Re:Have You Ever Tried to Sell a Diamond? (1982) on Tuesday September 18, 2012 @12:54PM (#4539152)
I got my wife a moissonite ring. I took it to a jewelry store once to get it cleaned. The person there went on about how beautiful it was. I said it was moissonite and she quickly said we don't work on moissonite and handed the ring back and left. Everyone assumes it is diamond because it is double refractive and actually brighter than diamond. Only a gemmologist would know the difference.
Re:What's a $4000 Suit Worth? on Tuesday September 04, 2012 @10:32PM (#4477648)
yes, things are not so simple. This man is not an idiot. He understand that raising the price could bring in more money with the same number of clients.
This is a grey area. It IS rude to setup an interview then cancel at the last minute. It is NOT rude to send a thank you note the next day and say that you will be perusing other opportunities. Anywhere in-between these 2 conditions is going to offend someone.

It may feel good to explain why you have no interest in working in a place where egos are based on coding standards adherence, it is better to maintain professionalism.

You will not know how safe they are until accidents happen. I would love to see someone with money run an experiment with real drivers vs google cars. Create a worst case scenario course with simulated drunk drivers, blown tires, missing stop signs, etc.. and run this with real and fake drivers. I suspect the average driver would crash 10% of the time, autonomous car would crash 1% of the time, and a professional driver would crash never.

The real safety improvements will come when all cars are autonomous and they talk to each other.

A. I agree that there are much sadder stories about how drug laws and poverty put people into situations where they have no other choice.

B. He is not the 1%. If a 1%er kid got pulled over with a bunch of drugs in his pockets it would be a totally different story. He would probably not consent to a search because his lawyer would have already told him not to. Even if he had consented to a search, the cop probably would get a call from the sheriff, governor, attorney general, etc.. telling him that the kid should be let go. Even if the kid was arrested, a team of lawyers would be searching for loop holes and connections to the DA to get the case dropped. Even if the kid was convicted, the lawyers would appeal. And large donations would be made to the election campaigns of govenor,DA, etc.. to try and get a pardon or retrial.

I plan on using the same worthsmithing they used during the last layoffs. "This is a great place to work, but due to circumstances out of my control I unfortunately have to realign and focus my goals towards other opportunites"
Re:How I made $10k in one day with Facebook Ads on Tuesday July 31, 2012 @01:15PM (#4318422)
I just sold a car battery on craigslist for $50. It cost me $0.00. My ROI is well over 3000000%.
The republicans want to frame the presidential race as Big government vs. small government. "Romney wants to let the free market fuel America's success while Obama wants the government to your money and spend it how they see fit" Obama has recently tried to point out that the success of the free market in America has been dependent on the US Government. "Someone built the road and bridges and someone educated your employees, and someone built they internet that you use. Those things were funded by tax dollars." In this editorial this guy is hoping to convince people that the government was not responsible for setting the foundation of the internet.

It is worth the price if you need the features. If Running a few VMs on a server there is no reason to pay 6k for vSphere.

Yes enterprise customers want to decrypt and inspect all traffic, for legitimate and sometimes sketchy reasons.

Gay Marriage is also illegal in many places, but that doesn't make it wrong.

When you treat adults like this they will not like or respect you and will want you to fail. Any time this boss makes a mistake his employees will make him pay.

"Oh yeah we can't work this week because the boss told us to throw away our safety glasses. Yes, we saw the UPS truck run into the river that probably had the new safety glasses on them. But we are supposed to do what the boss says"

yes. I think they are selling a system on a chip with WIFI. But they are marketing WIFI on everything.
Re:Paul Graham's Letter to YC Companies on Tuesday June 05, 2012 @09:37AM (#4068556)
On day 1 it was a success, but now it is a disaster for several reasons.

1. It is harder to attract people to come work for you when you company's valuation is going down. Obviously FB can afford to pay for talent, but that cost just went up.

