I'm nowhere near executive compensation and I would just tap my savings for 2 months.

I think you'd have to limit their usage of previously acquired funds. Once you're rich, you can ride out a 2 month storm like it's nothing.

Nobody else ships like them in the US.

Getting a product to me from California is 500 more land miles than someone in Rome ordering from Moscow.

You're already 10 years in. Completely different.

I reached out to you about a week ago at the given email and ended up with radio silence followed by a standard template rejection today.

Just bringing this to your attention, if you aren't the one screening online resumes.

Sounds like you want to start an insurance company or a VC firm.

All of those companies turn a huge profit.
> AirBNB has greatly increased the supply of housing in each city, thus causing price drops and forcing hotels to drop their prices in order to remain competitive.

That's 2-3 major claims that I just can't believe at face value. I'd like to, but you'll have to convince me.

People are converting rental properties to AirBnBs, which actually could mean less supply of rental properties and the same amount of people looking for them.

Is AirBnB leading to development of new housing to offset this? Maybe. idk

So is speaking fluent English (even as a native speaker). The thing is that both are so common that they aren't really skills in the US market.

Knowing how to drive is nearly ubiquitous in the US in the 18+ year old population.

So, let's say the metric is "additional training required after age 18".

Driving: likely none. McDonalds: likely a little!

The services are there. Cheap and slow or expensive and fast.

Right now you're spoiled with cheap and fast, which will change eventually; I'd recommend planning for this.

>Sure I want to support those who work for a company that respect them

Do you really? Clearly not to the tune of an additional $250 for daily private car service or additional commute time on the buses.

To be even more fair, a huge factor in them being underpaid is that the average driver will have a hard time factoring in depreciation, which hits you on a delay.

Why is this aside in the article?

It's a separate point that isn't going to get her much sympathy in many circles, because that pay gap could be less real than you think.

18% less could be a result of negotiating skills or any other confounding factor. How has she quantified her qualifications vs all other male employees?

No need to add this unsubstantiated drivel to an otherwise potentially useful insight.

Re:80,000 Hours career plan worksheet on Tuesday January 17, 2017 @02:16AM (#13415707)
This is not about simply finding work. It's about finding the work you want in the long run, which is different.
You assume that $1 above poverty line is "middle".

I certainly don't.

That feel when you confuse China and Japan.
His point wasn't that we don't import. It's that if we were to somehow have everyone say "we aren't selling food to the US", we wouldn't be totally screwed.
Re:Beware of Developers Who Do Negative Work on Sunday December 18, 2016 @10:32PM (#13209354)
Only if you assume it actually works, which is the most blatantly circular logic in this thread.

This guy could have said "I feel like a daily prayer in the server room would filter bad devs" and it would be just as proven as his feeling about whiteboarding.

No way you're top 1% when normalized to location.
Medicare is fine, some social security facets are fine, such as disability.

Social security as a general retirement plan? Shitty program.

What it should be AT MOST: mandated investment in a retirement account that you can't touch. Although I would prefer to not even have policy here at all. This is only necessary because people are by and large shit with money and will not save without being forced to.

What is is: take money from workers and transfer it directly. It's not even invested to generate additional wealth.

It's hard for me to understand how my ancestors, alive since the beginning of time, reproduced so much that not every person in the family line has a house.

Could you imagine working your whole life and end up with not even a shelter to pass on to the person "replacing" you?

I never plan to have a kid, but if I did I would feel obligated to give them a head start in this shit life. They wouldn't be fucking renting or taking out loans that's for sure.

Content having some relation to politics isn't blanket banned.
Re:It Takes 6 Days to Change 1 Line of Code (2015) on Tuesday December 06, 2016 @09:38PM (#13120055)
Right. For every startup that skips process and gets lucky there is a pile that rolled snake eyes and died.

Big companies aren't taking the chance.

UChicago?

Although I know many places use this project.

"easy"

Proceeds to introduce multiple points of failure.

Re:It Was Never About Ops on Tuesday November 29, 2016 @09:04PM (#13067843)
I suppose the natural question to ask here is if one thinks it is actually possible to be truly "on call" at multiple places simultaneously.

Is the extent of your agreement service within a day or something shorter/longer?

Re:Let's Colonize Titan on Sunday November 27, 2016 @09:44PM (#13053052)
My bet is that we call gg right here on Earth. We're simply not good enough.
Re:Let's Colonize Titan on Sunday November 27, 2016 @09:41PM (#13053035)
He's not saying the public transit solutions are implemented yet. For that to happen, people would need to re-allocate their funds from buying expensive private cars to a new public transit system.
Re:Let's Colonize Titan on Sunday November 27, 2016 @09:20PM (#13052974)
While I love mopeds and bought a 1980 vespa grande in college, I would not advise this.

As the song goes, "mopeds are always broke, but they easy to fix".

A moped WILL break down on you and be underpowered. My grande with a 70cc kit, performance variator and multiple breakdowns tops out around 41mph.

If you are not interested in repairing bikes or paying for their repair (if even possible in your city), avoid mopeds.

I'd recommend a 125cc+ scooter though. Reliability, fuel efficiency, and a bit more power which can increase safety. They also have more storage.

Don't forget to add in the fixed cost of gear!

Re:Let's Colonize Titan on Sunday November 27, 2016 @09:01PM (#13052901)
I think he means in the long run. His claim is that eventually you have a large group of average intelligence humans on our new planet and we decided to pursue colonization tech instead of sustainable energy and environment tech.

Of course, my bet is that we will reach the point where we can sustain a planet before we run out of planets (assuming we colonize a planet).

My actual bet is that it's gg for humanity.

Re:How Fake News Goes Viral: A Case Study on Sunday November 20, 2016 @09:49PM (#13002732)
Why make this an attack specifically against Americans?

Plenty of dumb people everywhere. Fake news, state news, no news, they'll eat it up.

I've basically given up on trying to show anyone any sort of truth. A third of my life is over and we're not even to the point where 10/10 people could tell you which way is up without consulting some blog or CNN.

I just gotta carve the best life I can, regardless of any mob rule.

Re:Airbnb expands to experiences on Thursday November 17, 2016 @10:06PM (#12983981)
Right. The original idea is now trashed. Airbnb doesn't care if someone is operating a 20 bunk bed dorm room that they don't actually live in, as long as they get a cut.

It couldn't get further from living like a local; it's just an AirBnHostel.
