Re:Anthropic's growth just flattened (really) on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:56PM (#50347452)
Opus 5.5 may be occasionally better than other models on code (I find this debatable though, because Astra is very good and will often do better imo), but I would wager there's way more money to be made on things like image and multimodal tasks or at least nearly as much, and frankly even Gemini 3.8 flash can spank Anthropics best models on visual tasks and be absurdly cheaper; that also ignores the increasing aggressive classifiers Dario seems to like which block a lot of stuff and I've seen drive a number of zai subscriptions because blue teaming is increasingly very important.
Re:Anthropic's growth just flattened (really) on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:51PM (#50347409)
There's a stock market truism that anyone that has real alpha doesn't sell it or give it away. I feel like there's an analogue here, that if it was just that easy for them to pack up their toys and go conquer the world, I can't imagine they would have been in the business of selling tokens at this point
Re:Why are car keys so expensive to replace? on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:29PM (#50346818)
For whatever it's worth, both the common Chinese models and frontier American models are remarkably good at uh...rapidly reversing a lot of electronics and peripheral tools around many or most automobiles on the road, and if you're clever or maybe bad, the uplift from the models has enabled a lot of both good and absurd shit like being able to rapidly reprogram a key with under a $100 in hardware. It's certainly nice not needing to fight VIDA just because Volvo is a company that hates their customers and just generally sucks post Ford, but I presume this also makes everything recent easier to steal.
Re:Why are car keys so expensive to replace? on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:20PM (#50346768)
Honestly I think if someone restarted production of the Jeep XJ as it was towards the end of its run they would probably outsell almost everything you could buy today.
Re:Why are car keys so expensive to replace? on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:17PM (#50346749)
Honestly I'll take that over the shit we have today. The ignition key had a resistor whose value was keyed to the ecm and it wouldn't start if it was wrong (which was why at least the Camaros and Corvettes had separate keys). It was enough of a hurdle that I still think it would deter anyone who didn't have both time and really wanted your car, and if they have both they're probably getting it anyway.
Re:Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:04PM (#50341914)
So wait so this considered "distillation" and how long until we get another public letter from Dario or Sam pants shitting over this?
Re:Noctua Fan Swap on a Calnex Rb/GPS Frequency Reference on Saturday October 31, 2026 @10:49PM (#50322307)
I assume Jeff used an industrialPPC variant here, but I kind of wonder if there isn't an EBM Papst or Sanyo Denki part that would have been sufficiently quiet and a better fit. The Noctua parts are usually at least decent, but they're really not the end all for fans.
Re:Linode Security Incident on Friday October 30, 2026 @10:15PM (#50312617)
I'm just waiting for someone to drop a real zero day on openssh or openvpn for before the real pants pooping starts.
Does this impact Incus or is it just LXD?
That gets done with stolen vehicles and some rebuilds occasionally, but a VIN swap like that is a fast path to federal pound me in the ass prison.
Even if you do wait the mandatory period or it was otherwise ok, if the government catches wind that you're trying to do something less stupid than buying the trash the current manufacturers are pedalling, they will clamp down. Kei trucks and the Mahindra Roxor are just more examples of why you can't run something more efficient down any road for various poor reasons likely because they cut into someone else's profits.
Re:We should be more ambitious with the software we build on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:24PM (#50227982)
Honestly I think you're on to something, as by far the most novel and interesting use cases I've seen for LLMs in general are mostly around reverse engineering things, especially if you can hit it with Ghidra, but honestly anything that can feed some sort of data and control back to a model.

> Gunsmith wouldn't buy parts on eBay

I want to say something mean and sarcastic, but I will tell you that for gunsmithing eBay was (is?) very useful, at least for the gunsmiths I know. It was the best place to find a replacement 92S slide and a lot of second hand Tony Kidd parts before a rimfire carnival, but we live in the land of the free, and I don't need to get on my knees and beg for a loiscene like some people.

