I think that’s OP’s exact point. It’s not just the capital costs of the build out but the operations costs of running them that can be hard to predict.
It’s amazing to me that this post already feels quite old. But then I realized it only happened yesterday. I just feel that way because in today’s world we have seven different dashcam or security camera video feeds popping up on Reddit or X or whatever within minutes of a news event like this.
Sad story in this case. The cockpit audio was quite chilling.
I would add Fox News in tandem with Facebook, but otherwise, yes. One is the spigot, the other is the hose.
My mom is 76 and absolutely believes the most pressing issues are trans high school swimmers and illegal voting and the biases of the Kennedy Center.
Sure, I have my opinions on those but I’m not saying as a society we aren’t allowed to debate those issues. I’m saying that in some news sources, they’re pure ragebait and completely drown out much more pressing and existential topics we should be solving. They’re simple distraction tactics and a continuation of the culture wars from the 80s and 90s.
This makes sense, though. They have to be exceptionally confident in the performance of the product and work to continually improve its quality and efficiency. Many other companies can get by more just as consumers of it, but the makers of the product need some of the best coding skills available.
Neat project! It's an understandable limitation you had to commit to, but I'm curious how you've found the distortion away from the equator with Mercator. Probably not really noticeable in any major way within the arctic/antarctic circles but obviously closer to poles it's going to get quite wonky.
I can't believe no one I've seen has called out the secret game! Go to Settings>About and then hold the center button for 5 seconds. I used to play so much of this bricks game in college when procrastinating from studying in the library.
30 indexers!? I’m seriously behind the curve with my 2. :-)
Are many of them highly specialized? Just lots of redundancy?
I don’t think many people were believing it was solved forever but just that there was a momentary disruption/decrease while they rebuilt it. But according to this report, even that impact was highly exaggerated.
Oh man. I did something similar but didn’t do the last mile with the cloud bucket and RSS stream and that seems key. I never have the energy to manually copy the mp3s over to the phone.
I’m not up to speed on Meta, but is that even possible? I thought they verified official IDs these days?
Please correct me if I’m wrong here.
I do feel that a lot of pessimists I hear keep banging away about hallucinations and untrustworthy outputs. It makes me think they’re willfully ignorant of the progress since they tried ChatGPT 3 several years ago and were underwhelmed.
I’m happy to engage in discourse on the impact and risks to environment, society, jobs, mental health, etc. There’s plenty of room for thoughtful exploration there.
The one thing I have no patience for is that LLMs produce nothing of value or have no technical worth.
Curious. FWIW, worked with no problems for me running ublock origin on Firefox/Mac.
Can you say more about where you're renting the RTX Pro 6000 for $1/hour?
And not even cold hard cash but “Cloudflare credits.”
What an offensive slap in the face.
Love this. I have a pile of nice Cygolites (both front and tail) that my whole family uses that are maybe 8 or 9 years old. Their capacities have largely dropped to the point that I need to charge them every ride or two. Maybe get about 90 minutes of use, down from 3-4 hours previously.
They're not user-serviceable by design but I've been pondering cracking them open and having a go at swapping the batteries. This post may inspire me.
I've got a pile of new 18650s lying around and hopefully the front lights use those!
You obviously didn’t read it, because he announced things they are commencing unilaterally and immediately.
And other proposals that require collaboration and/or regulation.
Back up your sentiment by reading the source.
Alas, no X account but I'll set a remind to check in again in a month or two. Cheers.
To each their own and the e-ink computer is a neat project. But I'm personally with you on not wanting a separate device. I have my iPhone and a quad lock case I swap on for rides.
Not sure I'm 100% on board with the visual style of your interface (some of the metrics look like they'd be nearly impossible to read while riding 30mph down a gravel road) but I'd love to check it out once it's released.
Do you have a way to sign up for release email or updates for your project?
Good luck!
Right? Not to mention the training/tuning possibilities.
Mercor has a market value of $20B basically doing the same thing but desperately trying to find workers.
