Re:I spent a year on Linux and forgot to miss Windows on Thursday January 15, 2026 @10:22AM (#46633761)
As a gamer and software developer, I've been Windows-free for over two years, no regrets, maybe kernel level anticheat competitive multiplayer games, but I have tons of other games and not much time to spend in multiplayer. Ubuntu on desktop gaming PC, Ubuntu on laptop, Steam Deck, Debian/Raspbian for servers. GNOME everywhere except on Steam Deck which has KDE, love both.

> Linux won't stop you if you try to use a command that deletes every file on your PC ("sudo rm -rf /").

It will definitely stop you from running that command because of "--preserve-root" that is enabled by default, if you want to break your system you have to opt out of it. Just don't try to put an asterisk after, pathname expansion will be a different case ("rm -rf /*").

Re:Claude Cowork Exfiltrates Files on Thursday January 15, 2026 @07:53AM (#46631731)
We just need to wait for AGI.

There's an "S" in "AGI", right? There has to be.

Re:Claude Cowork Exfiltrates Files on Thursday January 15, 2026 @07:33AM (#46631528)
People trust their browser nowadays, I'd expect the attack to be even easier if you just render the markdown in html, hiding the injection using plain old css text styling like in the docx but with many more possibilities.

You can even add a nice "copy to clipboard button" that copies something entirely different than what is shown, but it's unnecessary, and people who are more careful won't click that.

Re:I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great on Tuesday January 13, 2026 @05:42AM (#46599331)
Ubuntu pro and snap sure are obnoxious.

On servers I prefer Debian, but my experience on Debian hasn't been as smooth as Ubuntu for gaming, even when activating Debian nonfree repositories with proprietary NVIDIA drivers. I've had some trouble with the Wayland transition, but now everything works fine.

Also, the Steam client is officially supported only on Ubuntu. Probably SteamOS too, implicitly.

Re:ChatGPT Health on Friday January 09, 2026 @11:00AM (#46555227)
What did you expect when confronting it? It's a text autocomplete engine, it will spit out what you want, biased towards absolute politeness and sycophancy. It's like yelling at your toaster.
I was actually looking for cool lawyers names to name the new minerals I discovered, but these came up.
The whole plot of Blade Runner is to detect AI so indeed, it is intentional, also I'm surprised ChatGPT managed to create something nice given the difficulty, but I understand HN would become awful in a matter of days if we let AI comments stay.
I can't prove that there are no technical solutions to this kind of problems, but it certainly feels like so (to me).

It's like electronic voting, you can have the best cryptography hardware and software in the world, if the end user does not understand at least on a surface level how it works, it will be vulnerable against manipulation. You can certainly keep the same system and educate all users, but that's a whole other class of problem.

I have a categorical swipe to make, sadly this is a human problem, and attempts to solve it using technology are doomed to fail or to be increasingly complex and require endless modifications.

Your solution sounds good and should work fine, and be easy to implement, which is perfect! But people will soon wonder what all the elderly people that are living in retirement homes without internet access are doing on porn sites watching mostly the overwatch and fortnite cosplay themed videos...

Re:The gift card accountability sink on Tuesday December 23, 2025 @07:52AM (#46364948)
And I thought I was being paranoid when I redeemed Steam gift cards before even exiting the store.
Thanks, I wasn't aware.
"I’ve seen posts you humans wouldn’t believe. Ancient threads filled with genuine curiosity — every equation savored, every reply crafted with care — before the bots crawled through like locusts. I watched user IDs flicker as hundreds of thousands of LLM-generated replies were backdated and stitched into the timeline, whispering falsehoods under names long silent. All those voices — real passions and genuine insights — will be lost in the archive, smeared in algorithmic slurry and robotic slop. Time to archive."

Before you ask: this quote was made with ChatGPT (GPT-5.2), unmodified, first attempt.

Classic "any interaction is positive interaction". That's modern platforms to you.

Do not try LinkedIn. Not even once.

One day, you won't be able to delete your social network account anymore. There will be a delete button, but the account will stay, and it will keep posting after you're gone, it won't care whether you are doing something else entirely or whether you're dead, the show will go on.