2. If FB ever needed to get more investment money, people may be more reluctant due to this situation.

3. If your company was getting acquired by FB would you want to be paid in cash or Stock?

Now I understand, Because you say it doesn't exist then I shouldn't talk about it.
The other meaningful definition of worth is the inherent value of the object. A ION bracelet or Rawlings Power Bracelet may be sold for $30. But the plastic or metal in the item is actually worth $2. Or the fact that someone now believes they have better balance may be worth $2,000 to them, but the metal and plastic costs $2.
Re:Facebook trades under $30, down 7%+ on Tuesday May 29, 2012 @03:00PM (#4039116)
NO I don't have any proof. If wall street left lots of proof in their wake, people would have gone to jail during the housing crash. Maybe I'm wrong, Maybe the stock randomly hit 34,32,30,29 and plateaued because normal investors put in orders for those prices.
Re:Facebook trades under $30, down 7%+ on Tuesday May 29, 2012 @12:36PM (#4038308)
Morgan Stanley has been putting in floors to keep this stock from totally crashing. They cannot keep it up forever.
Re:First Retire... Then Get Rich on Thursday May 24, 2012 @04:12PM (#4020324)
"Historically" home prices went up in the US until 2006 for well over 30 years.

It is interesting that you bring up cherry picking because that is exactly how mutual fund companies work. They have a lot of funds, the funds that do well stay around and the funds that do not do well are canceled. This fund that I mentioned is only 8 years old. Knowing which mutual funds are going to produce over 30 years is like knowing what stocks are going to produce over 30 years. You can 'cherry pick' examples for 8% or -8%, but it is crazy to assume that the fund you pick is going to get 5% over inflation over 30 years.

Re:First Retire... Then Get Rich on Thursday May 24, 2012 @01:34PM (#4019548)
From the article:

- buying a conservative dividend-paying stock index fund – go to Vanguard.com and start an account to buy some units of the VFINX fund, or if you have a brokerage account you can buy SPY shares. - last resort: just putting the money into a cash account that pays the highest level of interest you can find – Vanguard’s Prime Money Market fund or ING Direct’s Orange Savings Account.

VFINX is a -0.76% for 5 years ING Orange is currently at 0.80%

How can you assume 5% after inflation? That is no different that assuming that home prices will go up by 2-3% a year. It sounds reasonable but there is no way of knowing exactly how that will play out.

During the dot-com bubble there were IPOs where the P/E was far beyond 100. So it isn't totally crazy to think the market could whip people into a frenzy over the idea that 'they are getting in on the ground floor of the next google' What is crazy is to think that NASDAQ hasn't fixed it by now. If there were a lot of people out there who wanted to get in on the next big thing they would have put in market orders and those orders would have been filled by now.
Re:FB down 8% at opening on Monday May 21, 2012 @10:48AM (#4003073)
Morgan Stanley makes a ton of money this quarter, while telling their customers that they should stay in for the long term (5+ years). It is too bad those people are getting screwed by Wall St. But a fool and his money are soon separated, or whatever that quote is.
I suspect they will keep this up next week. They will also work out a deal with facebook for facebook to buyback lots of the shares that Morgan Stanley is buying. That way the stock price can go up while the market cap is going down.
Re:NASDAQ:FB on Friday May 18, 2012 @03:53PM (#3993567)
They put in a floor at 38.00 because they cannot stand the idea of the stock going down on the first day of trading.
Re:Testing like the TSA on Thursday April 12, 2012 @09:17AM (#3832170)
There are too many managers that just want Metrics. for example: Bill created 100 tests this month, Sam has 95% automated test coverage.

These metrics don't mean anything.

That is sad that a criminal is attacking him. I don't think that India is the only country where criminals exist though.

It would be like the a professional basketball player refusing to intentionally foul Shaq because they feel that hitting someone is simply immoral. I respect your desire to "Keep your word, period" and I also respect someone who refuses to hit someone in a sport. But you are simply putting yourself at a disadvantage to the team you are playing against.
