News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Surely there is a ycombinator startup around the corner that will fix this problem.
Re:Now That Information Is Free, What's a College Campus For? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @01:13AM (#50082669)
There is something to be said about being surrounded by people also devoting their full energy to learning something.

It’s more inspiring and fulfilling than being alone with a YouTube video. Also you might make life long friends or meet the love of your life.

Re:Meta and Microsoft Limit Employee Use of Claude AI Tools on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @03:25PM (#49997612)
The forklift should just be paid for by the employee. After all they should be strong enough to do work without one.
Media is so expensive now that it inspired me to take up sailing instead. It’s nice to get outside.
Can’t they just get away with this by claiming they were doing AI research and their agent broke out of their sandbox?
I find remote work makes it harder to draw boundaries. I don’t really have work hours anymore. Co workers are all over the world. Sub 7am meetings. Post 6pm meetings. I wonder if in the old days pre remote if you could just close that laptop and go home?
Re:Pixel Watch 5 on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @09:31PM (#49280822)
I just use garmin watches to track health stuff. I would literally jump for joy if there were a free alternative software and hardware stack to replace this watch or at the very least a cycling computer.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2026) on Monday August 03, 2026 @11:29PM (#49164099)
The market is pretty bad, they will get someone who lives in a low cost of living state who will take it.
I recently bought an external cdrom for my laptop. The library here has a wonderful cd collection.
I’d do whatever is not working at Amazon. At Cambridge you will build yourself as a person and probably make life long friends. By the time you’re done the industry may well be over the AI hype and the job market might make more sense.

In this case you will be well reared to take advantage of it.

Re:Nintendo has raised its employees base salary by 10% on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @12:34PM (#48749521)
The shareholders must be furious about this. Why not lay off 30% of the team and outsource game development and use ai for the art? That seems smarter.
Isn’t this fair game? Didn’t these companies basically steal to make these models to begin with?
Re:Mullvad exit IPs are surprisingly identifying on Friday May 15, 2026 @05:59PM (#48154467)
Is it wrong that I assume these VPN services are probably honeypots in some way?

As a php coder I’m more fond of Lamborghini.
Stuff like this is coming for everyone.
Re:Palantir Wants to Reinstate the Draft on Monday April 20, 2026 @12:58PM (#47837139)
Doesn’t ycombinator and hacker news have links with this company? Makes it hard to maintain the hacker ethos when this entire site seems so closely linked with such forces.
Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (April 2026) on Sunday April 12, 2026 @06:35PM (#47745256)
Porting a giant monolithic JSF app from JSF/Wildfly to two separate apps, a react frontend and a REST Quarkus backend.

First time doing this sort of thing with agents. So far it seems ok?

If it works out it will really help us scale and improve a legacy application that so many depend on at the moment. Wish me luck!

Yeah but large tech companies don’t just operate by breaking laws like this.
People who want healthcare and maybe kids who would like school lunch I guess?
Your know the answer to this question haha.
Re:Meta will shut down VR Horizon Worlds access June 15 on Wednesday March 18, 2026 @02:23PM (#47429400)
I thought so too about the steam frame. Then I saw the pass through was not good. Pass through for me has made these products so more livable. It was downright shocking how much less isolating it felt to have full color pass through.
Often I hear. “these are so cool! It’s a shame meta makes them.” All of their pivots will fail because of their track record IMo.
These phones need a kill expression or finger. If you touch a sensor with your left pinky or wink at the camera it nukes the phone.
Re:London became the rest of the startup capital on Friday January 30, 2026 @02:04PM (#46828489)
Can a software engineer afford to buy a home on a London salary? Or is it a similar experience to living in the Bay Area?
Re:There's only one Woz, but we can all learn from him on Wednesday January 28, 2026 @11:46AM (#46797829)
Created by an llm using a super computer cluster haha.
Re:Most renters shut out of energy-saving upgrades – study on Friday January 16, 2026 @07:22PM (#46654006)
Most times your land lord won't let you make anything nicer. They basically want the place to degrade around you so that they can low key force you to leave causing you to abandon your rent control.
Re:STFU on Friday January 16, 2026 @02:36PM (#46651070)
I think it’s cultural to do this or something.
Re:Slop Is Slop on Saturday January 03, 2026 @10:50PM (#46484698)
These artists who do work for tech companies are literally given a day to do this work. Of course they are using AI. They have to. The days of having time to make something great are mostly over.
They should instead recognize free software.
Re:Technical Deflation on Thursday November 27, 2025 @03:13PM (#46072853)
Does anyone really read any of this stuff anyway?
