Re:Why PS4 downloads are so slow on Sunday August 20, 2017 @06:16AM (#15057785)
I've experienced similar thing with PS3. That said, unlike the author I am too lazy to inspect traffic on that.
Re:Please Make Google AMP Optional on Sunday June 11, 2017 @02:42PM (#14533136)
on my phone if i increase/decrease the default font size, AMP uses that.
Re:Please Make Google AMP Optional on Sunday June 11, 2017 @02:40PM (#14533126)
AFAIK AMP is just a list of Do's and Dont's that google qualify as AMP content. Even other search engines like DuckDuckGo and Bing could use it if the choose so. You can access AMP outside of google and host it yourself. You can go AMP-only if you o please. Instant Articles from Facebook on other hand is tied into facebook's platform.
I added a padding on the div element because the text stretches too wide on my display. Other than that, it's fast and readable. the only improvement i can think of is max-width:80vw or something like that.
I really don't understand US's use of SSN. You people treat it as a secret while it isn't. Now this is a place while something like SSN would've helped but NYPD still uses the old name+D.O.B. combination for checks. US is basically using a very insecure method of national identity. Maybe US should just go ahead and implement a real National Identity Program now.

discord has become so much more than a gaming comms platform now. And rightfully so. It is an amazing platform.
Re:Starting an Internet Service Provider on Tuesday February 21, 2017 @02:31PM (#13698877)
So using the user's phone just for auth, akin to cards? Nice idea!

Jio's 4G data isn't going to last forever. They are going to charge for it someday. Maybe from april, maybe from next year. But one day they will. Also Jio at some places is too slow still.
Re:Starting an Internet Service Provider on Tuesday February 21, 2017 @02:19PM (#13698716)
Hmm, went through your website and i like your idea.

What do you use for backhaul? chaiwalas and paanwalas aren't going to have network access in form of fiber or even cable on the street so i guess 4G hotspot? Also, Is there a way people can pay the stall owner some money and get a token from him? People here generally dont prefer online transactions.

Re:Cards Against Humanity is digging a hole in the earth on Sunday November 27, 2016 @08:03AM (#13048929)
I have returned/replaced almost 50% of items from Flipkart (Indian competitor of Amazon) because they sent me defective or broken packages. I have had a couple of packages that look like they were opened. I'd never shop there if it weren't for these 'exclusives' they have with companies. :/
Re:Cards Against Humanity is digging a hole in the earth on Sunday November 27, 2016 @08:00AM (#13048923)
Now I am curious, What's the issue if the list price says that it is >$1?
Re:Ask HN: How do you measure residential ISP uptime? on Tuesday August 30, 2016 @04:47AM (#12388399)
i ping 8.8.8.8 every 10 mins and log it if it cant connect. Nothing for speed though.
Now that's something we actually can accept. 100bytes/sec is too low for any practical use but 64kbps-128kbps is a good speed.
As stated above, even Facebook themselves couldn't point to a single user that for to internet for first time using the free basics campaign. People who want internet and a smartphone required to connect to internet can already get to internet. On other end, people don't have a smartphone to access the free basics program and Facebook doesn't solve that problem. Facebook is jsut trying to get more people to use Facebook by giving access for free and bundling a few low usage apps people rarely use in name of charity
The amount of money they used for lobbying and andverts was enough for them to pay for actual costs of internet packs if they worked with carriers on that
Nationalism could be considered good thing if you are in early to mid 20th century. But today when we are this global, being this nationalist makes no sense. Yes I understand nationalism here is grounded in our freedom history but in todays world it makes no sense.
Yeah Facebook says so. How many times have companies (even Facebook) said something and something entirely different. Facebook still reserves right to not allow you on their service. In addition they want ability to see and even modify content going between you and the customer.Facebook can actually say that they can't accept you because of reason X while they actually want no competition to Whatsapp or Facebook
Facebooks data has always been vague.

Live in Mumbai and while I dont travel via train every day, I do it quite often and spend hours at the platform or in the train. People actually spend 3-4 hrs in trains traveling.

Yeah. It might have, again might have some benefits I. Short run but free basics is and will hold both the people and companies back. Nobody is criticising Google and others trying to provide free access or subsidised access to internet because they actually befefit from the open internet and there companies aren't breaking net neutrality. Your farmer from rural India probably doesn't need an email address, his needs are quite different.

You can get around constant buffering with about 1Mbps and VP9 codec. You can't ever get HD streams with no buffering at 512. If you wait at start for it to move ahead, that is a different story. The reason why you still see the spinner even on 2-3 Megs connection is that although you ISP is saying that you will get 2-3 Mbps, the connection to YouTube streaming server you are fetching content from is notat that rate. You can use the "stats for nerds" option in the yt player to get aprox speed you are getting
Turning? at what point of time in their entirety have they not.
Pointing out the expenses fb is ready to take. (450 per night is pennies to them but still. A non profit charity tries to divert all money on actual cause. )

I am fine if they collect basic anonymous telemetry data to track user patterns and find out system stability and such only if they specifically state all the parameters they collect.

Plus them collecting data from windows 8(.1) and 7 users without any proper warning/message to user is wrong.

The people who run the regulatory body, they will pass this with quite a strong majority
Re:Indian regulator to Facebook: Stop spamming us on Tuesday January 12, 2016 @06:43AM (#10886821)
While faceboom says the platrform is open and adfree, Facebook still can legally add in their ads and deny companies access to their "free basics" platform. It makes a legal monopoly for many companies participating in free basics and pursuading Facebook to block competition.
