October 29, 2009 @02:39AM (#909604)
I've used Open Office in the past and advocated it to my friends but I hypocritically use Office.
The ribbon for all it's criticism seems to be highly functional, aesthetically pleasing and usable (using pictorial representations that aren't 16x16).
There's a "Save as XPS/PDF" plugin for Office as well, no one has mentioned which works fine.
I only use LaTeX for technical documents with a lot of math, but the Office equation editor does the job nicely with a few quirks here and there though.
My only qualm is the lack of ligatures and kerning in Office, which will hopefully be added in '10.

I must be uninformed about something but why is Pirate Bay getting all the flack from the DMCA; having their servers raided, going to court, this. Aren't there a dozen other torrent indexers to persecute?
Re:Boy Lifts Book; Librarian Changes Boy's Life

Zero-tolerance, in schools anyway, is zero-thought for the administration and principles, having to deal with the grey cases, setting exceptions when they're education administrators not lawyers.
I doubt a student who did a similar action (stealing and returning a library book) would perceive themselves as morally wrong even with a zero-tolerance policy in place on 'stealing'.
Re:How Races and Religions Match in Online Dating

Sorry are you serious? Why would a Hindu that is pro-arranged marriage be on a dating website? Arranged marriages were a severe form of keeping the caste system in tact but that's not applicable now.
But then again your type of logic can probably explain why Islamic people aren't liked since everyone is anti-terrorism.

Men's Health did a feature a while back on a Western runner who attempted to play their games (a tag-like game) which consisted of running for a whole day and contrasted this with their lifestyle and diet which consisted of partying and corn mash. Apparently they have near immortality, low heart risk etc. http://www.menshealth.com/cda/article.do?conitem=3b4b1ca01e9... A really interesting read.
And NYMag did a feature on shoe tech (comparing Masai, Nike Free, Vivo, Vibram) before the Ferris hype: http://nymag.com/health/features/46213/index1.html, much more in-depth than the Wired article.

I think it's nothing more than an updated gif. Google Notebook was out of beta for a few years before they pulled the plug. Albeit the circumstances were different but Google has the power to uproot any of their products as they see fit without any real "commitment."

So true; he has 27 diverse countries to flagrantly cherry pick from, however when I read "But talk is cheap, and these findings may indicate desire as much as reality" I was amazed for a second thinking he was going to analyze his techniques and sources for biases but alas, no such evaluation ensued. Fainly reminds me of Gladwellian journalism.
