easiness
Re:WordPad Is Gettings Ads in Windows 10 on Tuesday January 21, 2020 @05:03PM (#22112155)
LTSC can be purchased individually legally. But it is indeed expensive.

Luckily, there are also all those shady eBay “key resellers”. (They are all cracked of course, but they also work, so it’s worth it.)

Re:Switching from Chrome to Firefox on Monday December 30, 2019 @04:50AM (#21912200)
Switching saved passwords (with the built in password managers) between Firefox, Chrome and Safari is a pain.

I remember that in order to get my passwords from Chrome to Firefox on macOS, I needed to install a virtual machine with Windows, and log in to Chrome and Firefox there.

Re:Supreme Court to Hear Google-Oracle Copyright Fight on Saturday November 16, 2019 @02:49AM (#21551543)
I am mostly surprised this is still ongoing... isn’t it going for around 10 years already?
Re:Bill.com Files for $100M IPO on Friday November 15, 2019 @09:51PM (#21550662)
WeWork is not “tech IPO” though.
Re:Oyo's business model is looking a lot like WeWork's on Friday November 15, 2019 @04:27AM (#21543513)
In Vietnam, they vary in quality so much as to make the brand meaningless.

There are good ones and terrible ones.

The business model doesn’t seem to make sense to me either.

Re:The Google Squeeze on Tuesday November 12, 2019 @12:57PM (#21516287)
I’m wishing there was a search engine that was not filled with ads that does not suck.

And don’t give me duckduckgo, that one regularly ranks spam domains and typo domains higher than the real results

Re:The Google Squeeze on Tuesday November 12, 2019 @12:54PM (#21516249)
I won’t cry for TripAdvisor and Expedia, their websites were awful.

Booking Group websites (booking.com and agoda) are still doing great in 2019 as the article states, because they don’t suck

Re:Google Buys Fitbit for $2.1B on Saturday November 02, 2019 @01:36AM (#21426084)
and spamming users with ads left and right, Google style, too
The lesson here is not to sue AT&T. The lesson here is to stop investing in cryptocurrency.
Re:Notarizing Your Mac Software for macOS Catalina on Monday October 07, 2019 @10:20AM (#21181111)
I’m pretty sure you do.
Re:Notarizing Your Mac Software for macOS Catalina on Monday October 07, 2019 @09:32AM (#21180542)
How to notarize a binary if one does not have macOS? I used to have a cross-platform build on Docker for macOS, I wonder how would I do it now.
Isn’t LTSC better as a desktop? It’s just Windows 10 without the user hostile crap.

But I have never run Windows Server

Buy pirated Windows LTSC on ebay (or actual, if you have 260 usd to spare), it solves most of Windows 10 problems
This is true about anything GNUnet related, really.
Re:Run Commands, the 'rc' in '.bashrc' on Monday September 02, 2019 @12:45AM (#20856824)
I found it funny that random decisions from 60s, 70s, 80s still have repercussions on how we use computers today, because backwards compatibility beats cleanliness every time.

Be right back, solving some Windows backslash and CRLF issues.

Isn’t this (2013)?
Re:JavaScript Is Bad on Tuesday August 27, 2019 @07:30AM (#20808416)
We need to separate two things.

One is that JavaScript is bad. It’s true, but strongly typed languages built on top of JS improve it immensely. Most people today use TypeScript, I used to use Flowtype but the history went the other way, oh well. So that part is being fixed.

The other part is the package management, and the ecosystem, and that’s almost independent on JavaScript the language. And well, the situation there sucks so much that I needed to escape to backend world, since I don’t want to deal with broken webpack plugins anymore.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s also broken in python and golang (my current languages), but people at least ADMIT it’s a problem, and in golang folks try to fix the vendor/ mess with modules. (Python... ugh.)

I wish the npm mess was getting better, but while yarn at least solved some sub-problem, the whole thing doesn’t get better. Back to golang I go, I feel happy here.

(Well unless I have to copy paste Apply for the 30th time.)

You would need a special license if you read it to your children and then sell that recording.
BBC seems blocked only on some providers. I can connect to bbc.co.uk now, but bbc.com is DNS blocked.
The freedom here is... weird.

There is much more freedom of speech than in China, or compared to other SEA countries (maybe except for Thailand, but that has a military coup every 2 years in average).

There is no censorship of foreign media, internet is basically free. You can say whatever you want and nobody cares, people complain about party and officials on Facebook constantly.

On the other hand, they keep arresting people for public protests (google “formosa protests vietnam”), for crazy numbers of years (10, 20 years for protesting). And there are rumors censorship of internet is coming - they made a new law just this January that will allow them to censor Facebook or Google unless they host data here and give data about citizens to the government. It is a question how will they proceed; the party is similarly opaque to Chinese party.

All in all though, it’s around better than other countries in region on average or China but worse than Europe, US, or even Taiwan

You can complain about Party, but once you start actually organizing protests, they will come knocking. But since the economy is growing so crazy, people are generally happy.

and of course as a white expat you are put on a pedestal here and a bit untouchable. It’s bad but that’s how it is.

I live in Vietnam, people here say Trump’s Chinese tariffs have built many people’s new houses.
Re:Plastics: What's Recyclable, What Becomes Trash and Why on Thursday August 22, 2019 @12:20AM (#20764600)
oh so it seems my strategy “put everything that has some plastic in it, maybe, who knows, it looks plasticky” to the yellow bins is actually harmful
Re:I feel like im talking to the borg on Thursday August 15, 2019 @09:41AM (#20705086)
The “ambassadors” are so bad it’s embarrassing.

Which leads me to think they are not actually PR professionals (they would actually not talk in such a robotic way), but really low level employees that are paid extra to talk good on social media, and are repeating from some officially sanctioned book of “what you should and shouldn’t say”

they don’t sound like Borg, they sound like McDonald’s cashiers, just doing their assignments

Re:Who Owns Huawei? on Saturday August 10, 2019 @04:19AM (#20660878)
The scary thing about Chinese approach is that it seems actually working.
Re:Slack was down on Monday July 29, 2019 @11:14AM (#20555408)
Mailservers are also down very often.

When a company switches from their own e-mail server to hosted Google Mail, their uptime improves.

Re:OpenBitTorrent – An Open Tracker Project on Sunday July 28, 2019 @09:26PM (#20550822)
What makes this “open” is - I presume - other trackers used to be tied to a forum with a registration, while this is supposedly not tied to a forum or a torrent search website.

However, from what I read some time ago, it’s actually connected to Pirate Bay, and when Pirate Bay used to be down, OpenBitTorrent was also down.

Re:History and Effective Use of Vim on Saturday July 20, 2019 @03:20AM (#20484583)
Just finished reading this book, “Ed Mastery”. I can’t tell if it’s “worth the money” - not sure if learning ed(1) is worth anything- but it’s fun to see the design decisions made way back in the 70s still being present in vim

Nintendo mever advertises Switch as USB-C in any of their marketing though
