Re:Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (November 2012) on Thursday November 01, 2012 @11:14AM (#4727921)
SEEKING WORK - Montreal. Remote / local / relocation ok. Contract / fulltime ok.

I'm a programmer with over 10 years of experience, mostly in the game industry, mostly in C++. Resume and references available by contacting me by email. See my profile for the address.

Note: I'm eligible to work in the US.

Can you tell us which groups are considered less desirable?
Please elaborate. I'm interested to hear if your experience is more than survivor bias.

  (1) Don't take jobs where the company isn't willing to
tell you what you'll be working on. That usually means
you're going to be allocated to the least desirable
  projects.
I passed on a job at Google precisely because of this fear. I wonder if they've since changed that practice.
Re:GapList – A Lightning-Fast List Implementation on Tuesday May 08, 2012 @09:24AM (#3943460)
I wonder how the GapList performance compares to unrolled linked lists.

Re:What should every programmer know about security? on Monday May 07, 2012 @01:16PM (#3939908)
I would add this to the suggested reading list:

It's like a horse-and-buggy company pivoting into the auto industry. It wouldn't be easy, but it could be done.
Re:The Jet that Ate the Pentagon on Monday May 07, 2012 @03:46AM (#3938081)

F-35 lacks the F-16's agility in the air-to-air mode and
the F-15E's range and payload in the bombing mode, and it
can't even begin to compare to the A-10 at low-altitude
close air support for troops engaged in combat.
"jack of all trades, master of none". :(
That's a good point. I wonder what future law enforcement potential this will have.

"House too warm? Must be a grow operation."

Why not buy Nokia for its patents and dump the rest of the business then?
I've worked for a large publisher. Ports are low hanging fruits that keeps revenues coming in while we're working on bigger things. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Just give it time.
Re:Traditional C "Hello World" working in NaCl on Sunday May 06, 2012 @07:33AM (#3934843)
I wonder how it handles a bogus printf format string.

I sometimes wonder if the high cost of healthcare is not, in part, a conspiracy from larger companies to keep people from taking jobs at startups.

Edit: (To my many silent downvoters..) Healthcare being tied to your employer is a competitive advantage of larger companies, isn't it? Either way, speak up!

Maybe the solution is to use IP law the same way that brand name companies use IP law to fight Chinese knockoffs.
But..but..Everyone's told me that A players only hire A players, and hiring anyone else would sink my company. I'm an A player and only Linus himself will be good enough to write my CRUD app. I wonder when he'll be available..
Re:Ask HN: How to security scan your web application? on Saturday May 05, 2012 @07:18PM (#3933595)
Not a tool, but a good read on this subject nonetheless:

Re:Ask HN: What are your favorite films about startups? on Saturday May 05, 2012 @07:10PM (#3933582)
You can't mention Pirates of Silicon Valley without mentioning Triumph of the Nerds. :)

Re:Renting Prosperity on Saturday May 05, 2012 @06:49PM (#3933524)

But a steelworker in Buffalo, or an underemployed
construction worker in Las Vegas, can't easily take his
skills to where they are needed in North Dakota or
Wyoming if he's underwater on his mortgage.
Maybe the federal government could ease this problem by taking over, temporarily, underwater mortgages while an owner is working out of state.
My favorite:

Remove the syntactic mess that is attributes.
One of the many reasons I love json.
Re:People are losing trust in all institutions on Saturday May 05, 2012 @03:07AM (#3931561)
I'm not surprised to see banks having sunk so much with the current financial crisis.

I really recommend watching this recent Frontline documentary on the subject:

Why is this boat considered a catamaran and not a trimaran?
Re:Boeing agrees to buy Airbus jets to ease 777 sale on Friday May 04, 2012 @05:50PM (#3930488)
tl;dr

Just like car dealerships, the world's dominant aircraft
manufacturers sometimes offer to take back their old
models when trying to persuade airlines to upgrade to the
  latest models
Re:Javascript - Beautiful Validation, No Extras. on Friday May 04, 2012 @07:26AM (#3927922)
Lines of code aren't at a premium. Why not favor readability over cleverness when possible?

I pity the person who'll be maintain this.

Re:How to Muddy Your Tracks on the Internet on Thursday May 03, 2012 @10:10AM (#3923898)

Another shrouding tactic is to use the search engine
DuckDuckGo, which distinguishes itself with a “We do not
  track or bubble you!” policy.
I'm glad to see DuckDuckGo get some positive publicity!
Re:Reverse authentication for banking on Wednesday May 02, 2012 @06:52PM (#3921595)
If the number of digits is the only thing insecure about this system, it sounds pretty easy to harden by adding a few extra digits (or letters).
How do you explain "open" projects like this one, which is basically offering a year-long subscription to whatever they produce:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1005365109/jane-jensens-...

It doesn't seem like this project should've been accept.

Re:Groupon Plunges as Board Members Reportedly Leaving on Monday April 30, 2012 @04:57PM (#3911455)
Could this be the beginning of the end of Bubble 2.0?

I understand this is just one company, but what I'm wondering is if this could have a domino effect.