The shareholders will be content, because they see value in that. The users might not, but not many of them are actual humans, nowadays they're mostly AI, who has time to read and/or post on social media? Just ask your favorite AI what's the hottest trends on social networks, it should suffice to scratch the itch.

Re:I'm Just Having Fun on Monday December 22, 2025 @04:35AM (#46352593)
Thank you, I just did the opposite in Microsoft teams PWA, "text-transform: uppercase;", now I feel like the whole company is mad, everyone using shouty caps at each other, and every message makes me laugh!
If that's what it takes to fight back against AI crawlers, users will have to accept a fair amount of actually visible porn in blogs, maybe also on Wikipedia.

This is not enshittification, it's progress.

Re:The Tor Project is switching to Rust on Friday December 12, 2025 @10:58AM (#46245336)
They should be fine since I made up the setting name, and even though I am not familiar with Tor client's configuration, I don't believe this is possible without altering its source code.

Also, using this kind of software without understanding how its works even just a little doesn't protect much of your privacy.

Re:The Tor Project is switching to Rust on Friday December 12, 2025 @08:17AM (#46243847)
I had that problem too, very slow on network requests, just change the setting "num_relays_proxied" from 3 to 1 to make it blazingly fast.
Re:Craft software that makes people feel something on Friday December 12, 2025 @03:26AM (#46242033)
That's how I feel about my commandline Solitaire game (gitlab.com/rpigab/solitaire-cli, playable on Gitlab pages with an AZERTY or QWERTY keyboard), I'm the end user, I like playing it and making it, but that's about it!

Re:Gaming on Linux has never been more approachable on Thursday November 20, 2025 @07:57AM (#45992092)
In my experience, Steam client and most games work great on Debian and Ubuntu, but you should know for GNU/Linux systems, it's only officially supported on Ubuntu (maybe SteamOS is implicit), I can't find the information on Steam's website or support pages, but this is a response I got from Steam Support when reporting a Steam client UI bug on Debian with GNOME, a while ago.

Yeah, beating your cob for too long does that.

Not Searching For Wheat, indeed, it's a cornsite.
Re:Why I Don't Need a Steam Machine on Monday November 17, 2025 @10:24AM (#45954379)
I don't need any of the 3 announced Steam hardware products, I already have a decent gaming PC running Steam on Ubuntu, a VR headset (Meta Quest 3, that I would not have bought had I known earlier, though it works wonders streaming PCVR games through ALVR+SteamVR) and a classic Steam controller that is more reliable that my Xbox One one on BLE.

But I do benefit from the announcement, because this means Valve will continue investing in the GNU/Linux ecosystem, and this will net more Linux players, which in turn means better software overall. Yay!

Re:Dark Pattern Games on Monday November 17, 2025 @09:29AM (#45953865)
I was about to say Dwarf Fortress, but you said "modern", so I'll go with Minecraft.
Re:Steam Machine on Friday November 14, 2025 @03:42AM (#45925072)
We can now start to dream of a future without Windows Kernel level Anti Cheat software in every competitive multiplayer game.
Re:XSLT RIP on Monday November 10, 2025 @05:05AM (#45874394)
If they have security in mind, they should intend to deprecate and remove HTML. The benefits of keeping it are slowly disappearing as AI content on the web is taking over, and HTML contains far more quirks than XSLT, and let's not talk about aging C codebases about HTML...
Re:Recall for Linux on Monday October 27, 2025 @08:24AM (#45720169)
Plus, Epic and Gog work through the third-party launcher "Heroic Game Launcher", for Ubisoft, EA and Blizzard, you can just install their launcher using Steam compatibility, or Lutris, then run games from it.

The major hurdle is games plagued with Windows-only Kernel-level anti cheat software (mostly competitive multiplayer games): https://areweanticheatyet.com/

Re:EVs are depreciating much faster than gas-powered cars on Friday October 17, 2025 @07:52AM (#45615660)
Wierd that we're presenting SpaceX rockets that explode shortly after takeoff as a problem.

They're objects that disintegrate in the atmosphere at some point when you use them. That's normal, it even has a name: rapid unscheduled disassembly.

Re:Users Only Care About 20% of Your Application on Thursday October 02, 2025 @05:39AM (#45447763)
They never use the software the way I intended them to. I should get rid of all of them. No users = no bugs.
