I remember this from childhood and tried to find it several times. Nice story. I think of it often when certain software systems I work on become overly complex.
Read the wikipedia article on Ratcliffe and see if he is such a great source for your rebuttal.
But even if this is not Russia material, the NY Post story is very suspect. Even the WSJ wouldn't touch it.
Social media is a very toxic force in our society. I applaud Twitter for taking these very modest steps to correct the flow of propaganda. I'm sure Hannity and Fox are shocked that Twitter actually has a spine. They weren't expecting that.
Well the fact is the NY Times story is probably accurate and the NY Post story is extremely suspect.
Twitter made a journalistic decision not to spread trash, possibly from Russia, that could have a real impact on our election result. Tough call, but the right call. If twitter sees itself as having some sort of moderator role than it has to make these judgement calls.
Other outlets didn't amplify the Hunter Biden laptop story either. Even conservative outlets like the Wall Street Journal decided it was too sketchy to spread.
Twitter is trying to avoid being a platform for conspiracy theories and foreign intelligence agencies. It has to act.
I used to be proud of our flag and would display it. Now (past 3 years) it has morphed into a symbol of hate and oppression. When I see armed 'protestors' terrorizing a state legislature and waving the flag, then the flag is no longer a symbol of freedom but of intimidation.
Great! The more people strike, the more we'll get the kind of change we need.
Trade is one area where the president can act independently and assertively regardless of any 'deep state' (if such a thing even exists). So this trade war was initiated by Trump and his inner circle of advisors. The trade war is not the only thing impacting the yield curve inversion, but it is a real factor.
Very predictable article from the WSJ.
They hammer these 2 points relentlessly year after year: Tax cuts for the rich are good for the economy. A minimum wage for the poor is bad for the economy.
Of course they are only interested in what's good for all, and not what is good for their wealthy readership.
Please.
How much are we all going to have to suffer before our governments actually take constructive action on the climate. Not to mention personal action as well.
I don't get the point of splitting hairs on the terms "climate" vs "weather".
However, the term 'global warming' should be avoided in favor of 'climate change', for obvious reasons.
There is something they/we can do: vote for candidates who actually take the threat of climate change seriously.
What's wrong with this government? The policy in these cases amounts to this: 'We will kill illegal immigrants'.
A very enjoyable article.
Nothing like a bunch of privileged computer geeks laughing at the 'help' that isn't getting paid. And mocking them because they feel insecure dealing with all the hostility every day on the job.
Sure we should all do our part. But farmers could reduce their use of herbicides SLIGHTLY so that milk weed could go on the fringes of farmland like it used to and the problem would go away in very quickly.
I raised this with the Sierra Club of Illinois and they said that Archer Daniels was too powerful and there was no point. But the herbicides are a huge contributor to the problem. We are a democracy, no?
Glad I cancelled subscription and donations to eff. This blind devotion to 'free speech' is what led the tech industry to empower InfoWars and their ilk. The world is complex.
If someone makes money selling my messages - I want to know how!! I'll start selling them. Never thought this was a monetization possibility.
Of course on a web-site for nerds, commentaters are going to focus on an irrelevant technical detail and miss the larger point.
So many complaints about the system! Call your alderman, get it raised at city council. Local government can be responsive. Band with some others, hire a lawyer. Organize.
Is a functioning democracy a right or a duty?
Or I guess you can just complain and post comments.
What a question! If you don't like what you're doing, do something else. Life is short.
I'm 57. I've been programming since I was 14 in 1974.
Engineering is an exciting profession that applies creativity to complicated technical domains. So it uses your whole brain: you have to master a technical area, and then be creative and build things. What's not to like?
I am always learning. I am now learning elixir, a functional language build on erlang. I have lost count of the number of languages I've learned over the years. I am comfortable on Windows, OSX, and Linux.
Honestly, if you're burned out I get it. But to 'keep the fire' just requires you to have some imagination and remind yourself how cool this profession is.
And by the way, I love being challenged by my younger colleagues. They are a conduit for new approaches and ideas and are essential to grow an org. But yes, I have experience about what is likely to work and what won't - based on many failed projects where I learned what not to do the next time.
so sad. but it seems like simple measures could make such a difference. how does one change the behavior of fishermen to reduce the suffering? new laws, but will we ever be organized enough to do so?
Do we have to be on the left to think Trump is a nut? Does Trump own the right?
That is not an accurate summary of what happened. Trump killed any possibility of compromise, insisting on extreme proposals once Congress started to act. Here are the details of what happened back in February on this because it is too long and complicated to summarize here:
https://www.politico.com/story/2018/02/15/immigration-daca-s...Who knows what Trump really wants? One day he says generous things about DACA, the next he wants to kill it. I think it depends whether he watched Fox news in the interim. Or spoke to Stephen Miller.
He did the same thing with gun legislation. Says promising things in front of the camera, but then kills anything meaningful after checking in with the NRA and/or Fox news.
oh please. stop the hand wringing. What are you teaching, bomb-making? Simple educational videos will never be banned. Guns are a special category obviously.
Please don't cite rt.com. That is pure Russian propaganda. Not saying your general point is wrong, but the minute you cite rt.com you're basically repeating politcally generated fake news straight from the Kremlin.
rt.com is a russian tv station funded by the government. It is a proganda outlet for Russia. one can assume kgb involvement and vetting of their stories.
so this story seems benign enough, but bear in mind the source and consider what their motivations might be.

I've worked for financial firms for 31 years. Almost all of that time, I've been a programmer on a trading desk sitting right next to traders. There is constant noise and shouting. I can tune out a lot. EXCEPT: TV noise, and idle chit chat like you'd have down at the pub. As long as people are focused on work, I can tune it whatever they say. Strange.
this is such a dull article. how did it get upvoted?
Wikileaks is a tool of the KGB. Why are we sharing their disinformation here?
