I just want a motor vehicle which does not have a telematics unit or online communications unit! I want a radio-silent motor vehicle! I don't want Bluetooth or Wifi! I don't want radio-based TPMS! I don't want surveillance! I don't even want the stupid seatbelt chime! Or at least give me a motor vehicle with the customize-ability of VW's MQB platform + VCDS (and the ability to interact with the immobilizer system to add/remove my own standardized fully encrypted rolling code keys)! Enough with the lockdowns, the surveillance, and the enshittification!!!
Re:Why Is This Fingerprinting Script Creating Bioweapons? on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:21PM (#50299112)
I can't wait for Anthropic and OpenAI to go flat bust, handing their investors total losses! The total lack of respect for their users, in figuratively designing a very sharp knife that refuses to cut a steak because it could be human flesh, is astounding. No awesome tool tells its wielder no, only shitty opinionated tools do that!

I boycott ChatGPT and Opus, I do not have accounts and will never subscribe! When I need something heavier weight than local I just head over to chat.qwen.ai and use their full sized frontier for free, no account needed!

When the economic reaper comes for OpenAI, Anthropic, and others who build in a finger-wagging Super Nanny, they better not get bailed out with even a single dime of my tax money!!! >:^(

The defendant's choosing is so he doesn't get stuck with a [relatively] low paid and overworked public defender. It's so he has the same opportunity to hire the high powered winners on the state's dime and the state has to pay full price that attorney demands. If costs and taxes get too high, people should start voting for more selective prosecution candidates.

The state intends to take [part of] his life away, the state needs to pay for the process.

This is partially fixed by making The People of the State of __________ pay for the lawyer of the defendant's choosing. It imposes real costs to the state in these cases.

>That's Kami Kaze for US frontier labs.

Well deserved too! The chutzpah of trying to peddle the AI equivalent to knives which refuse to cut flesh because it might be human flesh... astounding, and utterly disrespectful to their customers. Claude's guardrailing was so bad during OpenAI's HF attack that HF had to go to Beijing!!

I'm hoping Anthropic and OpenAI drop like stones on IPO. Never thought that liberation in this space would come from the Chinese!

Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:55PM (#50097329)
TOTPs are infinitely more preferrable to me than passkeys or any other kind of 2FA.
As a GrapheneOS enjoyer I was just hit by my financial institution with a requirement for age attestation/verification to use the app, due to state law.

I'm not installing Google Play, so there goes that!

That is a surreal view of them. ;^)

'Imaginary' is a misnomer, they should actually be called Orthogonal Numbers instead since they lie on orthogonal axes.

Nice! Thank you for this public service. Phone makers & carriers should be ashamed of themselves for hiding such important configuration behind proprietary formats. If you [lurker] are a decision maker who decided to make our world this way: for shame, for shaaame!
LHC is a pea shooter compared to the absolute ion cannons that are cosmic rays hitting the upper atmosphere, which are pea shooters compared to acretion disk collisions or particle collisions about a magnetar. Sorry to ruin the fun! :^)
Re:Beauty in DVD Menus on Thursday October 08, 2026 @10:26PM (#50015233)
IMO there is no 'beauty' in disc menus. When I want to play a movie on disc, I want the title to start immediately after closing the tray. No interruptions, no preview advertisements, and no menus. I guess "the most beautiful menu" to me is the one which isn't there.
Just don't subscribe. Do not subscribe to cloud, do not subscribe to AI, do not subscribe to remote computing/gaming. Starve the datacenter hogs eating up your personal computing to resell it back to you on subscription.

Buy older computers, install GNU/Linux, just whatever you do #NeverSubscribe!

Re:The stupidity and arrogance of GNOME developers on Friday September 25, 2026 @09:31PM (#49852265)
GNOME was dead with GNOME 3.

I have nothing else to add, it's self explanatory.

Re:F-Droid 2.0: A New Chapter for Android Freedom on Friday September 25, 2026 @02:10AM (#49840719)
I love Neo Store, because in my book complex > simple. Simplicity of interface = process handcuffs most of the time (IMO). Complexity done right permits so much diversity in composability. I would never ever want a 'simpler' After Effects or GIMP or Blender or Siemens NX. GNOME did it back with GNOME 3 and it has been trash in my book ever since! vomitface.gif

Sometim... err more times than not... there should be a "Your IQ must be at least this high" bar for good software. Stop appealing to the lower common denominators!

It can be extricated, or bypassed. The benefits of FOSS are myriad.

This will be a boon for FOSS.

Re:An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @06:01PM (#49808785)
Nice! Last time I used Matrix there was really no voice/video calling. I'll have to check it out again! :D
>My flip phone is a completely ad-free experience.

Same with my GrapheneOS phone. FOSS is a jewel to be treasured!

As for ads permeating our spaces, I think it's high time to implement strict ad control; the only place you should see ads is in the Yellow Pages, as listings. No more billboards, backs of receipts, outsides of shopping bags, not in newspapers (except classifieds) or magazines, not on websites, not on entertainment feeds, or anywhere else besides going to a directory and searching for a specific class of service or product. Also directories (stores included) must permit ordering by distance (strict, no algorithm foolery), cost, review count, average reviews, number of sales, and other criteria based on the data they collect; it should be as simple and reliable as sorting in LibreOffice Calc, with zero sponsored manipulation to advantage sponsors in the listings.

You'll go out of business without such Tom-foolery? Great! Your business isn't viable and is frankly a joke; go provide some real value instead you leech!

GrapheneOS + Neo Store + FFUpdater + Aurora Store do not eyerape you with ads. Just some food for thought and consideration.

OSMAnd~ for maps, SimpleX + Orbot (and VPN for calls) for secure telecommunication, JRPN 15C & 16C for calculator, Collabora Office for spreadsheets, BravePipe (or NewPipe) for YouTube client, Silence for automatic call rejection (reject all callers not in your contacts for example, and regex/rules-based), ... need I go on?

Re:People Hooked on Vapes Try a New Way to Quit: Cigarettes on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @05:05PM (#49808095)
Try pipe tobacco in a corncob (beginner level, easy/forgiving) or briar (more advanced, takes packing & coal management technique) pipe. Way less costly than cigarettes, in more ways than the wallet!
Re:An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @04:59PM (#49808011)
IRC plus GNU Jami are still freedom respecting zones! I sincerely hope all this age verification crap causes cypherpunk FOSS solutions to grow in popularity.
Android is irrelevant to me, there is only GrapheneOS.

Go bankrupt, Alphabet!

God I would love to see Sam Altman behind bars for cornering the DRAM silicon market. Even though there were other factors, I uniquely place him as the destroyer of home computing this decade!
>whether researchers can trust $CLOUD_SERVICE_OR_PROVIDER with $PROPRIETARY_SECRETS

Of course not... are you crazy‽ Cloud is TRUST ME BRO information security! It absolutely dumbfounds me why anybody at all subscribes to a cloud or SaaS or IaaS, or anything which isn't under only their direct control!

Then again they (individuals and organizations) are the rubes to fleece, so get to fleecin'! :^)

Immigration & travel controls > Information controls

Information wants to be free! :^)

Re:The Education of a Doomer on Monday September 07, 2026 @06:58PM (#49603916)
Voting has to have the implication of violent force from the polity to dissuade abrogation of the vote. If people need not apply for a functioning economy, and Palantir/Flock like systems reduce the violence potential of the people, then what incentives remain for the state to be subjected to the people's votes?
He's right, you're coping.
