Re:Lego collaboration with Daft Punk

You seem to be missing some critical context, which is that this set is coming from a site where fans can just propose new sets and if they get enough votes LEGO will consider making an official version. So yes, this is largely a set for adults and the price is set as such.

Yeah it's called quantization. The thing is, though, is when you start producing music you realize heavily quantized music is extremely stale and boring. You have to put in effort by adding "off the grid" details to make it feel alive.

Someone posts something like this here every so often. This subreddit is unsurprisingly full of this stuff. While we shouldn't discount the current state of education, I am also deeply skeptical of how representative this is of the broader system.
Re:Kevin Kelly's 2016 AI Predictions, 10 Years Later
on Monday October 12, 2026 @03:32PM (#50061727)
Another prediction I remember from this book was that AI would be supplied much like electricity as a kind of utility into many different appliances. This is basically how it has turned out with tokens and APIs.
Re:I'm sorry, but you still have to think

"If you looked at the code, and yeah, I know, we should not be reading code anymore"
I'm pretty sure this is sarcasm, but it's also a major factor in what differentiated slop from non-slop AI work: did a developer actually take the time to review and clean up generated code. Which is, itself, an extremely time consuming process

Re:RuneScape's Position on Gen AI
on Sunday October 04, 2026 @11:57AM (#49955026)
There's a lot of anti-AI warriors on Reddit in the game development space. I dislike lazy AI slop use in games as much as anyone else, but I also dislike the lack of nuance in these positions. They think it's gotta be all or nothing. It will become increasingly unrealistic to expect game developers to not use AI in some part of their process, especially code development, but such use does not automatically make it slop.
Re:The Four Horsemen of Agentic Coding

I'm gonna make the claim that all of these are results of how someone uses an agent (poorly), not a result of the agents themselves.
Re:Context Language Models

This was my gut reaction as well but I think this is just a poor abstract. What they actually did appears to be much deeper than reinventing agents.md

Re:Any nerds out there who've read a lot of research papers?
on Friday September 25, 2026 @09:30PM (#49852254)
Abstracts are not meant to be entertaining or memorable; they're meant to be highly functional. When you're reading a billion papers, a good abstract is important because it lets you get the gist of the paper and whether or not it's relevant to what you're researching in about 10 seconds. Make your abstract extremely clear and well structured about what you did, why, and your biggest finding, and the worry about giving it a good hook.

How much scope do you give it? I find it's easier to stay in control when you give it scope down the chunks of work you give it.

These kinds of updates always have this romantic scenario of someone having Claude develop a presentation or something on their way to work between multiple devices, which actually feels a little sad and does not align with what happens in my life at all.

Re:Neo Emacs – Emacs from the Future

It's hard to take this seriously when it has wonky Claude website design. Rewriting emacs in Rust also feels like a nonsensical task.
Re:GPT-6 built this earth exploration site in 5 prompts
on Friday September 11, 2026 @06:47PM (#49666472)
I've been seeing lots of demos like this, especially with games. Yes, they are impressive, but I'm surprised nobody is talking about some of the things I've noticed with GPT-6: the code it writes, by default, is surprisingly messy and obviously unmaintainable. It's also very...not human. No human would write code like it does. I get the sense that the optimization of these models on benchmarks is causing their behavior to morph into a very brute-force type of approach. It makes you think: when code is suddenly very cheap, does good style and organization even matter as much? Or were those just important for humans? (I think they still do, for the record).

I agree that this is an example of interesting and good AI usage. The person who made it obviously put thought into it. Unfortunately a lot of vibe coded sites do not have that same level of care

Re:What You Gain by Building Your Own Game Engine
on Friday August 14, 2026 @08:18PM (#49306209)
The simple reason that a lot of the games made without a custom engine don't sell is because they're simply turds. Games don't sell based on what engine they were made in. Games sell because they're good games.
Re:How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
on Sunday August 09, 2026 @04:03PM (#49235220)
The biggest thing I've learned from doing stuff like this is that there are no shortcuts. At some point or another, to truly learn something deeply, you've got to dig in to the boring details and do things the hard way. LLMs can help with this...but I find it's usually tempting to try and just offload the boring stuff to them, which doesn't work.
Re:The Vibe Coding Trap: Why AI-Assisted Projects Still Fail
on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @10:57PM (#49016324)
Bleh. My eyes glaze over reading slop like this. It's a neat idea to have LLMs argue but something about the writing style just feels gross now...
OP seems to be wrestling with this feeling that LLMs are simultaneously incredibly useful and also leave a very hollow feeling inside, like it's cheating. The redefinition is how we choose to move forward with hobbies and art when we know these tools are available.
We continue to grapple with AI and how it's impacting our lives by trying to find comfort in comparisons to the past, or to other things that we do. But the reality is, there's never been anything quite like this before, and it's forcing us to redefine how we value work, art, craftsmanship, and output. Sometimes, those redefinitions are extremely uncomfortable.