Exactly this. They need to offset the areas where they lose money. And we have federal laws (justifiably so, IMHO) that ERs must provide stabilizing services regardless of insurance and ability to pay.
And while that law is obviously humane and reasonable, my only gripe is that the rest of our system is so backwards that it increasingly forces people to leverage that. There was a story about a woman who needed dialysis but had no insurance. So basically, she had to wait every couple weeks until she started breaking down, go to the ER, get emergency dialysis, get sent home. Rinse, repeat.
I don't blame her but really just the system that made this her best possible option.

I'm curious if this also works for USB-A to USB-C. The use case: My Suburu has USB-A inputs and only allows wired Carplay. When I upgraded my iPhone and ditched Lightning, I had to try 6 different cables from my cable drawer to find one that supported data transfer.
I have so many cables I've accumulated over the years, I should either purge or at least categorize the functionality of each.
Yeah. And the first chart on the page highlights that. It's the drop in income or (to your point, even the opportunity cost of missed promotions) that is most challenging.
Though my kids are amazing and absolutely worth it, no questions asked, I did feel like i was playing catchup in my career starting in my mid-30s.
Pretty much. I have an Apple Watch, my wife has a Garmin.
I’m jealous of the advanced metrics and data she has on all of our workouts and the accuracy. And that battery life.
She’s jealous of all the slick bells and whistles (unlocking my laptop automatically, deep app ecosystem, managing grocery lists etc).
Neither is perfect but both have their uses. You have to pick a side (or spend twice as much and pick both sides ;-)).
Not even going to bother replying to the original poster, but thanks for recognizing. Just have never seen anyone on HN misconstrue feedback so badly. Doesn't bode well for their ability to adapt and succeed with a product if they take genuine feedback (corroborated by several others in this thread, mind you) as not constructive and dishonest.
Oh, good catch. Absolutely no chance those are legit and definitely dubious at best, illegal at worst (depending on the region)
Congrats on getting to this place. Wishing you success in the long run. But, if I can be honest for a second, there are some pretty rough spots here.
First, we're all (or, almost all) using AI and aware of its power. But this site is just so clearly the pure, unfiltered output of an LLM. A human touch on the messaging and positioning would go a long way. The now-common saying: if you can't be bothered to write something once, why should you expect humans to read it? The marketing copy and platform comparisons use so many words to say very little of value.
Second, the main video is pretty cringe. The voice alternates between shouting at me and seductively whispering.
Third, project management systems are a burned-over district. There are a million competing platforms out there. This is hard to solve and bold promises like "Replace Jira + Slack + Miro with one canvas" just sound preposterously over-the-top.
Fourth, the "Built for the people who decide" section looks like quotes but surely those are just AI-generated fake testimonials right? I'm already skeptical of the product but that really kills it for me.
On the plus side, it seems you've zeroed in on your niches which is very small, nimble startups and dev teams. Maybe that will help.
Sorry,l I hope you take this in the spirit it's given which is honest feedback and I truly do wish you well and hope to see this refine and succeed.
That is such a refreshingly fair and honest assessment. Thanks for sharing! To me, that engenders a lot of trust in what you’ve built.
> For example, I worry that biology will have a strong attacker-defender asymmetry, where sufficiently capable models may be able to quickly weaponize pandemic-level viruses with widely available materials, whereas defense against these agents is a multi-year operational task in the best case (as we saw with Operation Warp Speed)5. Questions like this should be empirically answered by rigorous pre-release testing, not assumed in advance.
One of two outcomes are true in this scenario: 1) this is unrealistic fear-mongering or 2) we're all fucked.
I just don't see how our solution to this can be export controls or bans. If the fear of a bioweapon engineered by an open weight AI is a legitimate threat, our only option is to develop effective countermeasures (and perhaps the same AI will assist with protecting). Open weights are not going away and pretending like some sort of "ban" will prevent bad actors from accessing them is a fairy tale.
Some real "You wouldn't download a car" vibes at points in this thread.
Is there a way to assign certain domains to always open in a certain container? e.g., if I type the url of my bank that it immediately becomes a banking container? That would be great.
