I feel like a very similar article could be written by a teacher.
We recently rolled out a dashboard so that you can see your token usage. Looking at my usage vs others on my team, I just cannot imagine what they're doing. I use Claude for literally everything and my usage is 10x smaller. I genuinely do not know how they can use that many more tokens. There's gotta be some kind of curve that shows token vs effectiveness and it is not linear.
Hah, came here to make sure someone had mentioned this! One of my favorites.
Re:Ask HN: Remember Fidonet? on Tuesday March 10, 2026 @09:53AM (#47323274)
I was more active on WWIVnet, but I definitely remember Fidonet! Good times.
Same, I used Sonnet 4.6 with the prompt, "Write a simple program that displays a fleur-de-lis. Python is a good language for this." Took five or six minutes, but it wrong a nice Python TK app that did exactly what it was supposed to.

Agreed, absolutely fantastic movie.
Re:Ask HN: Is Connecting via SSH Risky? on Wednesday February 04, 2026 @11:57PM (#46895836)
How else would you do it?
My wife was complaining this morning that her "promotions" were not getting sorted correctly. She will be happy to know it is an actual issue.
Re:OpenWorkers: Self-Hosted Cloudflare Workers in Rust on Friday January 02, 2026 @07:42PM (#46471425)
Then I log in to Linode or whatever and open a hole up in the firewall. That's easy. But Cloudflare rarely goes down, not really something I worry about.
Re:OpenWorkers: Self-Hosted Cloudflare Workers in Rust on Thursday January 01, 2026 @03:07PM (#46457546)
Security. I host personal sites on Linodes and other external servers. There are no inbound ports open to the world. Everything is accessed via Cloudflare Tunnels and locked down via their Zero Trust services. I find this useful and good, as I don't really want to have to develop my personal services to the point where I'd consider them hardened for public internet access.
Re:The Economy's Safety Net Is Finally Gone on Wednesday September 13, 2023 @09:29PM (#37503827)
I feel like every week there's a new doomsday article about coming recession, and yet one has not appeared. Of course, if you print it weekly, people start to believe it and eventually you'll be right for one reason or another.
This very much sounds like something my wife and I have talked about. But I can't get it to load.
Re:Dwelling – A social network for your house on Wednesday April 12, 2023 @10:45PM (#35550239)
What if my home hasn't been upgraded to have an AI yet? Can it still join?
Re:Ask HN: Do you work less than 40 hours? on Tuesday April 04, 2023 @09:51PM (#35448248)
You do all that on 6-8 hours of work a week?
Re:De-cloud and de-K8s – Bringing our apps back home on Wednesday March 22, 2023 @07:14PM (#35268378)
Something I feel like these conversations seem to miss is that it is not binary; you don't have to host hardware on-prem if you don't want to be in AWS. There are other clouds. There are Sungards of the world were you can pay for racks of managed hardware. There are a lot of options between buying and managing your own hardware and AWS.
Seems like the way to know for sure is to test it. Wouldn't seem like it'd be hard to do that, especially if you have access to Catchpoint or something similar.
Re:GitHub to Layoff 10% on Thursday February 09, 2023 @08:04PM (#34734214)
I 100% think this is the long term play. Once we figure out how to really have "remote only" companies, the "remote" part won't be "remote in the USA" but "remote in some cheap part of the world". We tried this with outsourcing but it failed because we didn't have the "remote" part down... now we do...
Why are we still printing things?

"I was asleep. The expectation that I would see it, much less respond to it, is crazy."
Re:New record levels of private aviation flights on Thursday December 23, 2021 @01:38PM (#29664911)
Ding ding... schools here are filled with kids wearing masks. One can argue it is not useful, but that is not the point at all. The point is, they wear them without complaint, every day. Hell, my kid has her mask on before we walk out the door. I tell her she doesn't need it, but it's just easier for her to put it on and forget about it than remember to put it on when we get where we're going. She's a picky kid with sensory issues, so...
Re:New York Public Library ends all late fees on Wednesday October 06, 2021 @07:35AM (#28771826)
Hey, that's me. I returned a few books a day late due to flooding and racked up an $0.80 charge. I can't pay it online because the minimum allowed online is a dollar. I'd pay the dollar if it allowed me, but it doesn't. I don't care enough to figure out how else to pay the fine, so I just don't go to the library anymore.
Cloudflare doesn't make any attempt to hide the fact it's serving requests; the "server" header says "cloudflare".

The firewall logs show you exactly what rule triggers this behavior: ===== Ruleset ID: 48ba18287c544bd7bdbe842a294f1ae2 Ruleset Name: Bot Fight Mode for Definite Bots Rule ID: 874a3e315c344b1281ad4f00046aab6f =====

Users are generally free to disable rulees, the WAF, etc.

Don't use work equipment for personal activities?
I've been trying for years to get them to add a cut-through that exists near the house. Not sure why they won't add it, but it makes walking directions in the neighborhood make no sense.
Indeed. I've worked remotely for more than a decade now. I'm not opposed to going back to the office, but the value would have to be extremely obvious and high.
Re:Cloudflare Service Degraded in Illinois on Thursday February 18, 2021 @10:39PM (#26189375)
Seems like it's operational for me, but there are some issues ongoing: https://www.cloudflarestatus.com/
How many email accounts does Gmail have? How many have you seen locked for no reason? It has to be a staggeringly low percentage. I understand the fear, of course.
Re:Nextdoor is replacing the small-town paper on Friday February 05, 2021 @12:02AM (#26033320)
I have had problems with people letting their dogs poop in my yard. What I started doing was scooping up the poop and putting it on the sidewalk. Interestingly, this seems to work.

I confronted one woman whose dog was pooping in my yard when I got home a few years ago. She came back and keyed my S2000. Of course the police did nothing.

Re:Intercept, debug and mock HTTP with HTTP Toolkit on Thursday February 04, 2021 @11:45PM (#26033227)
I've used tool a few times, I really like it. It's simple enough I can hand it to "semi-technical" folks pretty easily.
I have no desire for touch screen on my laptop.