What a load of bullshit. I guess you can't even buy something like a HackRF on here now? What really even qualifies as "transmit radio equipment?" Is a short wave antenna and balun going to be banned? Is a broadband amplifier going to be banned too?
Re:Using AI to reverse engineer hardware on Friday October 16, 2026 @07:26AM (#50117065)
Maybe some of the newer stuff is better, but you're kind of overselling the hardware protection (lol). I'm sure everyone thought RDP1 on the STM32F1xx series was going to stop "bad guys" (or even RDP2, lol) but I was able to do better than Obermaier on firmware recovery of a F103 recently without going to the trouble of doing something like delidding a chip or even undersoldering it. The newer stuff is a little better, but a quarter in the Deepseek machine, some fairly common tools and patience, and even skids will be breaking into your invulnerable firmware fortress. I think the apocalyptic nature of all this just hasn't really sunk in for a lot of EEs or firmware developers.

I'm just waiting for us to hit the ZIRP/NIRP forever stage so I can refi my mortgage
Re:OpenCode 2.0 on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @09:07PM (#50097882)
If it doesn't work at least ok with something like xterm, someone really needs to reconsider some life decisions. Htop makes it work, why should a terminal emulator need to crack the engima just to render silly stuff?
Re:OpenCode 2.0 on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @09:04PM (#50097862)
omp?
Re:Claude Haiku 5.5 on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @03:43PM (#49997849)
Something is not right there. DSv4.1 flash shows $1.89 for tens of thousands of tokens? What am I missing?
Re:Testing 12 different Zigbee temperature/humidity sensors on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @06:53AM (#49976701)
I don't so much care if it's a Chinese knock off or a real deal Bosch BMP, but if you're interested in measurements that are better than vague vibes, the difference between a cheap poopoo glass thermistor hooked up to the noisiest 8-bit ADC (let's be real about what's actually in there), sets a real limit on anything that device will ever be capable of, especially if you have more than one. If a device has got a real deal BMP581 (yes that's a pressure+temp sensor, but let's roll with it) that's a whole other ballgame, and yeah they could have messed up the housing or it could brown out, have bad lower power characteristics, or bad firmware, but that BOM difference says a lot about what the engineer who designed it probably thought the device should be capable of.
Hopefully we at least get some cool Tom Cruise action scenes when we create our own shitty version of Minority Report
Re:Testing 12 different Zigbee temperature/humidity sensors on Monday October 05, 2026 @09:32PM (#49973057)
One of the things I never see in reports like this is what sensor is being used (is it a Bosch unit? Sensiron? Plain thermistor? Pixies and Fairy Dust? Some bodged together 1wire deal?) and what MCU (Nordic? Espresif? Microchip? Something else?) as those have a huge bearing on what the sensor is actually capable of, and would say a lot about precision/accuracy and battery life.
Re:So You Think You Could Be an Electrician? on Saturday October 03, 2026 @10:51PM (#49950151)
There's demand but for all but the most specialized stuff (maybe NVH), the work is brutal and the flag hour system sucks ass. Got a warranty job? Better be happy with half pay. Got something that's an absolute bitch to get apart or something goes wrong? Yeah you're still getting paid the same even if it's not your fault. There's a good reason Ford can't find enough auto techs. There's no way I would go back to earning money as a mechanic over something like HVAC or being a millwright.
Re:Getting the most out of Opus 5.5 in Claude and Claude Code on Saturday October 03, 2026 @06:38PM (#49948461)
I have been doing some very similar stuff and have also had frankly unbelievable (good) results with both Anthropic and OpenAI models on understanding and modifying some analog circuits out of some old one off ham equipment.
I mean I would suspect (and suggest) rebuilding older stuff, as honestly the cars from 10+ years ago are in many, many ways better built and more reliable, but don't ask me why I know this, but with certain LLM assistance, an absolute boatload of modification and RE on newer cars has become much more tractable, including reworking the telemetry. I'm not a lawyer all stunts were performed by a professional on a closed course.
Re:The top secret URSALA, RAQUEL, and FARRAH satellites on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @11:14PM (#49917294)
Honestly I'm sure if they're releasing stuff as good as 3DEP (which is extraordinary, by the way), the spooks probably have every leaf, pebble and dirt mound mapped out across the entire face of the earth.
Re:Show HN: NSL – WSL for Linux on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @12:28PM (#49896021)
So you've just basically reimplemented LXC?
All I can imagine is they must be on massive amounts of drugs at Ford given the FCA level or worse crap to come out if there in recent history.
It's worth noting that just because it says ESP32, doesn't mean it has WiFi (see the P4), and yeah not just RISC-V but also xtensa. I think it's more synonymous with "has a very shitty ADC" imo.
